... Well, since there will be certainly some DQ's and penalties, I would not be surprised seeing 50m performances ending up in the finals
Although I was just joking, I was finally not so much off the plate. The worst DNF performance in the finals is 72m. I bet that many freedivers are already regretting they did not go.

I don't blame athletes at all.
But if you compare to the year 2009 only Bjarte and Goran have right to be in men's A final. So, we a back to somewhere in 2006.

Do you really think that people would have done the dives they did if there were only eight in the final? There isn't much point in going to 150+ and increasing your chance of a red card. Two athletes at least did so and paid the price.

Don't forget the 50m pool difference. It is more significant than I thought.

Presumably the main disincentive for attending is time and cost, rather than worrying about not being able to make the final? Even if placing was an issue for some, the prospect of getting into the final group of 23 virtually by default wouldn't be that appealing.

Dave, you are speaking about competitors usually participating at WCs, or having to qualify with solid performances. I speak about the thousands of others who use to participate at "normal" competitions, and who would not even dare to think about participating at a WC. But if they knew what performance would be sufficient for the finals, they could very easily do it too, and hence are certainly regretting they did not come, because I can tell you that it is another experience to compete side by side with gians like Trubridge, Colak, Sessa, Molchanova, Nevatt, ... than just starting in local competitions. Many of those who did not think about registering would be very glad for such experience, and the cost might have been secondary for them.

I mentioned it here some times ago. And virtual freedivers were very sceptical ...
The long pool is not a problem. Only for those who want to have a problem. I see several freedivers who did their DNF PB in the qualifications. And I bet the finals will show us amazing performances.

Well at least my old DNF pb is done in a 50m pool
But yeah I agree, pushing off walls with slick suits is more efficient then swimming.
I also agree there is no point in being in the top 5 finalist. Better safe one's energy for the big one. I does make me wonder about Bjarte's plan... apparently 168m is for him euh easy?

Trux - is making the finals really much of an achievement though, when the final group represents most of the competitors? Would people value that, knowing that their performance would still be far short of the top competitors? Bit hollow, surely. And if they wanted to compete alongside the big names, having a small field and easy qualification doesn't really change anything. I suppose it means they get two swims rather than one... but if anything it'd be more of an 'experience' to compete in a big, strong field that kicks your ass.

Dave, yes it is a big achievement for the average guy or girl. I think for most of them it is a big deal to be able to tell friends in school, work, or in a pub that they qulified to finals at a World Championship. Nobody of the friends knows what the performances represent, but being in finals of a WC is simply "wow" for them. It is something completely different than bragging they finished 9th at a competition in some local hole

It looks like the live streaming was finally made available too (though as for now I just see some guys speaking in Italian, and nothing happening, although the DYN heats should be already running):

Evolutionchannel

EDIT: I must say that the Italians really like to speak. Just a pity they did not find some moderator who is able to speak English. I'd tell it would be a better idea than an Italian speaker for a world class event I hope it will change later when the competition really starts

I hope so ,too Trux. If they don't we will make sure to give live reports poolside from one of the judges or Aida rep.

Reactions: Don Paul and trux
Yes, please, please rip the micro from them as fast as you can!

Two unusual protests today. Lidija Lijic failed to check in 60 min prior to her OT (was in the area) then DNS and won her protest - gets to dive tomorrow. Romain Doris did 173m but was DQed for not wearing a fin. Protest unsuccessful.

A pity for Romain. He should have taken at least socks, plastic toenails, or stick a mini monofin-pendant into his trunks. He would have to win the protest, since there is no limitation on the size and type of equipment.

What whas the reason for Lidia's DNS - was that organizer's fault, or what?

Actually no. The jury said that he needed a monofin or bifins.

As for Lidjia, I understand that she thought that you only had to check in 45min before. I believe the argument was that some other people also didn't check in on time but were not penalised. If someone closer to Lidjia could confirm or correct I would appreciate it.

Yes, but 2mm long bifins would be sufficient (hence socks with a tiny blade sticked on it, or mini-fins just for the toenails). There is no dimension limitation in the rules. That's a very ridicule DQ. He was in a disatvantage and gets disqualified. If he started with fins in DNF, I'd understand, but this is simply not right. Either we specify exactly what fins are allowed, and make the rules same in all competitions, or we should stop doing exceptions and enforcing such DQ's just during WC.
