Video cam 'Follower' float

That's amazing Jonny, really great idea
What do you use to tow your float? and How do you stop the line tangling around your legs? I bought a Banks board from the US last year. Currently using 15mm float rope to tow it but still find its a little obstructive on the legs

I use 6mm pvc tube from b&q. But some guys use aquarium tube which is thinner wall. Not all tube floats!
Pvc tube is the best ive used for not tangling and i have a float from a commercial type net on the line to keep it up and off my legs. Works very well.

Im a bit disappointed by the prices of tooling, might just remain a pet project...

Mark 2 is in production... :)

What do you mean by tooling to have a blank /mould made for foam and glassing or some sort off abs? Or cad machine set up?

ok thanks for that, the pvc tube and float seems like a great idea, i'll try and knock something together. Went for a 5mm Omer Black moon, and got a 3mm vest....should be tooled up for the cold water

Ian, i thought if i could knock out a few at a cheapo price then it might be worth trying.
its amazing what a nights sleep can do - a new idea and mark 2.5 will be CADed today... this version will be pressure proof and therefore possibly ok for divers too... :)

Excellent work Jonny, I didn't realise that it was meant to dive with you, just surface footage. A very minor point, but how do you prevent the video line and float line from tangling around each other?

Good question! i originally had hoped that the video/'follower' line would be almost invisible under water - but it clearly isnt! so i have adjusted the connection to clip straight onto the normal floatline. just the usual one line this way :)

Here's the latest; it can be pressure/vacuum formed [single sheet] and uses 2 commercial fishing net floats for buoyancy [rated to hundreds of feet!]:

The floats will be held in place by tie wraps. The whole thing is just 400g buoyant...

Are you sure you don't work for NASA ?Its amazing wait till you see my prototype you will crack up!Keep it coming you've got us all waiting like expectant dads !

Well the pred-o-cam was suppose to be a bass looking winged torpedo but its not going as i had visioned.im still playing with expanding foam and balist.. Was thinking of soft wood but its wieght and bouyancy play off. 130220131057.jpgand mirror fishy finish once shaped rounded off made streamline ect.looking at pic flash gordon may well appear!.

Ah something like a penguin cam? that was an amazing program on TV a few nights ago - camera inside lifelike robot pengiuns and penguin eggs. awesome :)
I'm hoping to get in the water with version 2 tomorrow... i ditched the later flat vac-formed versions as i found a foam moulding process that can be done reasonably cost effectively... :)

Here is the latest version which is a tad smaller for less weight and buoyancy. I also gelcoated it. We have flat calm and sunshine today so i will be testing it later, attached directly on the floatline this time... :)

Good going can't wait for update. I have 2' 4''x4'' softwood I was going to carve into a fish shape but you just hit a saw point its going to be heavy and solid to be carrying down the beach with all the other gear so may follow you lead with foam .my expanding foam isn't expanding or setting its just gone in the wheely bin had it in a long plastic tube /bag for a mould may find a block to cut up in to shape.its a balance of buoyancy /stability/weight balaste .

You can buy the two components of expanding foam. Mix, pour in 'ideal' temps and it rises like loaf of bread and can be shaped with a simple rasp and then sanded (wear mask!)

It is handy stuff if you have made a shape that just needs filling with something with a little strength. I made my outrigger for my kayak out of it and then glassed it.

Thanks Yeti any web shops you can suggest I get expanding foam glass/resin from ?

ian unless you have a mould or other void that needs filling then i dont think its worth using expanding foam - cost mainly, but the ease of blocking up some kingspan makes it too easy...

ta out now trying to find something does fiberglassing it melt the foam n what mat do you use any product names would be very helpfull.did you get out ?

Kingspan foam used for house insulation. Norman Piette sell it ;)

i was out but vis was milky; better today i hope.
