Cornwall 2007!

Just been out on north coast testing out my new homemade float-line. Vis still pretty poo and very choppy - the northerly wind is a pain. Sheltered spotts (away from wind chop) will perhaps be ok and I reckon the vis will lift over the next 2 days. In 2 hours I spoked a few bass which dissappeared into the murk, but was very pleased to find a school of red mullet which, unfortunately drifted away very quickly and didn't come back (not a very curious fish are they!?). Not very productive but still enjoyable. One last thing..... take yourt floats this bank hol weekend - yaks and ribs were everywhere

Just spent a few days further West (Badlanders hunting grounds!).
Tried a spot close to Pothleven, the walk out was hard! Lovely Viz but few fish. Later tried a spot close to the Praa. A lot of Mullet but the Bass I found were only schoolies which I estimate were around 1 - 2lb, far too small to shoot.

Then went further West to a spot I had wanted to try after Badlander giving its location away by his photo ;>). Had already sent him a pm about the spot. An amazing place! Bit deeper than I'm used too but sooo much string weed, ledges etc. Amazingly I spotted no Bass or Mullet but took a nice sized Crab for the pot. Interested to know Badlander as my time was limited if you've gone beyond the low cliff which is right angles to the shore, it kinda makes a cove if you undertand where I mean. Really exciting place. , any close encounters with the boat trafic? , I put a bouy out but didn't venture to far out as I was concerned with the boats.

Before I left I tried a spot close to the mount but again found the Bass to be small. Great Viz all along the south coast the past few days.

So a few good Mullet , a Crab but no Bass this trip.

Spots not named in respect for Badlander ;>)

Tried a dive yesterday and struggled with the boats! Even flying an A flag the guys in their boats are either blind or don't have clue about flags!! As i don't have a boat myself i am not sure but i believe there is a minimum distance they should stay away from beaches? At one point i had speedboats pass either side of me going flat out! Couldnt run the risk and headed right next to the rocks. Came out empty handed!

Hoping tomorrow morning is fruitfull!

Pav,i'm intruiged...i've been grounded lately and if you're round my area i'd be pretty stoked if you'd give me a shout fishing wise....i'm not gonna give too much away here but i'd be glad to share my sh*t face to face as i'm always up for a fishing buddy, other than that,i've earned my 2 days hunting...seriously though, gimme a shout if you're still about.

Thanks Badlander. It always seems like a last minute thing nowadays since the arrival of our baby! (Back in N Devon now).

I will be around again October 19th - 26th ish depending on weather (wife + baby are going on a holiday with her parents so I'm free to play all week!!)Internet access is limited once I'm down so if you have a mobile or land number you can pm that would help. Cheers.

Wow. What a day! Started up early with Spearflap and headed south. Took his boat out for its first trip and hit the jackpot! 15 Bass and 1 mullet between the 2 of us. Smallest bass came in at 43 cm. Finally got to use my rob allen 110 for the real reason that i'd set it up for. Love the reel!! I could of lost at least 1 of my bass if i didn't use the reel!

Things started bad when we tried to start the dive on a wreck. Found it on the GPS and i dropped over. Green water! Dived down to about 10m and couldnt see anything (including the surface) so deceided against trying again! A quick trip over to the reef and my first dive landed a nice bass! After that they kept on coming. As soon as an area went quiet we move on a little! Viz was very patchy though. Lots of suspended matter. Almost looked like it was snowing!

Well done to Spearflap though. He hit the gold mine on one of the reefs and caught me with my tail between my legs. Spearflap 10 - Gutshot 6. Good work fella. I still got first blood though :t

BBQ it is tonight then.

Thanks Podge. Are you ok? Nothing too bad i hope. It could have turned out with me in hospital too last weekend! Camping in 30mph winds and rain tends to make things a wee bit difficult in any marrage! I though she was going to put my speargun where the sun doesn't shine!

I had a look at that spot. Looks very good just not last weekend!

Get well soon

Made it all ok till Tuesday and then had a trip in a ambulance to Truro where they whipped out my appendix.(bloody cornish fish and chips)rofl Other than that a lovly holiday.
My mrs's said that when i was in hospital she slept with my speargun just to remind her of me:inlove well that and she was in a quite barn conversion in the middle of nowhere.:)

Ouch, that was a bugger, the weather was just starting to pick up then!!

thanks gutshot for a great day, just fed 6 of us,and 6 very happy people.exellent days catch, plus one dogdey ear and a swollen finger must of been spined by a bass as they did put up a fight.
ps. hope you get well soon pogde......

Dived in the far west last night, way way down west.Vis was 10m + i reckon but due to blocked up sinus' i was having trouble diving.Managed to sort it out a bit towards the end and saw plenty of schoolies but nothing worth shooting. Then towards the end of the session a large male seal suddenly appeared and took an instant shine to me,i'm sure it's the ice fins you know, seals seem to love me.Anyway,he proved himself to be pretty mellow so i hung out with him for the swim back and promtly missed two red mullet due to me having unloaded my gun due to the seal.Nevermind.
This morning we had a few hours in on the south coast and vis was 3-5m.Not a great deal about but i managed a medium sized bass and my mate got 2.
Going to have a family and friends day out down falmouth way tomorrow so obviously we'll just sod off in the boat for spear.
Hope everyones been getting in and catching fish.

just back from a little camping adventure up the coast, stayed in the van at lansallos in the national trust carpark - top free campsite! Found some good fishing in the area. Took my old 70cm cressi pneumatic gun and a thin (3mm)suit to save space in the van, and to play down the real purpose of the visit to the girlfriend ;-). Never really got on with the pneumatic gun before and forgot the loader this time so had to use it with a trident head! not ideal as it has a really limited range, and makes a mess.... try pulling a trident out of a bass head!
The short range did mean I had to hide properly and cover the eyes etc ...dont seem to bother with that so much with the long elastic fantastic so it was good fun

added bonus was couldnt stay in more than about an hour in a 3mm suit so the girlfriend didnt go mental, she says 5 hours is too long sat on the beach?

anyways vis was pretty good and plenty of fish
Jim

Managed a few dives in the past week.
Thursday I shore dived in the far West, plenty of fish about, but fairly grotty viz, I got a few fish including the 9.5lb one in the photo. The frustrating thing was there were bigger fish in the school with it but I couldn't get a shot at them!
Saturday morning I went out on the south coast with another forum member in his very posh RIB. We left nice and early to avoid the bank holiday "Birmingham Navy" issues at the slip. Again viz was a bit dissapointing, but we got a few fish, best was a 7.6lb bass I found snoozing under the kelp on an offshore reef.
Looking good for all of this week as well
cheers

Nice one Dave !!9.5 lbs is the stuff of my dreams for the mo - got my 1st bass wings yesterday so well chuffed but not quite as big !! Was diving @ Osmington & spotted another spearo in the evening - but too far away to say hi - missed a sizeable mullett but getting my eye in & seriously considering a faster more powerful gun . Has anyone any experience of Omer tempest - theyre fairly cheap on the net & a mate has one but is new to this like me. Like the fact that the pneumatics are short & manouverable but as mentioned before am a bit concerned about the method of loading for a low back problem. My 55cm cressi band gun is a doddle just arms and sternum (but me thinks not up the mustard for bigger gnarlier fish.... Would a Mamba be more difficult to load than a tempest?

dave - you did'nt launch from fowey did you? saw some spearos in a big bling yellow rib coming in early saturday at the car ferry slip?

yeah nice wetty by the way! whats with the colour then?
rowed for porthleven in the gig racing saturday afternoon bloody hot it was.
Good day yesterday on offshore mark near lizard, vis was'nt great maybe 3-4 m and bit too much tide for it really but some nice fish about althought not in the numbers you get on the neaps out there, only saw one fish bigger than 4-5lb. Used a kayak dam site easier than swimming !
