BC Spearing Trip: Round 3 (2008)

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Woohoo, can't wait Sherri!
Seacidal, there is decent diving around Van at that time of year. Spearfishing not so great as there are closures on just about everything, but you could probably still get out and hunt. Laminar and Eric Fattah are great resources for the good spots in the area- PM them- they will help you out.

Well, it's been some time :) Hopefully everyone is well and doing what they need to be doing lately (and having some fun adventures along the way!) I spent some time on the island a couple weeks ago, and managed to get into the water with 7/8 seals, and an octopus!!!! It was amazing & I had all the time in the world with this octopus – that I happened upon in about 6ft of water! way too cool. wayyy too cool. It was a lot of fun. I'm going to make a road trip to Vancouver this weekend with the kids :) Diving will not be on the itinerary, but other potentials include grouse mountain, the Newton wave pool, the Capilano Canyon Park & Salmon Hatchery, Playdium, etc.

Any good diving adventures lately? I'll have to do some back-reading to catch up. If the BC Spearfishing Trip RndIII happens, count me in. Just saw Chris' msg up there. I have the first couple weeks of Sept off too, but I will make it for any dates. Also, every five days, I have five days off, so there's lots of opportunity for getting out and about. And I'll be sure to msg if I'm going to be around for any diving on the coast or elsewhere.

Gabe

Long time no see Gabe! Hope you and yours are well.
BCIII IS happening, Aug 9-17. So do your best to come!

As it stands it's still Telegraph Cove unless there's a consensus on elsewhere. Lee had mentioned all the positives about TC earlier and I agree. Exploring elsewhere would be fine if all the 'immigrants' agree, but I don't want to frighten anyone away from a sure thing ;)

I dunno, the idea of cold-water diving and camp showers doesn't appeal  I like the option of getting warm! My vote's for TC.

With regards to recommending a trip to the West Coast, I think options really depend on the group's need for comfort vs economy. I think all sorts of possibilities open up at either extreme. However, if the comfort level of Telegraph Cove is required, ie. showers, cars, car-camping type gear (large stoves, pots, chairs, etc.), then there is a level of comfort that requires the destination to have nights at locations near road access and domestic camping spots or cabins. This then makes most of north vancouver island's west coast out of the question, north of Tofino.

Everybody could lodge at my house in Tahsis but then we would have to arrange effective boat access and really plan out the days and locations to satisfy spearfishing interests.

Otherwise, I would consider Port Renfrew.

Thoughts?

I think that in the interest of attracting those from afar, we keep it at TC. Those of us who live in the West can explore in more remote locations at other times. I might be coming out in June for a week to do just that! My opinion.

so have the dates changed? I'll hopefully be popping into TC for some early season recon end of May

Hey Colin / Others

Does this interest anyone? A group of bubble blowers from Kamloops are heading to Bamfield and doing four days of diving in the Broken Islands. The dates are May16th - 20th. I'm going forsure, as I've been wanting to spend some time diving the broken islands for some time now. It will be mostly boat diving. I intend to freedive. It should be a great time. Also, after seeing your post here Colin, & depending on the dates you're thinking about, I could perhaps join you for a couple days around TC after the broken islands.

Also, I was at the mouth of the Adams recently :) Not too many fish yet, but it was nice to get back in there.

Gabe

I'll be in Tofino for a wedding 20 - 23 of may, then was thinking of staying or kicking over to TC for a few days of diving, would be great to have you along! bringing the spearo gear, sans scuba

Gabe here, with more info on another trip planned by some local divers. I'm seriously interested in this one. I'm going to contact Dale (owner of the dive shop here in Kamloops) and suggest a longer stay. I think two weeks in each Vietnam & Thailand would be an amazing experience. Especially Vietnam - having only been open to tourists since what, '95 I think?? Travel would be more difficult, but the experience (and the diving) would be phenomenal.

"In March of 2009 I (dale) will be going to Vietnam and Thailand , we will leave on March 14th. and not come back till April 4th.

The plan is to go to Vietnam for the first week, tour and some diving, after that go to Thailand sit on the beach a couple of days then jump on a live aboard dive for 4 days then go back to Phuket and tour, beach, snorkel and dive"

In my minds eye I see the sun rising in Vietnam, and setting in Thailand - both encredible experiences. But again, it's the Vietnam portion that really gets me. Another variation could be to do the planned itinerary, but leave a week or so at the end, for whatever we feel like doing. If anyone is interested speak up soon.

Gabe

here's a quick link to a little video I made after my most recent trip to the island. sorry! didn't have the U/W housing for this trip!

Hey Gabe, nice to see you on here again and thanks for the pics/vids. I look forward to diving/eating with everyone again in August. I have some trips to report when I get time back home. I have been spoiled with diving lately. Recently got back from Kauai/Oahu a couple weeks ago and have turned around on short notice to California right now and to Baja next week for some big game spearing.

Ok everyone, for flight scheduling purposes I need to know the exact dates everyone will be arriving at Telegragh Cove (especially you Willer!). I have an airline credit with Pacific Coastal due to my last minute cancellation last year and the airline needs to know right now (or else they will void my credit) what dates I will be reserving.

I don't want to show up and be alone sleeping in a suit case under a tree at the camp site! :t

Hey everyone, the trip this year sounds like it is going to be amazing. However, unfortunately I am going to have to miss it. I just re-broke my talus and fibula falling out of a tree! (my ankles were already damaged from an old ice-climbing accident) So, anyway, my ankle wont be strong enough by then to be able to dive. I look forward to next year, and I promise to stay out of any trees.

Sorry to hear that, Viking. Things aren't looking too good for me either. Unfortunately, the job situation is very tenuous, and my present monthly salary would barely cover air fare :( Sorry, guys. I tried.

That sucks! Maybe next time.

.... anyone else? Sven, Connor...?

Conner is coming, and I'm under the impression Chris and Claire are making it this year (hopefully). I think Eric, Pete, and Tyler should chime in on this and give us the thumbs up.

:)
