Good to meet all you guys on Tuesday. The dive was interesting and a bit of a challenge at my experience level ( limited vis a bit of a tide and a fair swell) Thought we made a good safe call Broughy for our knowledge of the area. It seemed I ran out of air real quick hanging onto the kelp being turned upside down. Well guys what is the drill for getting out onto rocks that are awash like that, I felt like I wanted to get my fins off in the water so that I could move quickly on the rock , only problem was I didnt have anywhere to secure them. Hey Wolf diver whats the military take on that one? Could have done with having my speargun out of the way as well. Clive and Paul you are both bonkers how did you manage to stay in one spot out there? Really enjoyed the social afterwards even though I was in the sheeroot yet again with my wifey. Cheers steve.

Experience, and knowing the area helps, knowing what the tide is doing next and swimming hard against it when needed....but mostly, you're right, it's beinging totally bonkers that does it! there were times when we were both body surfing out there, all good fun!rofl

As for pinning yourself to rocks in a swell, well, you just develop you own style - mine consits of clamping myself to a rock any which way I can and hoping the next big wave/swell isn't going to pulverises me into the middle of next week!:blackeye

Yep thats the place, can be good fun first and last light for fish in the open, hole hunting during the day.

Get your self down there.

I love hole hunting, any time of day or night ;-)

Anyway, hi all,

I'm down for the weekend and have done some of the scuba thing over at Swanage today. Is any one around tomorrow (Sunday 31st) to help a couple of newbies learn the spearfishing ropes please?

If not, can any one recommend a good site where we might find some decent vis and easy conditions to try a few of the tips i've read on here?

Got all my own gear with the exception of a float and stringer so not looking to borrow/lose any one else's stuff.

Any help much appreciated, we're based over in Bournemouth/Christchurch but are happy to go as far as Chesil etc and can also offer someone a lift as there'll be a spare seat in my pick-up.

Cheers
Brad

took a drive early this morning with pete01. In by 7am. vis was terrible at about 2m max. took the 75 out which proved to be a mistake as the tide was running very hard and it was hard work trying to move into and along the tide. bumped into (literally) a monster bass but couldn't get the gun round to get a shot off.watched the beast slinky away as i struggled with the weed, tide and gun. I had the 60 back on the beach but didn't fancy the swim all the way back to get it. Wish i had because 5 mins later i was looking at another thick bodied beaut cruising under the weed. tried to turn without loosing position but it was futile. pulled the trigger but missed. battled the tide for another 10 mins then noticed some movement below me. fired........fish on! the line tugged for a few seconds then a bass with a belly hole in swam up from the gloom past my face and out across the reef............fish off. aaaaaaarrrrrggggghhhh! continued on into the rip through the weed and suddenly a monster head appeared to my left. 'Holy Moly' i thought.....thats got a head the size of a sheep! it cruised out from behind the weed and i turned the 75 as best i could and fired.................surely i couldn't miss, it was 3 feet away. as i pulled the line gently to see if i had a strike the cheeky bugger swam up from where i thought i shot to look me straight in the eye as if to say "you c***!" it was so close i could have licked it!, but i couldn't get the line back and the spear in the trigger mech in time for a second shot. AARRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHH! saw a few schoolies after that, and a few big mullt but nowt else. Frustrating but hey - its no fun if you win every time.

pete saw a few mullet but struggled in the tide because i had his omer milleniums (as one of mine is snapped) and he only had swim fins.....thanks brother, fat lot of good it did me though.

next time gadget, next time!

Thanks for the warning Podge. Sorry I didn't make contact, but was in the water on the other side of Portland again.

What was the viz like? Did you see anything worth shooting at? Do you think there would be less jet ski activity during a weekday evening (if we were heading that way for a club dive, for instance?)

All the best,

Gaz.

Vis was hit and miss from Bowleaze right along to the other side of White Nothe, cleared up a bit up by the cow and calf and was a lot better towards the door.
As for Bowleaze if it was me it’d be a first thing in the morning or a dark o’clock dive.
Better safe than sorry as those idiots on jet skis can’t be trusted one little bit!!!!:martial:blackeye:crutch

Hey guys

Bowleaze cove was full of jet skis but they are cordened off only accessing the beach from the left of the jetty as you look out to sea.

Viz was quite poor from 1m to 2m with loads of plankton swirling about saw one bass around 7lb mark but could turn spear around in time and he took one look at me and thought fook off!

My dive buddy had the better end of the stick and took a nice 3lb bass well done the Shap Wiesel.

if your gonna do bowleaze go evening time when the kids are all out the water and take swb for sure. Up around the rocks on the left can be good took a bass from there last week at low tide.

Regards
Kev
