It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
A study by the American Heart Association that I wish I could find and post here shows that whatever gains in life length one gets from "eating right" is offset by the stress incurred by obssessing about it. Attitude rules, folks, but only if it's a good one.

Oldsarge what a bunch of crap, sorry but i had to say that. In the health club that we belong to we have a 94 year old man who is still lifting weights and is strong as a horse. He was one of follwers of Pritkin back when he wrote his book in the 70's. This guy swims the lake most days after the gym for a mile or so.
He is just an example of what diet and exercise can do for ones health and lenght and quality of life. And you should see my mom, after my dad died of a sudden heart attack at 58 she went into full health mode, at 76 she has no need for any meds, works out with weights and swims and walks a mile or so every day.
You are what you eat.

Gore can critique, but can't solve the problem, no politician can.

Different problems, same solution (not necessarily the only one, just the best option AFAICT).

1) Oil addicted economy/society, oily wars, fuel costs
2) Vehicle pollution, vehicle traffic jams
3) Health "diseases" obesity, diabetes, artheriosclerosis

so bleeping obvious.

aerobic pedal + electric supplement + aerodynamic + attachability
can be used on road, RR track, trail, as canoe on water

individual vehicles can attach into trains for high efficiency transit.

Hawaiian: Lau Lima = hands paddle together = efficient cooperation

Traix Lau Lima = pedal together as unitary mass, but separable into single or dual vehicles when desired.

Conceptually, at simplest, take 4 identical cheap mountain bikes, attach 4 cheap portable electric drills with extra charged batteries to frames with driver disk and clutch set so pedal pressure speeds drill. Each bike securely attaches/detaches to each other during motion. Add lightweight aero shell & foam cushion, floats. Except very steep hills, this is fine for day to day commutes. Healthier, cleaner, more friendly, twice the speed of bicycling, solar chargable, can use like a canoe or pontoon, can add styling and special components (like extra battery for disabled).

Anyway, that's my thought, after researching it. Traix ("trace" not traiks or trakes).

There's a software engineer in Israel that wants to make electric cars, investing $2,00,000,000 into making fast electric wheelchairs. I think Traix is much much better than that. Traix is a social & ecological improvement, not just a band-aid (plaster). :)

The technology already exists for electric cars. GM's EV1 was a prime example of a workable electric car. Interestingly enough, GM discontinued the EV1, and when the leases had expired, nearly all of the cars were reclaimed and crushed. That has not happened before in the history of the automotive industry, even when vehicles had serious design problems. Around the same time, GM began to market large SUV's and acquired rights to manufacture the Hummer. Now, gas prices are at an all-time high, and we are stuck paying huge prices to fill up our elephantine vehicles. The interesting thing is, people were preparing for the influx of electric vehicles. The charging infrastructure was beginning to take shape in many of the major cities. However, those are largely unused.

There is still hope for the electric car. There's a very sexy one coming out called the Tesla Roadster. It's a sweet little number that can go 130 miles per hour and has a range of 250 miles, and it is 100% electric. Tesla has plans in the works for a mid-size car, code named the White Star. The cost of charging this vehicle is about the equivalent of 70 cent/gallon for gasoline.

Personally, I am considering purchasing an electric scooter. It has a range of 14 miles and a top speed of 17 mph, which is more than adequate for my little town. That would be an excellent alternative to my Dodge Ram, and it is possible to attach a solar panel.
 
I'll live with my 'wagon until the hydrogen fuel cells are perfected. for those who have been listening to all the "impossibilities" of the hydrogen economy, there have been a number of important breakthroughs lately that you might want to explore. Of course, a hydrogen economy will turn the LA Basin into Southern Calibama with all that water vapor . . . rofl
 
I do my part as long as weather permits, riding my motorcycle (about 90 miles per gallon) as much as I can. I also recycle, compost, etc. However, I will not surrender my V-8 Durango because I need it to tow my boat, and that's a real need!
 
No worries :) Electric cars would do the job for about 90% of the population's commuting needs, but I don't think that towing would be within the scope of the present technology. I would not surrender my Dodge Ram V8 either, because it is useful for heavy-duty and long-distance stuff, but a little electric scooter would suit my needs in town.
 
I've no interest in promoting electric vehicles, hydrogen vehicles, biofueled vehicles nor light rail vehicles since I see them as additional problems rather than solutions.

Til folks stop viewing their bodies as baggage, rather than energy sources, and addicting their kids (even in the womb) to sedentary transit, non-nutritive foods and poor stewardship of Earth's diverse but limited habitat, I am sure global warming etc. will worsen. That's no issue for most folks focused on going through the short term.
Who is focused on the long term? All I hear is politics & blame games.

Anyway just another day. Ce'st la vie.

I think there is a place for both self-powered and electric transport. Fitness is a good thing, and if people used self-powered transport there would be a big improvement in health, but it is not realistic for long journeys, and some people will not use it for health reasons or because they don't want to. Electric vehicles, preferably solar powered, would provide an alternative for those who want or need it.
 
BTW, has anyone researched the disposal of an electric vehicle at the end of it's duty cycle, or following a wreck?

Sorry for the double post, but I thought that the above message should stand alone. All things in moderation. Too much of anything is bad, even circular global warming discussions. Oh crap! Did I just type that out loud? ;)

The main concern is obviously the batteries, since much of the rest of the vehicle can be recycled or disposed of in a way similar to that of conventional vehicles. Since hybrids also contain batteries, we have to be concerned about those as well.
Toyota, Honda, and Ford all have recycling programs for their batteries. Each part of the battery is recycled, including the metals, wiring, plastic, and plates. The battery itself is engineered to last for the life of the car, which my research indicates is at around 150,000 miles. Toyota offers car owners a $200 reward for bringing in spent batteries. Electric vehicle batteries might not have such a long life, but battery recycling is available.
 
How (environmentally) does that compare with (for instance) a Dodge 2500, with a Cummins Turbo diesel which is rated for a 500,000 mile duty cycle (and can be recycled as well)?

Also, how does the new "clean diesel" stack up, when compared to gasoline?

BTW They will have to do better than 150,000 mile duty cycles do generate much interest, most small engines are rated for at least 250,000 - at least my Subaru is...)
