Bass do hide in String weed/Bootlace weed and they also hide under ledges and in holes etc. Sometimes they might be digesting food, sunbathing or even lying in wait to ambush prey, who knows? It's hard to say which state of tide works best as is never seems to work twice in a row. Personally i've always seen more on a rising tide bit i'm sure others will say differently. Try fishing your local spots at different stages of tide to see what is about.
Hi all, have not had any good diving on the north coast all week due to the northerly winds. Stupidly tried a night dive outside Newquay harbour but the vis was terrible and conditions to choppy so got out with just a mullet. Went to the south coast Wednesday and even though vis was patchy I picked up a couple of lobsters, brown crab, couple of nice pollack and another pollack. HOWEVER, all that brushes over possibly what may become a serious stuff up as I am still in need of counselling after missing quite probably a minimum 10lb bass from less than a metre away. I found a slab of rock with stringweed and while moving through the shallows and iffy vis, found myself above this absolute dog, lying up snoozing in a crevice on top of the slab. I completely over-reacted and did not line up properly on the top of it's head and the spear went down the side of its eyeball uselessly into the rock and with a massive thud and almost a bass for a new mask, it was gone....I did not know what to do with myself! So I got out!
Anyway...I am in Newquay till Tuesday evening so if anyone fancies catching up, boat or shore then let me know. Will definitely be heading for the south coast around Mevagissy tomorrow.

Been out a couple times this week.
Did a sennon trip on thursday - saw quite a few small fish but nothing dramatic, worryingly seemed to miss any decent sized ones I did decide to shoot at! Couldn't hit a barn door that day!
Fished down the lizard way yesterday, nice ground and very calm, reasonable vis. Saw a few bass but again nothing huge or worth getting worked up about. Got a nice 4lb mullet though. Unfortunately managed to shoot it in the arse and out through the mouth, making it a bit of a job to get my double barbed spear out! Need to rig my gun up with a line release clip I think so I can pull it through the other way, any tips? Anyway after killing the fish had to gut it in the water to get spear out - very messy (there were a LOT of guts!)
On the subject of gun setup...
I have switched to using the 'open' head on my gabbiano this year which retains the spear at the front end with the line rather than a 'closed' head with a hoop of metal or plastic you pass the spear through. All you gabby fans out there - which do you use/prefer?
I seem to be missing a lot of shots at the moment and wondered if it might have something to do with this setup? (rather than admit I am having a stinker!). I know this setup gives you a better line of sight but I can't help thinking that as soon as you fire the gun the line slackens and allows the spear to deviate off course, whereas a closed head will keep the spear on course until it leaves the gun?? Does that make sense? Any thoughts or opinions would be grateful...

i use 2 gabbys (77,100) i missed loads of fish using the smaller gun. not so many with the bigger one but i think thats down to me snatching at the trigger when firing! I think everybody has a day or two now and then when they cant hit a barn door! stick with it there deadly when you get it right

See the attached photo of the clip. It is one i got from spearo dave. It works a treat and as dave told me "the nice thing is you don't have to remember to clip it together again."
I tried to get some other like the swivel clips you get from the fishing shops but they were too small and no good!
Anyway, managed a dive on the south coast today. Viz was about 8m and it was a really good dive. So quiet no on the beaches. My freezer and fridge is looking nice and healthy now. It is a shame the air temp is starting to drop. The water will soon follow

I've never found a fishing clip that could take the repeated pounding of a spear yanking it in two! Maybe my local tackle shop doosn't sell a big enough version! Last thing you want is to see your spear fly off into the murk and never see it again!

That was the same as me. I even asked for the most heavy duty ones they had and the ones i got were too small and fiddly. A pain in the arse to be undone with gloves on!
Foxfish, does your local shop also stock spearguns?
I went down to the Veryan Bay area the other day and had a lovely assortment of fish, in vis that varied between 3-7m. Quite a high tide and tiring dive but I moved from beach to outer headlands and have a new favourite south coast spot. Fish included Small eyed Ray(I think), Bass, pollack, mullet, plaice and even a scallop. All will be welcome on my table:t
I had a great dive yesterday in Newquay with at least 10m vis which was like diving in Greece. I was swarmed completely with sandeels, most I have ever seen from beginning of dive to end. I took a golden grey totally unawares on a stealth dive shortly after entering, then added 3 of the bigger bass (3lb) from at least 50 schooling bass that stayed with me for about 10mins. They were super fast though and I missed several whilst diving in awe. Once I had taken a shot they seemed to know and swarm all around me even bumping my loose glinting spear. One of the bass I shot even had a fish hook and a small crab in the stomach.
Some pics of my goings on including NOT MY CATCH! FISHERMAN a 2kg crayfish caught about 5miles north of newquay (first in about 30 years)...that is a very big basket and that lobster is equally big.:mute

We dont have a proper spearfishing shop over here but we have some serious fishing tackle shops. Berkley swivels are normally rated in their breaking stains - very small ones are about 50lb big ones 500lb. If you think about top casters like Magpie they can throw a 5oz lead 250mts at several hundred mph connected to a 60lb mono leader & a swivel!
I use 1.2mm mono on my guns that is about 180lb breaking stain but the crimps drop that by 20% so call it 150lb bs. the swivel clips I use are rated at 250lb bs. Then you have a shock absorber (bungee) & the stretch in the mono, shouldn't have any probs mate?
I always use swivel clips on my line as they can be very useful when removing the spear from a head shot or when you get a tangle.
My asso 115 is the most powerful gun I use, it has about 5mts of mono & gives a bit of a tug if you fire it horizontally. I cant remember firing any guns straight down but I guess this could give more of a tug?

Sorry Sunfish poor choice of sentencing....the lobster and cray were from the pots of a fisherman near me. Wish they were mine!rofl
Wish they were mine!roflBig clips etc can be ordered from the states and it doesn't cost that much really. i got a load of various marlin fishing swivels and links rated in the 1000's of lb ranges.

New experience today. Sat in a large shoal of bait fish waiting for Bass to ambush the pack. I saw them parting and as the pedator came into view I got my first glimpse!! ... a seagull rofl ,
It steered away as another 1 came in from behind inches from my mask.
Another great thing to have seen.
