BC Spearing Trip: Round 3 (2008)

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I hope everyone can come. I am really looking forward to it, especially Lee's cooking :p
I think next year we should go to Cali or F-L-A!

Hey all. I'm in for the duration. I'll probably catch the last ferry - night of the 9th, crash on the island, and arrive in TC campground mid AM on the 10th. Then ditch the watch (Colin's influence), set up, and be in adventure mode by noon :)

Hopefully Colin has enjoyed his recent time in the area the past few days. I spent 5 refreshing days in Bamfield over MayLong. Did three days boat diving in the Broken Group and one walkabout day - finding interesting shore dives. Managed to observe a curious wolf eel, watch humpbacks in the area, film a close-up sea blubber jelly, film a tiny wolf eel in the shallows, and spend a day diving finless (among many other interesting moments). Will post a link for media in this next week.

So count me in.

Gabe

Gabe that's great news. I just texted Willer to see how his time up on the west side was... I'll be out in June and might head there for some spearing. Would you say there was anywhere for good spearfishing where you were? I did some scubdiving out there years ago and it seemed fecund, but it was all from a liveaboard. I'd love to get in the water there and get some fish :p
ps- how is your boy doing?

just back from the coast. sadly I didn;t get any time to dive. had to skip the tofino side of the wedding (service was in shawnigan) as I had some unexpected training & introduction opportunities came up on the mainland. with my career as it is, I can't aford to miss them.

Plan is for me to get there late on the 8th and have camp set up following morning as I pick jimbo up afternoon of the 9th. will go for a strol this afternoon, see what I can do about some bear steaks ;)

Hey everyone, the trip this year sounds like it is going to be amazing. However, unfortunately I am going to have to miss it. I just re-broke my talus and fibula falling out of a tree! (my ankles were already damaged from an old ice-climbing accident) So, anyway, my ankle wont be strong enough by then to be able to dive. I look forward to next year, and I promise to stay out of any trees.

Brutal Lars. That is really too bad. What were you doing in the tree?

Bump! 2 months and a week to go! Pics from last year, including me staring at the mess of floatline in the water haha... can't wait!

Hey guys,

I am giving everyone a heads up about a potential change of course for me. Long story short - my father is undergoing chemo and radiotherapy right now for extensive squamous cell carcinoma (cancer) in his neck. He has gotten very sick and debilitated. I have had to take 3 weeks leave off of work (fairly suddenly) and left town to be with him and help out taking care of him. I don't know exactly how this is going to affect my schedule for later in the season, but I am concerned that this may prevent me having the window of time off in August. I was there year 1 and 2, with full intentions of number 3 and will be really bummed if I can't come.

lee

Lee,

If you don't make it, you will be with us in spirit and I am certain your name will get brought up often (in a good way ;)). Having walked in your shoes last year, just look forward to TC 2009!!!

:)

Sorry to hear about that, Lee :( I hope your schedule works out and your dad makes a full, complete, and speedy recovery.

Here's a bump for the trip. Hope Lee's Dad is doing better.
Can't wait to get up there and hit the water! I was at the south end of the island a few weeks ago and it was gorgeous :)

Hey gang, Claire and I will not be making it this year (just realized and I hadn't told everyone). She's off to U of M and I'm saving my pennies to hopefully experience the Dean-ness of Dean's Blue Hole this winter. I am, however, sending one of my wetsuits with Connor :)

We'll have to meet another time Chris and Claire, I look forward to it. Maybe next year we come to Wisconsin? There are certainly enough DB people there that I've yet to meet.

All flights booked for me and Jimdoe. Very much looking forward to it. Fondueset has fitted me out in style with his 6 mil, gloves and socks, so I might not freeze. A week in Michigan and I'm almost comfortable in the thing.

Connor

Erik, we're in Michigan - not Wisconsin. They have more legal spearfishing, we have way cooler waters. It's the state that looks like a mitten surrounded by humongous inland seas.

Rest assured, Connor, that suit will give you special powers - steeped, as it has oft been, in rather chilly water. Probly make you look fat though.

I'll need all the special powers I can get, plus your liver juice, to handle that water temp. Special powers or not, not even that much rubber can make me look fat.

Connor

I made the mistake of having my usual winter pre-dive fare the other day - when it was pretty warm out. Claire and I went for a couple hours dive and I was dripping with sweat all day , even though it was only 73F out. Raw coconut oil and oatmeal, and, of course, Defatted Bull Semen.
