Here is a picture of todays result but i look like a bit of a lemon... the self timer had me puzzled!) , very chuffed with the fish, but my spear line snapped on another bass , also looks like i have lost my mask and snorkle somewhere

Quick update from N devon! ;>)
Viz has been poor. Had a few trips down the coast for clear waters. A few Bass and Mullet but the bigger fish seem a bit harder to find than last year but put it down to hours in the water.

What has amazed me this year is the size of bait fish shoals! I have had viz restricted but the pure size of these. Most exciting thing I've seen is the Bass attacking this shoals as I've been central to the shoal. Can only describe them as jet fighters , the speed they come in at!

With better weather today i had some hope for the north devon coast but as soon as I felt things could improve winds went swest and it started raining :head

anyone know of any other shops apart from Spearguns by Spearo uk ltd finest supplier of speargun, monofins, speargun and freediving equipment
i am going to call him on monday but just incase are there any others? where does everyone get there equipment?

Portland Oceaneering are always open and very good with lots of gear. only 2.5 hours drive too for you.
There is a dive shop with some guns in Falmouth near the maritime museum but its is limited and the staff just sell em to you no help or advice.
Aquanauts in plymouth is similar with cheap but nasty guns for chavs in surf suits
I'd go to portland or call them great service and help.

The scalp lotion i have is called Elocon and i got it from the pharmacist.I've also got some stuff called swim ear which is basically the same stuff.They both mainly consist of isopropyl alcohol.They both work pretty well.Google 'swim ear' and you shouldn't have any trouble.

be really wary of strong steroids like elocon in the ear. they thin the skin and make rupture way more likely.:naughty
Stick to olive oil if its wax or use dilute vinegar if its smelly discharge. if no joy get your gp to have a look . locorten Vioform is a broad spectrum antibiotic with anti inflammatory properties so I use this.
Isopropyl alcohol is just the carrier fluid so you could always try vodka but not chilled or youll get the whirlies

I tried the swim ear once! Felt like chillie powder in my ear.. burnt like hell.
Is locorten Vioform a prescription only drug? I suffer from reasonably frequent ear infections (currently on Erythromycin).

Is their a "anti bacterial" solution that is safe to rinse your ears out with after water sports?

Dave at spearo is where i get most of my gear although i have had one or two bits for apnea, an online shop ( Apnea NEW Online Store ).

Very quick to send you your gear with min fuss. My only warning is when i got a knife from them it had the tip cut off so it was blunt!!! A little odd as it was for killing fish. I thought the idea was to send the knife thru the brain, not club them over the head with it! The fella from apnea tried to tell me that was how all spearfishing knifes were made. He has not seen the sporasub snake! A lovely knife. All my bass have liked it

A photo of a white shark off newquay in the local papers was confirmed as a white shark. Mind you the fella had been cage diving in South Africa a couple of years ago. Somethings about the photo and his storie don't ring true. I think he talks out of his arse!

I dive solo off Towan head all the time. I strap bloody fish to my belt and Pee in my suit all the time and so far to date i have only lost one arm!

I tried the vodka trick once but kept missing my ear and getting it in my mouth! By the time i had given up trying i couldnt stand up!

Dived south coast last night somewhere near kennack sands.
Vis was patchy maybe 2-4m and bass were a bit thin on the ground.But the Mullet were like i have never seen...seemed like hundreds,just constantly coming past,some big some small and they were chasing the bait fish about.It was pretty hectic but i tried to persevere for the bass.Missed a couple of average bass and bagged 3 mullet on the swim back.


As to the scalp lotion,i was prescribed it by my local GP and it's helped my ear unblock several times with no pain or obvious side effects.

Glad i got up to see dawns crack this morning. I quick dive on the south coast was just what the doc ordered. On my first dive one of these fella's jumped onto the end of my spear! Could have had two more but i hate trying to pull out the spear from the tail thru the head so i waited for a better shot. Never mind :hmm

Viz was ok. Upto 6m in places, less in others but shed loads of bass. Still half asleep most of them!

If you rig your line so that you can unclip it you won't have to worry so much about shooting down the middle of a fish. I did this once and you're right, it's dead hard getting your spear out. Landed on some rocks untied the line and pulled it right through in the end and had to re-tie. Took ages.

Now I use a quick release catch thingy so I can unclip, pull the line through the fish (if required) and quickly re-attach line to the gun.

I have an opportunity to spend a couple of days with a family in Polzeath. Other than it being full of tourists is there any decent spearing spots nearby? I won't have access to a boat. Cheers.
