AIDA Team World Championship 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Same in most team sports though isn't it? Got to trust people to have a bit of integrity.

I dont think any serious sport are relaying on trust over the objective rules, but I guess we can be the first one. Maybe we can quit doping testing also and go with trust on that one...

It's an objective rule, just difficult to enforce. I don't know a lot about team sport rules, but rugby has injury substitutions, which are different from voluntary ones (injured player can be treated and return to the field, which is an advantage). They'd have similar problems diagnosing every kind of injury. This is a professional sport and I expect others would be the same.

In most team sports injured players/ team members can be substituted. I don't see why this should be possible at the TWC as well.
Even if it is not for an injury, but for tactical reasons, thats also pretty common in most sports. In the end it is still a team result. Some might argue that this would give an advantage to countries with a larger base of athletes and be a disadvantage for smaller nations. That's true, but also normal.
Somehow you could also argue, that this is the sense of a team event in a sport, that can also be performed by individuals: to give a chance to those, who do not belong to the top individual performers in the world, but to the best in their country.

I think you misunderstood the point I want to have, now the rule is that you have 3 people doing all disciplines, thats the whole point of this, that you need to have 3 people capable to do overall good performances. The point is not to have 17 people that together can produce good 9 performances. So logic in this cace if you are allowed to have reserves will be that reserves dive also and if someone from the first team got injured or something then results from the reserve (all 3) are calculated instead. And simple like this you have avoided all miscalculations.

As far as I have understood the rules ( Im "the +1 reserve" on the danish team) it is as Goran want it to be. I can substitute one of the others ( Jesper, Jakob, Rune) if they are injured/regret participating before the first discipline (CWT). After they have dived the first dive, they cannot be substituted anymore... thats my understanding, but somewhere in the rules this must be specified.

I agree with Goran, that of course you cannot risk discipline-specialists dominating an allround team competition by making it possible to speculate in substitutes...

What about Guy? And even with Kathryn you would have been top.

I think those are the only two who can make it - big trip from this end of the world.

We I think might be a late entry. Kerian coming out of retirement

This was my understanding too. So if in training, someone messes up their ear or someone gets sick after arriving, but before the comp starts, you can substitute in someone else.

I think for Team Canada in previous years the training days would actually determine who was on the team and who was alternate - so you could go in as highest ranked but if you weren't doing well you might get replaced by the alternate before the comp actually starts. I don't think that's how it works for us now though.

Yeah, that sounds like a recipe for creating a group of rivaling individuals rather than building a team

Good luck,
Morten

I guess so. I wasn't diving back then so I'm not really sure how it worked. I guess if you wanted the best team for the WCs though and someone was just performing poorly (sick, stressed, or just hadn't trained enough) and there was someone clearly better, you had a chance to improve the team. However, you then have people who put the work in previously to earn their spot on the team at risk of losing it from having a few off days.

It didn't work at all and created all sorts of silly, damaging and unpleasant situations. It's the reason AIDA Canada has the new selection process.

Agreed, sounds like the current system makes more sense and should result in less problems.

Unfortunately, switching to that system of Team Selection hasn't been enough to solve the problems in Canadian freediving.

Fair point.

What would you (anyone) feel is the best way to do team selection, out of curiosity? I'm out of the loop in terms of specific stuff going on at the moment, but I think it is a topic that keeps coming up over and over again, it seems.

It also sounds like most countries has had drama around team selection to some degree at some point in the last 10 years. I've witnessed a few incredible incidents!

Personally, I'd be a fan of doing away with the alternate diver altogether or allow them to compete as a solo diver in the competition. One or the other.

Having an alternate who's only chance of competing is the misfortune or perceived underperformance of another fellow teammate is a recipe for disaster. It's also an expensive weird sort of vacation for the alternate.

Does every country choose an alternate these days?

In Denmark there is a qualification window period of time, that is: The previous year + the current year until 3 months before the official starting date of the competition. The only problem could be that some of the qualifying results can be a bit old. (max 1 year and 8-9 months thou).

So in this qualification for the Team Championships the qualification period is all 2011 and 2012 until 9th of june (3 months before the official start) . In that period of time the best competition results in the three disciplines counts.

The team is selected from these results in this way:
https://www.sportsdykning.dk/page.php?id=227&page=819

- and only those who actively write an email to AIDA DK saying "I want to try to qualify me for the world champs" are on the list.

So its pretty transparent and you have more than a year to get the results you need to make it for the qualification. The team consists of the 3 best freedivers in that period of time. The reserve is the 4th best (of those who are interested in beeing on the team).

Best,
Morten

Pretty similar to NZ (we pick a cut-off date, usually after our nationals) and people have to request to be considered. Of course our problem is finding three people willing to spend the thousands of euros and take a month off work to compete coming out of winter...
