Hi All

My name is Jim. I am originially from North Dakota U.S.. I spent 4 years in our Navy, 10 years in and around San Diego Ca., and currently reside in Wisconsin. I am fairly new at freedivinig and spearfishing. I joined this forum when I seen many Wisconsin spearfishers and divers here ie...(check out their forum). I'm excited about a freediving class that is getting organized here.(read about it on Wisconsins Forum). Should be ordering my first wet suit(open cell) this week. Thanks to everyone for the great info in all of your posts and articles on deeper blue.

I received a PM today about my Username. I was SHOCKED to find out it means something other than what I had intended it to mean. I was told my username is a derogatory term used in other parts of the world. I am sorry for this and I can assure everyone that I have never heard of this before nor did I intend it to be understood this way.

When I was in the Navy there is a ceremony that we go through when we cross the equator. Prior to crossing the equator you are affectionatlly considered a Poly"wog". Normally the Polly part of Polly"wog" is not spoken when refering to such a person in the Navy. After completing a series of strange and somewhat grueling initiation events King Neptune grants you the status of "Shellback". I completed this ceremony and am recogninzed as such by all U.S. Sailors. When sailing aboard any Navy vessels I am required to participate in this ceremony and initiate any other Polly"wog" into the shellback status. This is all done in good fun and heads off any mutiny attempts:).

Though I am Shellback by Navy maritime standards I chose "wog" as my Username because I am new to this sport and have not been initiated into it's finer points and need help and advice from the Shellbacks on this site. No offense was intended. I will be posting another post or two to inform others of what happend and will change this Username. Thanks for informing me.

Hope it hasn't caused you too much stress Jim. That particular term has an amazing amount of meanings - in Australia it was bad once, but then was almost a term of endearment in the 90's thanks to a couple of popular comedians. It will probably morph a bit more as time goes on.

Similarly in Australia there are words we say commonly that I wouldn't dare utter here in England because of their offence. Words like "Sport", and "Cricket", and "Rugby" :D

Cheers,
Ben

Well the thought occurred to me to but having read your posts it's obvious that you are a decent guy and meant no offence in any shape or form. I wouldn't loose sleep over it :)

I'm so accustomed to not having a clue what usernames mean that it never crossed my mind to be offended, but then I guess it just proves that words do have different meanings in different countries.

I had the distinct displeasure of crossing the equator on the USS Albany, a heavy cruiser, as an NROTC Midshipman back in 1957. For all of my 20 year career in the Marine Corps I held on to my Shellback card so as to avoid repeating the experience if I ever found myself on a Navy ship again.

BTW, no one has any problem figuring out what my user name means.

watcha mean bill your username has me fluxed, nobody in their right mind would put up a username that sounds scottish,,,,,

Lol and Wog, who Its a shame that people take offense so easily, just point the particular parties my way and Ill have them heaving within 5 minutes. As all my endearing friends (which i rent by the day) would say .. (Sean you lack tact)

HI Jim,
thanks for that post. I never knew that about the Navy and i was fortunate to cross the equator once by boat but never got a special name :)

I was also unsure about Wog. When I first went to the UK as child in 1977 Golliwogs, as they were called then, were an emblem or a mascot for Robertson's jam, and also used in children's stories. I dont know you are familiar with them but they are a black soft toy with big eyes and curly hair. when i returned to the UK as an adult some years later I mentioned the word Golliwog and almost the whole pub went silent. Someone whispered to me, "they are called Gollys now". Did I feel like a heel.

I was totally unaware that it was an offensive word being that it was used by Enid Blyton in some of her books and Bertha.. cant remember now. Being brought up mostly in Africa it wasnt a word I was familiar with.

Anyway, welcome to DB. :) good to have you here, Writing Only Good-stuff :D

TY sands so are we going on a date or what :D.... just waiting on confirmation for my dubai dates :)

wog, going on Jon's definitions post...there would be nothing wrong with taking a few more soundings from people on here. Whether you feel that you need to change your username to appease the people who may be overstepping the democracy of this international(originally US?) forum is a matter of choice. What is derogatory in the UK is clearly not in most of the rest of the world and does not seem to be in the very much larger nation of the US. Look at the location of the people who complained and don't just back down if you earned that term of endearment. However I and others I assume respect how you have very tactfully explained.

A date? Plenty of dates here in the Middle East. :D In fact, they are always squished all over the pavement rofl

:naughty you just hurt my one and only feeling,,,,,,,,,,

but dont worry ill survive :inlove

No one has complained and to be honest I doubt anyone would complain. It was merely an observation that the name may cause offence. The staff of the forum are happy that Jim may keep his user name but if he wants to change it then that's his wish he hasn't been asked to. What I would say is that Jim's concerns over this matter have shown him to be a top dude and worthy of a bit of rep from everybody :)

Covert Dude if you go drinking with Sara on her home turf you may possibly find your self in the same situation as Wog did here. Being how the the area she drinks in is steeped in mystery I would suggest you augment your diving hand signals with some of these new signals then you may possibly avoid an embarrassing situation.
