me to, saw a couple big schools of bass and a few loners but not worth shooting,
took one dodgy shot at a huge shoal of mackeral but missed, enjoyable dive anyway,
saw another spearo was that you badlander, mabe better for the weekend.

No better this evening! Some rain today and a small swell so viz worsening and probably the last day today where it is worth a look. Viz in some areas not usuable, but patches gave you a view to watch for passing fish.

Dogs, Wrasse and a few Bass. 1 decent 1 but in the viz it was almost impossible to get the gun behind the fish.

Then my big mistake. I finned out to a point where a guy was spinning. He was packing up so had a quick chat. During this my gun was pointing down but as a precaution I put my safety on.

I then finned out and scouted around the point as I'd seen some schoolies the day before. Its nice and rocky here and I had positioned myself in behind a rock and watched a 3lb ish Bass drift in. Easy bread and butter shot which meant I would be taking a fish home today.

Read the 3rd paragraph and you know what happened next! :head:head

Hey all.. not been in for a while.. vis aint been too great recently so once again was trawling through youtube for inspirational stuff!

Came accross this sick little edit of this pro freediver/spearo, I noticed that when he does his breath ups.. after he's taken a real deep breath he forces more air down by "gobbling" more air up.. I tried it just sat around and my static hold time increased quite a bit.. does anyone else here use this technique?

I was also wondering whether anyone has done any spearfishing in the Canaries?

Just booked a surf trip to Lanzarote for end Nov and will be taking the gear for sure!

Hi yes I have been spearfishing in the Canaries - can be awsome - I think the world record amberjack was taken there. Missed a massive Anchova there a few years ago - couldn't believe the size of it and in crystal clear water aswell. Was out of range but because of the water and size looked closer.

You should definately take your gear - but do watch out if you carry dead fish bleeding in the water around with you - they get pretty much everything out there. I did a diving course a few years ago on Fuertaventura - the dive master reckoned they had seen many many different types of shark - including a few of the biters.

Just back from a few days of snorkelling with the other half down in Cornwall. Do any of you Kernow spearos rate Coverack or Maenporth as spots for spearing? Coverack was very fishy (or Pollacky!) last Monday.

I've fished Maenporth a great deal,it's not been that great this year,if you explore either way along the coast there is some better ground to be found.
When i've dived Coverack i've always parked up on the point by the pub and swam south across the bay out the point,i've not spent a great deal of time there but it's always seemed as if it had great potential.

cheers badlander,
We swam out from Maenporth last weekend and headed left down the coast. There seemed to be some good rocky places for ambush hunts in 4-5m of water. But even I was shocked at how few fish were there in what seemed like a place with good potential for some sightings (other than the odd Rock Cook or Wrasse!) Coverack had some excellent access points and the proximity of the pub was ideal!:fridayA guy in Redruth gave me a Cressi Speargun that he was throwing out and I asked him about good hunting grounds in Cornwall. He spoke of hunting Bass in the Fal and Helford. I tried to access the Helford near Durgan but found it a total pain in the butt without a boat.

The weekend looks like we will all be surfing ;>) ... I have tested my arm tonight :crutch and although stiff now it isn't as bad as I had expected. The occasional "click" but ok ish! Physio tommorow morning so that will tell.

Whats the chance of some spearing. Praa Sands and Sennen swell forcasts look solid! Will the falmouth area get any shelter from this swell? It always seems like a mill pond when I visit!

Its going to be a case of grab what I can this weekend but if spearing could be worth a look I may have a quick scratch around. Locally its a write off for any under water activities!

i think saturday south coast dive and sunday is surf on the north coast, but getting wet is defanatly promising...

The Helford is a tricky one, there is a spot i used to take the rib to which is a really productive spot,i have to drive all the way down past St Keverne now, park up and trek 45 minutes to get there.Still worth it though.
Heading right from maenporth is always worth a go,down to the corner and out to rosemuliion point. From there to (i think) Nare Point is a bass nursery and there are rules that apply, worth looking into here

I reckon Falmouth will be fully sheltered for Saturday, only really straight south swells and easterly channel swells get in there and the wind looks good till Sunday
Glad the arms better Pav,got in today at Aggie....few lumps coming in,wore a couple.
Looks might i might be escaping to Ireland next week for a few waves, hoorah!

Bass Nursery Areas

Fishing for bass from any vessel, as well as, fishing for any species of sea-fish using sand-eels (ammodytidae) as bait, is prohibited in 37 separate areas for all or part of the year. These areas, their extent and the seasonal duration of the prohibition are set out below. The legislation is Statutory Instrument 1999 No 75 The Bass (Specified Areas) (Prohibition of Fishing) (Variation) Order 1999).
The nursery areas comprise river estuaries, harbours and power station outfalls where juvenile bass usually predominate and are more easily caught, particularly during the summer months. In certain nursery areas, fishing may also be subject to other restrictions implemented by the local sea fisheries committee or the Environment Agency [National Rivers Authority]. Such restrictions may include prohibitions on the setting of fixed nets or restrictions on the use of mobile gear.
The prohibition on bass fishing in nursery areas does not apply to fishing from the shore. However it is expected that shore anglers and their associations will respect the need for this prohibition and return to the sea any bass caught within nursery areas.

Obviously, in a conservation context, its up to you on whether you dive it from shore or not.

cheers

I've anchored up within the nursery and swam around Nare to hunt before and come back to the boat with a stringer full of bass and wondered if i was stopped and questioned about them what,if any, grounds i would have for proving they were caught well out of the conservation area.Figured i'd have no grounds whatsoever so i stopped even risking anchoring there and moved around to another spot.I must say though it was really pleasing to see just how many bass were present in their safe enviroment on the swim out.
Guess it's never really worth the risk to ignore the law though, even if i was in the right regarding where i caught them,i'd just like to avoid contributing to any negative feelings about spearos catching bass in that area.
Saturdays really shaping up for some diving, and Sunday may even have a wave, just what i ordered for my fully 'green carded' birthday weekend.

Brilliant to see tomorrows weather! - Currently training people in our Bournemouth Office and am within minutes of getting back into the car to return to my wetsuit and gun at home (oh yeas and the wife and kids) - have beeen given a green light to go out tomorrow so yipee, hope the viz is better than Monday.

Stay safe

I have my fingers crossed for tommorrow, south coast should be calm....

One problem for the southcoast in any area near falmouth,..Tallships race! I heard they are expecting 800,000 to come and watch (sounds like little too many but you get the picture!)

Interesting to read Badlanders report. I have an area which i have dived a few times and like and it sounds like the same as badlanders!

Maybe be a dive tomorrow but surfing sunday. Time to teach spearflap how to get past his knees and to his feet.

Same here Gutshot. The waves look good for Sunday. I'm still trying to get my toes on the nose!

Guys - went in this morning to get a few fish - managed a couple of small mullet - there were golden greys about! Viz was so bad I thought about not going in but still did.

Went West at Carlyon - viz was bad (gun length in places) but opened up to 2 mtres in places when I went further off shore. Over the reef this viz stayed ok but when I went east to wards the beach it went back to being s£$|%t (not very good!)

Still couple of fish for cakes later and I may take the Kids to Nare to watch the tallships......while dreaming of bass!!!

Stay Safe

took the kayaks out with gutshot today on the south coast didnt see to many bass but both took 2 nice ones each, mine was just filleted and grilled served on a plate over a chilli tomato prawn rissoto, saw so many mullet it was stupid but not much else, very enjoyable dive also saw the tall ships going out...
