Apnea/Freediving Course

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I'm interested in anything after Oct 10. I will have to do some traveling during late Oct/early Nov but won't know when until it gets closer.

That said, Yeeeeehawwwww!!
I can't wait!

i would like wazee or red granite. why not the same time as the freediveapalooza? that would work out well. would this be one weekend at $150? what does padi certification do?

We're all too busy diving at palooza to run a class. No one wants to get out of the water to hear a lecture or take a test.

Class is one weekend- Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.

C-card does nothing more than show you were there and understood the material- it's not like scuba where you need a card to get tanks refilled or purchase gear. The main point of the course is to teach you the skills you need to dive safely and, hopefully, expand your skill set a bit so that you can increase your depth and bottom time.

Jon

Jon,

The plan looks good. Let me know the itinerary as it firms up. Please include times, dates, location(s) and sign-up/pay dead lines. Doug

Jon,

Pick a date & location...I'm pretty sure I'd be able to work around just about anything. Lake Michigan would be great. I'm sick of all the bad vis I've been in lately, but I'd go anywhere you were teaching. Would be cool to freedive over a wreck?

Red Granite is only 20 min from my house...I'd have to talk to my boss :chatup, but I might be able to put everyone (6-8) up at my house. I also have access to our church (Oshkosh on Hwy 21) where we could do the classroom stuff...lots of classrooms & large gym area.

Let me know if any of these items would help out. If you have power point or video, we could get those set up as well. We would just need to coordinate ahead of time.

COUNT ME IN!

Gene

Got to 30' today at Devil's Lake, the a quick bit of...panic I guess.... Things tightened up. I recovered and stayed there for a few seconds and the safely back to the surface. I definately need some equipment, like booties. I toughed it out, but the last half hour my skin got soft and the rubber wore at it a little.

For me, as for location, I prefer inland and south. Mainly because of money. The class is a great price of course, but then a room and charter fees and I'm out of my budget. That said, Jon do what you have to do to get the most people. If I can't do it this time, then so be it, we just go where the current takes us ya know!

We could do it in two days if we all camp out up in Lake Wazee- two long days. That would give people Friday night to get up there and we would start first thing Saturday morning. That would eliminate the charter fees and hotel costs- assuming you like to camp. ;)

We could do the same thing at Red Granite, but the vis isn't quite as nice. Red Granite is closer and it's very easy to hit the depths we need. It's also quite a bit smaller and more crowded.

The advantage to Milwaukee is that Maytag can take the train there and that it's somewhat centrally located for everyone. We could use inland lakes instead of a charter boat if cost is a problem.

I'm open to anything.

Jon

Milwaukee, BRFalls,Red Granite.....Makes NO difference to me whatsoever...Although Wazee would be GUARANTEED good vis. Not familiar w/Red Granite's vis.

Camping is also NOT a problem and I could easily sleep another guy or so in my Lacke & Joys Wildwood canvas tent.

Milwaukee however would be the EASIEST since I live just outside of Waukesha in the Town of Vernon - I'm less than 30 minutes to South Shore Yacht Club.

After turnover MOST of the inland lakes are clear - Lake Michigan ALWAYS depends on wind and weather. Again...Like most are saying...They're up for almost anything.

So really it's up to you Jon...Don't make it hard on 'yerself...

Looks like Gahiel (the guy who originally started this thread) is missing in action? Too bad.

BTW....Looks like we got 6 together pretty quickly!!!!! Frankly I'm suprised there isn't more....

P.S. - Even Douglas popped outta the woodwork & he's been purely a LURKER! Hi Doug!!!! Have you tried your new Picasso blacks again? I love my Cressi 2000 HF's! Hope to see you in class!

MY HOUSE IS ALSO OPEN.....UNTIL OCTOBER 25th (THEN MY WIFE IS BACK FROM SOUTH AFRICA).....A SHOWER, TWO COUCHES, A VERY COMFY QUEEN SIZE FUTON, AND PLENTY OF FLOOR SPACE! FOR ANYONE IN CLASS THAT MAY NEED A PLACE TO STAY FOR THE WEEKEND! ALSO GOT A 42" PLASMA & TIVO WITH A BUNCH OF THE "OCEAN HUNTER" SERIES RECORDED FOR THE EVENINGS ENTERTAINMENT!

So...If it ends up in Milwaukee anyone & everyone can stay...Bring sleeping bags and pillows! Let me know!

Looking back over the posts, it looks like the Oct 13th/14th is the date that might get the most people. The big debate is where.

I tried to find Red Granite, don't know where the lake is exactly, but if it's near the town of Red Granite just west of Oshkosh, then it's a 5+ hour drive for me. Wazee is about 5.5 hours or so. So the better vis would win there. I have no problem camping. I can get up there Friday, I can take a half day.

Wazee would certainly have better vis than Red Granite. There are also a number of hotels close by and a campground right at the lake. It's easy to reach depth from almost anyplace on the lake. We would set up base wherever there are the fewest number of scuba divers to run into.

Milwaukee would have a pool, not necessary but certainly helpful, for the first day.

We can try and plan things for the weekend of the 13+14 if that looks like it will work for most people. Brian, or anyone else who has taken the course before, is also welcome to come up and join in the fun if you wish.

Anyone coming up from south of the border who could give Maytag a ride?

Jon

Chicago is a bit out of the way for me, unless we do Milwaukee. If we could arrange a pickup point... So I guess I'm saying maybe :)

I'm not sure of the Train price- I know AM TRACK (sp?) stops in Portage - Everyday- From Portage, I could drive to where ever we end up.

Hey Guys,

I'm not sure I can do 10/13-14 due to previously scheduled commitments, so Wazee/RG sounds good since there's guaranteed vis and seems good for everyone.

If I'm one of the 6 counted I can pay now (Jon I'll PM you) as I have faith that there will be overflow demand for a spring course in maybe Milwaukee (or Madison?). This is a great course for a great price.

Do any of your wives want to learn in the Spring with me?

Cheers,

Maytag, rearrange your schedule! :) Lets get a count for Oct. 13th and 14th at Wazee. I can do Friday night too, if everyone else can.

I'm 1 for that weekend.

Hi Jeanette, so how many wifes Jon has?

Man, I tell you this is a good lesson to keep up with what goes on here.
I didn't think it was happening until BGill pointed out the recent development
(thanks!)

If you guys are at 5 and need a sixth, count me in as a paying customer now. I want Jon to get his insurance so maybe there will be and course in Spring. Fall is always bad but this one in particular.

Just in case though, Jon, you mentioned you had wetsuits for rent? What sizes? 5'3" Size 0-2 MS. Are the suits pee-free?

One should be more than enough for anyone- at least one at a time. rofl

Wetsuits are an issue. I have no extra ones to lend/rent out. I might have one extra 3mm in my size (5'10"/170lbs) but it's been glued togther more than once and is rather delicate to put on- as Jeff found out this summer. ;)

Looking out my window at the 59F degree, rainy, weather I can only imagine what it will be like a month from now. I know that a few of you have wetsuits to cover these conditions, but a 3mm full suit, and more likly by that time a 5mm full suit, will be needed by everyone in the course. Water temp is in the low 70's on the surface in Madison right now, but only the mid 60's up in Wazee. Of course, once you get past about 25' all of the lakes are 40F.

If things workout better for the Spring that's fine as well. My wife OK'd a weekend away in October so I can teach it then if it works for everyone.

Jon

Jon- If for some reason we can't get 6 - I will pay for the 6th spot- and if someone shows up cool. I have a friend who is looking to see if he has off from the Military then - if he does- he is going to try to come. I'm surprised you haven't had about a dozen people respond yet. I can't Wait!
