BC Spearing Trip: Round 3 (2008)

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I'd think we'd come into Vancouver on the 9th, head to TC and arrive on the 10th, and leave TC on the 16th.

If I fly into Vancouver on Saturday, the 9th, and ride up with either you guys or JimDoe on Sunday, we start diving on the 11th, dive 5 days and leave on the 16th, fly home from Vancouver on the 17th, don't arrive till early on the 18th. That's as much travel as diving. Anybody planning to go earlier or stay later? or fly into the airport close to Telegraph Cove?

Connor

Checking flights, its a whole bunch cheaper to fly into Seattle, also one less connection to lose luggage. Might even be quicker. Anybody coming from or coming through Seattle? Is clearing Customs any problem by road from Seattle?

Connor

I live in BC but work in Seattle regularly. Likely a quicker way to Vancouver Island from Seattle is to take the ferry from Port Angeles (US) directly to Victoria. Would save you battling north on I-5 only to wait at the border crossing, then lining up again for the ferry.

Haven't taken the PA ferry so you'd need to research the schedule and anticipated wait times.

The only problem for our car with arriving in Victoria is that we will be landing off the ferry at Nanaimo, which is a couple hours up the coast.

Agreed it's a fair bit of travel if you're driving. If I had the $$, I'd fly directly in with all my gear. That said, the trip is beautiful in itself, and the 'getting there' is part of the holiday IMO.
Another thing Connor, is that 5 days of freediving in these temps is lots. Generally I'll dive 2 days then do another activity on the 3rd, just to preserve core body temps. I think you'd find that 4 or 5 days in the water would be sufficient, and much more would cool you enough that you'd lose motivation to be in the water. I've seen it happen many times when I worked on a liveaboard out there. Even drysuit divers burned out after 3 days of 2-tank dives and would end up sleeping and eating the next day away haha.

Not to say that having a few extra days to do other activities would be a bad thing! In any case we'll do everything we can to accomodate anyone's intinerary.

CDavis-- Port Angeles is a good ferry embarkation point, as someone mentions;--

It is not right in Seattle though (a few hours' drive from downtown) so one must plan for that in travelling.

Best, Gera

I'll second that the drive is fun. Don't take the scenic route however. The ferry ride is very relaxing and once you get a bit north the air alone is worth the trip.
Plus it is also possible to get directly into the water when you arrive

The scenic route you mean landing in Seattle, or getting lost? I'm leaning toward flying into Vancouver.

The coastal road on the way to TC - too much traffic and slow going in little towns!

Sounds great Colin,

Can we start to generate a head count. You could specify "in for sure", "out for sure", "possibly in". This will help with starting some plans about campsites and boat. We will likely need to book the campground soon, that is a busy time of year out there for them.

Lee - I am in for sure
Colin and Erik - sounds like in for sure
Lars - I will talk to him to find out
Cdavis ?for sure
Chris?
Brianna and Gabe?
James - out
Eric F, Pete, Tyler?
Jim?
Batray?
anyone else?

Working on it - back shortly. can we repost the dates here for disambiguitization?

I'm in if I can get a suit. JimDoe is so swamped right now that it seems a little iffy.

You can't let a suit prevent you from coming. If needed, I am sure we can figure things out for you with some kind of loaner suit combo. You may end up looking like frankenstein though. I have stuff you could potentially use. What size are you?

I have the time booked off. Bro-in-law might be coming too, with my sister.
