British Columbia Spearfishing Trip

I don't know about all that - but mine gives me special powers :)

There was that Logo idea: 'Freediving: The best possible human activity'

I just told my wife Tyler's Sculpin story - I hope that one makes it into the article.

That and Gabe's Ling-Cod incident were a couple of highlights for me. The former reminded me of diving when I was a kid - somebody would see a monster fish or something and bust out on the surface with a loud 'F$#@%!'

Tyler's spirit name can be 'listens to sculpins'..

So does anybody else think that the Deeper Blue t-shirts could use a makeover? LIKE A LOT?!
What would you like to see? We're keen to provide stuff that people will want but need your feedback!

She's out of town right now - I'll remind her to check in when she gets back.

Thanks again for providing those shirts for the trip. We were going to autograph them all but couldn't get together a marker. In retrospect Ling Cod blood would've been appropriate :)

Can anyone tell me what the first song in Brianna's video is? (watch your man or something like that)

Here is a screen shot from Brianna's video showing the characteristic V-flex of my custom monofin. The V-flex definitely increases stability, and maybe efficiency.

I noticed that - watching you guys swim. It occurred to me this would prevent side-slipping. (the monofin that is - I'm sure Brianna's gaze is very stable as well)
I'm surprised how inexpensive the waterway fins are.

Sorry guys that I have been a little silent here since we last parted ways, but I was taking advantage of the rest of my vacation time. I first went home to Tahsis for 4 days or so, just basking in the nice weather and doing some maintenance. After all that diving in Telegraph Cove, I really didn't feel I could do any more... until I went for a hike down to Mozino Point and stared into its dark waters with the sun high overhead. Man, I was dreaming of having my gear at that point. Didn't dive however. I returned to Vancouver to prepare my sailboat to depart in a few days. I just returned to Vancouver after four days sailing. First day to Secret Cove on the Sunshine Coast; the next day sailed by wind for 7 hours to Powell River and motored on to Rebecca Spit on Quadra Island (just off Campbell River); the next day relaxed, ate junk food at Heriot Bay on Quadra, and then sailed to Cortes and Marina Islands; today sailed into Fisherman's Wharf at Campbell River.

It was a fantastic trip and extremely hard to come off the boat and drive back down island and walk into the inferno (Vancouver). However, this weekend coming, I head back to Campbell River and intend to sail to the HMCS Columbia, off Quadra Island, where a gather of freedivers is taking place. This will be some amazing diving.

Anyhow, the long and short of it is, I have read all the posts and thoroughly enjoyed hearing everybody's comments, and seeing the great photos and videography. I have some part to play in such things, but as you can see I have been bogged down by utterly stressfull conditions that make me a dull boy. ;) I have a video tape to somehow get onto the internet, some photos, and some writings. Stay tuned... we can drag this out so it feels like we are still there. :D

Chris and Claire, there were some photos I took on the Casio of basket stars, kelp, and divers during the first session of the first boat dive. I have not seen those up anywhere?

Jim, I may have to go buy another miniDV camcorder to transfer the tapes to computer. I returned the other one.

Brianna, I almost broke a gut at the end of the video! Nice little bloopers scene. ;) Fun video in general to see. Good job.

more comments to come... tired, wind burned, sun burned, swaying to unseen waves on my feet, late... fj jfsad ll df893 fj

Wow, you have been busy having fun still Tyler. I am back at work day dreaming of the sea. Nice to hear the report and of your safe return.

Tyler - I'll check with Claire when she gets back. Good to hear from you. Sounds like a blast!

Ok, I posted a collection of photos to Chris' gallery. They are at the end.

Did anyone get any photos or video of the spot with the hordes of monster greenling. I don't think anyone will believe me when I tell them that we had 8-12 around us on every dive....we need documentation. :head

I got a few shots there, and I think some of the footage - did you see the one where the greenling appears to be kissing my ice fin? - but it doesn't really convey the sense of how many their were.

I see you got the Marten - and Pete Under Glass!

What were those black and yellow fish with the prominent dorsal spines called?

These are from the really abundant greenling area near the Seals. In the second shot you can see another greenling and a china rockfish. I'm afraid my camera was on the wrong setting so many of the shots I took were blurry. Best there would've been a movie though - there were fish everywhere. I found the China Rockfish the most circumspect - they also were more bottom dwellers than the other rockfish. Alot of my problems getting close came from being either underweight, too much current, or reluctant to lay down for aspetto on top of all those urchins :)
The Greenling were generally very predictable and would come right back if you settled on the bottom. Main problem there was they came back in so quickly it was hard to focus! Obviously much to learn about photography though Tyler's pointers really opened the door there.

(just watched Brianna's great video again. It's my fav. I wonder if we could get a higher res version up there at some point)
