I think the rain forest is doomed ! I am not saying that with a happy face but it will happen.
Then we are all doomed.

Bio-fuels are an ökological disaster and making food for poor countries unpayable. Luckely they stopped the precept here, to mix fuel with 10%
bio-fuels, cause over 1 million cars wouldn`t run well on it.
(We still have a 5% Mix)
Brazil owns the "lungs of the world" there
They are very important, exspecialy for the global weather I think , but I´m sorry to disagree, we will really in $#it if the oceans are distroyed, which producing the most oxigen and collecting carbondioxide too

Still I´m optimistic, our cars will have a future; but they will look a little different from today:D....

rofl roflBritain under New Labour? A Green future? The Amish way of life is going to start looking pretty good soon. Better get a horse and shotgun.

I wasn't just thinking about the weather, if the rainforests go we've had it, in all kinds of way.

Ever look at the exhaust contents of veg oil? It's a great idea for the consumer (I'm planning to convert a Dodge Cummins soon), but exhaust is not as "clean" as regular diesel. So which is it? Run out of Petro, or foul up the air?

Most folks have forgotten that the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, once said that " petroleum is far too valuable to use as fuel."

That was over 30 years ago. He was talking about petrochemicals, drugs, etc. - stuff cooked out of crude.

Things didn't work out so well for him.

Here is something to think about. Oil is traded on the commodities market and its the speculators looking for a quick profit that is driving up the price of oil. The middle east is pumping plenty of oil and the oil companies are forced to buy oil at market prices which is now over $100 per barrel.
To make things a little more complicated these investors are the hedge funds that have billions of dollars to invest and are looking for as high as a return as quickly as possible.
Although commodities have always been a risky place to make money these billions of dollars that the hedge funds are investing are owned by the big pension funds that lost their ass in the dot com bubble. These pensions funds do not have the money to cover the upcoming retirement obligations of the post WW2 baby boom generation and are desperate to make up the lost monies as quickly as possible.
The dot com (scam) bubble happened because Bill Clinton put his cronies in all the top regulatory posts in the US government and then told them not to enforce any business laws, hence the investment bankers made many billions most of which came from the pensions funds.
Take oil off the commodities market and regulate it and oil will be 50 dollars a barrel again.

...plastics too.

Don't want to be too gloomy. Spain seems to be reaping the rewards of wind power in a big way:

...and a positive one on the Brazilian rain forest:

There are no riots here due to fuel prices, the fuel is subsidized and quite cheap..

I used to have Eygptian neighbours. They said it was difficult to get a doctor there - is that right?

Our fuel is subsidizing rather than subsidized. It subsidized he who shall not be named's TV license, Bulimic Prescott's food and numerous MP's mortgages, second & third home payments, flat screen TVs, new kitchens, art work, etc..

:hmmI wonder if we could petition to have England ruled directly by the Scottish (or Welsh) parliaments?

as a general comment...no that doesnt sound right..but then again maybe they lived in a real bad part of the country where good doctors arent available or had a very specific illness that needed a specialist that wasnt available here....

OMG
That is humbling. So much for growing bio-fuels.

A family friend said his son recently filled his Ford Transit van with cooking oil from Lidl's supermarket (less than half the price of diesel 50+pence a litre!) -- apparently his Diesel Transit is designed to handle it. He left the bottles for the store to "recycle". If things get much worse we'll have to burn the politicians for fuel:).
