Hi Foxfish, I like the area but Tintagel itself has started to turn into a bit of an Arthurian theme area in recent years - bit corney. That said, the castle itself is cool & we saw several large seal there last visit and there is a nice beach nearby, on the northside as you leave the village, walk across a meadow & follow the steps down the steep cliff. Small, quiet beach with an arch (if I remember rightly). But as you live by the sea, perhaps not such a novelty thrill for you as for us.
I would recommend the pub at Trebarwith Strand --it's changed hands so I can't comment on the current landlord/lady but I loved the location 25 years ago & 5 years ago! It's small & rocky but there is surfing there under some conditions. If you walk past the pub there is also hidden sandy beach round the corner & down below. There is a small island/large rock off shore.
Not sure what state Boscastle is in these days after the big flood a while back but its worth taking a walk along the side. If it is still open the Witchcraft museum is worth a look (surprisingly good but weird). It you have time to kill, a walk up the river valley to the old church is pleasant - might have been damaged by the flood though. Watch out for the hairpin bend on the steep road into the village (was surprised by it, 2-up on a motorbike, there many years ago. Exciting!).
Port Isaac is small, quaint traditional fishing harbour & but can be crowded in season (esp. thanks to Dr. Martin TV show). The Golden Lion on the platt is a pub worth visiting. Parking is a problem - walk into the village rather than drive. Port Gavin & Port Quinn (Doyden Point nearby has some rock climbs) nearby are even smaller & quieter, I like them. Recommend you visit Polzeath (Poll-zay-uth) if time permits, it is a cool yet understated surfing beach with surf gear rental, a few basic restaurants/cafe's/chippies and surf shop, & broad golden sand beach (Pentire Head nearby has some classic, hard sea cliff climbs). Padstow (Pad-stein) is a fishing harbour will a collection of 5 or 6 restaurants owned by Rick Stein - pricey. Harlyn nearby is an odd surfer beach with some basic surfer facilities, feels more secluded/remote than Polzeath.
It can be worth just getting a map and exploring. The North & West Coasts are rugged, great for climbing & surfing. I tend to stick to the south coast for diving. Both are full of "hidden gems', I visited several times over the years but know I have barely scratched the surface. Stumbled across D. H. Lawrence's old cottage in the middle of nowhere once while searching for a popular above-sea crag (Bosigran)!
BTW I've stayed in 2 B+Bs in Tintagel over the years. Both were clean and well run - I preferred the unrated B&B we found on the day (at the end of the sea front road) over the top rated (3/4*?) one we booked in advance, on the road south out of town. We also stayed at a hotel inland between Port Isaac & Polzeath, near Port Quin, it was quite nice, lots of character and a little odd but very friendly and a handy location for visiting several locations. Clean but not as pristine as the B&Bs (can be an issue with the family because of allergies).

Blue whales and the fact they are capable of expelling 400 gallons of sperm upon ejaculation that should help to put that suit on no wonder the sea is salty

Went to Boscastle couple of years ago and they were in the middle of flood protection works which I should imagine have finished now. They had a posh new information center with lots of rolling footage of the bad flood which was amazing. Whole cars washed out to sea etc. There is also a lot of information on the pilchard (cornish sardines!) fishing industry that used to be huge there. Some really interesting stuff - worth a visit!
I agree (although not sure that it really is a free world, nor that there is any right to freedom of speech in the UK, unlike America). As long as the discussion remains civilized and factual and, ideally, friendly. The discussion seemed pretty balanced/fair to me. You have half a dozen moderators on thread now, so unlikely to get out of control
. We frequently report good service, so for balance, IMHO, we probably should allow the occasional unresolved factual complaint. It's the sort of information that members will be interested in. And it sounds like it was something of a last resort. I dare say the early fine weather has got people thinking of diving a couple of months earlier than the last 2 years.budleigh spearo,
Being a non-standard shape, choosing to go for a made-to-measure wetsuit was a no brainer for me. Elios don't charge much extra for this & it means you don't have to worry about sizing problems & the fit is great -- I'd definitely recommend it. As it was my first spearo suit & first wetsuit that required lube, not sure that I would have been able to judge if an off-the-shelf suit fitted me, even if I had access to a shop to try it on. A quick email exchange with Elios (they are small & get busy but they offer great value, so bear that in mind) confirmed I didn't need knee pads with a nylon outer (it's quite tough). I'm sure Dave will sort this out for you.

Well we have had a slight change with our plan .... 4 nights booked in Porth but canceled the castle after reading to many bad reports, so we have 3 nights free to spend anywhere in Cornwall.
So come on then where should we go?

Talking of vis porn, just took the dog for a walk down on Maenporth and it looked gin clear.In the market for a suit myself as the elios has finally died after three or four years of service.Got to get one sharpish by the looks of today and the reports from the Dorset boys!
Been busy recently with a shetland 535 we bought for the season so hopefully able to seek out some secluded spots this year.

Maybe out your way but check out The Idle rocks Hotel at St Mawes. My room there was actually part of the harbour wall and if the girlfriend at the time (Gone now) hadn't said no :rcard then i'd have been fishing out the window.

roflFunny. 2 years ago, I was able to fish from the living room sofa in the cottage we rented in Devon. Last year I was able to place a cray trap for the back porch. Never came close to catching anything of course but a bit of a laugh.
Foxfish, the Tintagel/Boscastle/Polzeath/Port Isaac area is definitely worth a look. I liked Charlestown in S. Cornwall, they have a small dock & had the ship from the Onedin line there. Nice pubs. St. Michaels Mount at Penzance is pretty cool (perhaps you've seen the French twin?) & I believe Pav dives down that way sometimes, not far from Mousehole (nice) either. Lands End itself can be a bit bleak (good climbing, mainly hard) but Sennen nearby is cool - pubs, surf beach, artists gallery, climbing round the corner. Porth Curno nearby is neat little beach & has that clear blue-green water but you are probably used to that! It's where the trans-atlantic cables go into the sea. Steep beach.
There are some interesting little town on the Lizard but that's could be a trip in it's own right. Looe is a bustling fishing harbour, a bit busy for my tastes but neat place too. Several interesting spots further west of there too. It's a little difficult knowing how to pitch seaside locations in Cornwall to somebody who lives near the sea in Guernsey though -- there is always the risk that you have something better just down the road back home
. Maybe somewhere bigger like Newquay might suit your needs better? I think it has 5 surfing beaches, cool rock "architecture" too, lots of pubs, clubs, discos, surf shops, Jamie Oliver's restaurant/cook school, surfing competitions & hot rods. St. Ives is good, pretty, establish art community & galleries. Pleasant beaches. Nice spot.

If you want to find somewhere cheaper and dont mind exploring daily I would try looking around Helston. it's great to get to both coasts and the Lizard within a reasonable amount of time.
But you will always be only 15mins away from somewhere great wherever you are in Cornwall
(even in Four Lanes?)

I went to the Goran Haven area last year (after a recommendation from 'Diver 9'). That was very pleasant - and good for spearfishing too.
Thanks for your suggestions, I have googled them up & to be honest every where looks great!
However the plan is now swaying towards 4 nights in the Porth veormanor hotel (in fact already booked) & 3 nights in Plymouth.
I have been enjoying looking at all the hotels & then checking for bad reports on the net & although I love the idea of tiny harbour hotels I also like the look of the real big ones in Plymouth & some of them have amazing reports.
