Just had a north coast dive at Trevone and vis was 6m in sheltered bay and then dropped to 3m out on the Newtrain reef. Plenty of bass moving around but all quite small. No decent pollack. Ended up with only 1 nice fat Mullet for my trouble. Saw some good crab for the first time in ages so may pop back this week with a bag.

I think I may try South East Coast on way to work this week in the hope of some consistent vis.

Has anyone been in East of Looe?

Ed

I've had a fair bit of fun on the North coast over the last three or four days. The vis has steadily improved and all the dives have been excellent ending up with an early start near Trevone (was your mullet taken from near the beach Reddie) on Sunday morning, sunrise was good from in the water (which was warmer than the air!) I blanked but didn't care. I had four bass over the weekend including two super 4lbers so the larder is full enough. After a pretty miserable two weeks or so it was really nice to see the bottom from the surface and not get thrashed about in the swell and I remembered why I'm obsessed...... Just got to figure how to get in again before the wind picks up again.......

Napper,

I did start off over by the beach amid those nice plump mullet, but saw no bass anywhere near 4lb.

When I was getting out the wind had picked up quite a lot and was putting up a 2 ft swell coming in from the NE. Perhaps this was the cause of the vis closing in because it was flat when I started.

Perhaps Constantine/Boobys will stay clean over the next few days.

Ed

Dived the south coast yesterday. Saw a few bass to start with but none which were in postion to shoot. Loads of mullet too which were all easily shootable. After a while i made up my mind to take a mullet home as to not go home empty handed and a movement out of the corner of my eye made me hold off taking the mullet. Good job to as it was a fat 5lb'er which wanted to come home with me. Got 2 big fillets out of him which was enough for 4 people. Just eat 1 fillet tonight with my better half and the other one is in the freezer.

:) great gutshot! Its nice to see pics.

I hate that helpless feeling when the guns unloaded and the 5lbers appear!

I went in at Portwrinkle on Sunday morning and came out with nothing but a couple of smallish pollack. I did see a school of something more interesting in the shallows on the way in - i considered a top shot, but couldn;t quite make them out enough - when I dived they had gone. I searched around a bit but found no more than a lure.
my wife has belatedly reported seeing a speargun on Seaton beach wall on Sunday. Any of you?

Got in tonight down on the south coast near Porthleven.Vis was 5m and there were a few fish about.Took a couple of mates down one of which got his first fish,a mullet which was pretty enjoyable. My other mate took a couple of good sized wrasse as he was curious to discover for himself if they were good eating or not.I however couldn't hit a barn door and missed everything offered.Saw a couple of good sized bass as it got dark but they were having none of it.Also saw a bloody great big makerel but he also must have had other plans and headed off into the gloom.Good to get in but getting a bit sick of the lack of bass round these parts.

My last 2 trips have been disasterous despite good conditions on the south coast. Very few fish around and shockingly bad aiming on my part. Couple of days ago a long range shot must actually hit a juicy bass on the front of its head and bounced off :( Must have been just when the biongee kicked in on my line lol I was gutted.

dived south coast last night good viz got 1 good size bass and shot 1 nice red mullet wich tore off, viz is looking good for the weekend again, think i might invest in a tourch as the nights are getting dark quicker now, anyone recomend a good reasonable tourch..

I believe LED torches are the way to go these days. My only advise would be to keep the size down as much as possible.

You are right about the nights closing in, not long till the clocks go back and then night diving here I come. Im already finding myself checking reefs for potential night dive spots :)

Guys there's lots of info on torches, if you use search button. I have used a UK C8 for a couple of years. I fitted it with rechargables and use the 13 watt bulb (it has 2 bulbs). It lasts an hour and a half.

I would recommend at least 10 watt halogen and at least 4xd cells or 6 x C cells. However LED's are the future. FAMAS (?) are the biz with 3x3watt LED's equivalent to 20+watts halogen and a long burn time of 2 hours+. However £150 - £200 aint cheap.

I have ordered yesterday a Princeton Tec Shockwave LED torch. About £80 and a lifetime guarantee. Comes complete with 8 non recharge C cell batteries. Will swap them for my rechargables when they run out. 7 Day shop here in Guernsey are cheapest internet rechargable batteriesand under £18 is VAT free. Check them out if you need to save a few squid on batteries.

Podge has the PT Shockwave LED. Don't know what he thinks?

Spearflap, reds need a careful shot. Bane of my life. Buggers tear off sooooo easily.

Scott, check out the sandy bays for night work. At night the fish tend to be inshore on sand rather than over the outer reefs. That's one of the main advantages plus dive safe so start easy.

spearflap,

my idea has been to pimp a car tyre inner tube to float a 12v car battery and hang a scrap yard head lamp on the underside for night dives. time and effort will tell.

Hi guys, had a great night dive with REddie on Wednesday and found it a fun experience. REddie saw one doable bass but it was so close it was difficult to take a shot - saw plenty of smaller brown crabs and one lobster.

The nice thing was the different variety of fish that we saw, although most were too small to consider.

Basically a great dive experience.

Went out again yesterday and it appears that although the wind has dropped, the viz is appalling at less thatn 1m in most places and couldn't dive under it as it was poor everywhere. Wasted 1/2 an hour before

It appears that St Austell Bay was visited by 2 mid water trawlers last week and there was a strong smell of fish after they left; hence one of the inshore boys checked the bottom where they were anchored and found hundreds of dead bass!!!!! I think they have been reported - so there may be some groundbait offshore from Polkerris.

Took the dog for a walk this morning and found that the viz appears far better than yesterday so may try later.

Stay Safe

Took out the kayak today to hunt out some new fishing grounds. Found 2 new reefs which are about 4m under so they proved tough to find. All marked off on the GPS now for next time. Had a few dives but as expected the current was like a river. No chance of any bottom time. It is a shame i didn't get a chance to dive it at slack water. The word is that the reefs are fishy as hell! Time will tell.

Tis a good job we took our fishing rods as we ended up with mackeral which makes up for the 6lb plus bass i watched swim away! I should have took a shot as he was only about 1ft away from my spear tip but as kelp was slightly obstructing my view i decieded to wait till i had a clear shot. He bolted!:head He had a very big scar across his head so i will know him if he makes the mistake of coming to check me out again! I am in the dog house tonight as the wife is not too keen on mackeral. Fussy these woman! I will try for him again tomorrow if all goes well.

wife is not too keen on mackeral

honest to god... my wife doesn't eat fish or shell fish :head
Its me, the cats and the dog that enjoy my catches. The Dog loves a fresh raw mackeral (with head cut off).

Had a great weekend of weather and waterside antics on both the north and south coasts this weekend.. took the boat out on saturday and trekked from Newquay ll the way down to the Island at Holywell... a crazy looking island up close.. a bit too murky and a bit too deep to get the gear on, plus there was one of the strongest rips I've seen in the UK at the south end of the island.. curling whirlpools off into the deep! Had a nice bass, a few mackerel and a garfish on the rods.. kept the garfish for bait and the rest went on the bbq in front of a beautiful cornish sunset.

Sunday went off on my own to get away from the missus (!) and thought I'd try somewhere new.. ended up down near Polkerris and although the vis wasn't great had a really good time ambushing from the many rocks and gullies and walked away with 2 good sized fish, one bass and one golden grey (1st ever)! Looking froward to trying the mullet as I've not eaten it before... all in all a great weekend of fishing!! Hope you all managed to enjoy the sun as I fear it may be the last real warmth we see this year!

With the rod....

Brilliant torch for the money and yes I rate it highly.
Only used it a few times and got on well on each occasion.
Went out on Saturday night and had a great time with it, report on the Dorset thread.
Happy hunting gents:)

Nice one Kernowsniper you did have a good weekend, enjoy the Golden Grey, there a real tasty fish and so much better than the standard mullet.
