Sorry to spoil the news - just got in and the vis is down to 2m+ not 3! Hard work as still a swell (wind shifted in the last 2 hours). Saw nothing except a few tiny wrasse and pollack - spent the time getting a few spiders for friends and increasing my dive times!!!!!

Hopefully summer will arrive soon!!!!

Vis was a little better this afternoon around Dodman point (between 2-4m) but even so all I saw was the resident clonker wrasse and a couple of pollack pushing 2lb. No Bass and no mullet - wierd! I suppose the unsettled weather is taking its toll, but still had a good dive scoping some new holes and gullies - always a joy.

Better luck to all of you for the weekend. I will try again on sunday on the north coast. I recommend looking for sheltered bays and keeping your expectations low, that way you can only be pleasantly surprised.

Thought it looked really promising this morning on the south coast but the time i finished work and the tide had pushed in the wind had swung and picked up and it was choppy as hell

Hmm, interesting. I went in last night on the south coast and the viz was quite good! Upto 5m in places. The surface was bad though, but under the 1st foot or so it was great. Had 3 bass come to check me out but they were skittish as hell and left as quickly as they arrived. Not in any position to shoot. Bumped into 4 more in a clearing in some string weed but they quickly left the area. Didn't see anymore but i did get in late so it was dark quite quickly.

I would love to tell you where i was but i fear if i did any chance of diving there over the week end would not be without quite a few other spearo's from here! Selfish i know but 2's company, 3 or more is just kinky!

Haven't posted in months,still read all the posts though.I also went in last night (south coast) viz was dire,not much to be seen, the 3 bass i did see caught me unexpected so no joy there.Then out of frustration shot at amedium sized pollack, missed and lost my spear due to broken line (gutted). Not having much luck this season.

to add to the doom and gloom.. as the viz here is so bad we took out the yaks for some mackeral. 2hours fishing every part of the bay and we blanked!

and its raining again! , still looks like there may be a cheeky wave to surf this evening if the winds don't switch around.

Remember last year it was during September that the mackeral started their suicide mission onto the beach! , so time for the season to start still.

Well you said it.. went and looked at the water around Newquay and the rain, wind and swell have left the vis pretty poor.. and its raining hard.. again! :vangry

Was so bored ended up looking at some youtube spearfishing footage and was amazed to see something come out of the gloom for this diver.. better still.. one after each other - talk about sharp-shooter!! Has anyone ever had this happen to them??

Nice one,

I have shot 2 rabbits with a rifle before and also 3 pigeons in 1 shot with the shotgun but never 2 fish with one spear!!

Still unlikely I'll see any fish for a while until the summer arrives!!!! OH that was supposed to be a couple of months ago!!!

Any mor of this and I'm going back into hibernation!

Surfed today as the area i dived the other night was hit by swell. There goes the viz for a while. Looking good for surf over the next few days.

As for the video, i did that a couple of years ago. A pure fluke. Didn't even realise there was another one behind him. Took a shot at a good sized bass in a school and watched it hit the deck,....followed by the other one. Unfortunately the scond one was slightly unsized :rcard. Not my best moment but i bit the bullet and took him home anyway. No point in wasting a kill. I did get ribbed for the second one and felt bad!

Viz has definitely been getting worse over the week and the water was freezing last night. Still, had 6 bass, 1 mullet and a good flounder this week. Think I'll try and get another spear in tomorrow before the swell really hits on monday and it's time surf.

Just got back form a l-o-n-g swim around a south coast bay which usually has some good vis but could not even see the end of my rubbers at times, and at best was only 2.5m. I tried to swim under it, over it and around it but the vis was equally bad everywhere. I tried to give it a go by going deep and looking up for some recognisable shadows but saw nothing but wrasse coming out of the green.

Best of luck to you all in the quest for clear water. Looks like Gutshot has found a little honey pot!

Hi REddie, I had same viz issues - a right pea-souper this morning. Saw a few pollack close-up but nothing worth a shot. What made the swim worthwhile was a close encounter with an adolescent female seal - she came to within a few meters and hung around for a minute or so. Any chance of seeing a bass was pointless after that so headed in for tasty pub lunch and some more gold olympic action.

Whats going on? Winter size swell yesterday evening. Exactly the opposite reason I started spearfishing during the summer :head ... still I managed to enjoy some amazing waves at a well sheltered spot as the peak of the swell hit with the high tide

No spearing on this stretch of coast for a while after that.

With this weather, my thoughts are already turning to the winter. I managed about 2 visits to the gym last year (it was too boring) and am wondering wether some apnea training might be a fun way of getting some exercise over the long dark months. I am considering approaching my local pools (Liskeard / Looe / Saltash region) as to wether they would allow a small group to have a lane or 2 to train with fins and masks. I reckon it would be more fun and likely to get the nod if there was a small group interested. Anyone up for it?:hmm

Yeah.. sounds like a good idea.. a friend of mine Ross Elliot is trying to get the same thing set up down here in Newquay. Hopefully it will be a great way to stay in good diving shape when the water gets too cold round here!

why stop diving? I got some great dives in the winter over that last 2 years - yeah it's cold - you just have to swim harder rofl not many round fish about but lots of flaties and it beats the gym any day!

Hey Clive I stayed in the whole of winter and it wasnt bad at all. Getting in and out of the wetsuit in the cold wind was a cracker but otherwaise very doable.

I get in early in the season when I can. Made more comfortable by taking thermos full of hot water to wet your suit down with.

Hey Googlyfloogly.
I work at Saltash Leisure Centre. They don't allow fins and masks during public sessions, but you can hire a lane or half the main pool. Its about £9 per hour for a lane or £25ph for the half pool. The only time to hire at the moment is a Saturday, or Sunday evening. I'll check times if you want. If you can get four or five people going, then it should be quite cheap.
