Great catch Lazuli, I’ve had a few of the old smelly Scallops myself, sort of puts you off (for about 2 seconds).

Nice catch of scallops

. Only problem was getting my girlfriend's hair through the neck of an Elios wetsuit nearly reduced her to tears. Open cell was a real revelation to me though. I could have stayed in a good few hours. In my nylon lined Elios 5mm I get chilled after 1h 30m. Great build quality on the Apneasub one my gf was using.

Try a shower cap and more lube for your girlfriend.
Cell suits are just a complete revelation after using a lined suit, once you have used one there is no going back!

Cheers Dave. I was in two minds about posting pics given the current climate, but there we go. We are going to try a swim cap to get my girlfriends head in the suit. I have to take my hat off to the Elios Apneasub brand, they are some rocking suits - highly recommended!

Podge... I have never smelt anything quite so terrible. It was enough to wake the dead! There was NO WAY I was going to eat the offending scallop. On examination my knife had punctured some kind of cankerous abcess in the shell that was growing down into the meat. Never seen that before.

Did yours have a dark yellowy brownie black sort of abscess that was held in place between the inter shell and the scallop meat with what seemed like a very thin shell of its own?:yack:yack

Exactly that. We feed next door's "ratmonkey" a lot of things, but I could'nt bring myself to do that Podge

Nice work on the scollops lazuli. I use to get scallops all the time while on scuba but only on the deeper reefs (over 10m) which are out of my range for freediving. Hey, i could do with a spare kayak paddle so if you could just point me in the right direction for those scallops, ......er i mean that paddle i will be as happy as a pig in poo!!!!

As for smelly scallops i had a really bad one a while back. The stink made you gag and the maggots where awful. I guess thats what happens when you leave one in your BCD pocket for 2 weeks :yack

Talking about kayaks, i am just getting mine set up again for the start of the season. Re-doing my battery pack and power lead for the depth sounder, tweaking the anchor and looking at a different set up for storing the dive gear and fish. Not sure why i am racing around though as it sounds like my ear op is due sometime before the end of April which will keep my head out of the water for a while.

Lol, that would never work for me. The cat would jump on my head in the middle of the night and keep me up. Sly little b****r he is but the kids love him!

Just reading about your ear op in april - where you having it done, Treliske? I've got some serious occlusion going on in both ears and bad tinnitus in my right so very interested to find out how your's goes.
See you in the south coast later in the spring/summer no doubt.

There are plenty of spots in Falmouth Bay with scallops in less than 10m, unfortunately, Cornwall Sea Fisheries Committee are trying to close them to divers

Not too sure where. I think it is treliske but i will let you know when i find out for sure. It is my second time. The first time was a nightmare and i was in really bad pain for 2 weeks until they removed the packing from inside the ear. I think they f****d up as i dont think it is suppose to hurt for so long. I have also been told the way it is done has been changed and is not so bad but i see the fella 12th march so i will fill you in with the details. It sounds like i may get rushed thru quickly as it is a bad case!

I've yet to come by a Scallop! , I guesse as they are generally reported in the Falmouth area or South coast, they are not usually found on the North coast?

Hi all,

Just decided to go for a quick dip and check out the lie of the land on the South Coast - Thought I was in for a ball breaker when I had to scrape ice of the windscreen first!!!!!

Still,I now know why I worked so hard to get my body in shape.......shape of an elephant seal!!!! - It actually was not too bad as apart from a being a little cold around my mouth.

Not much around....that;s a lie, there was nothing around - saw no fish, but did see plently of starfish and hermit crabs!!!

I am still happy at being able to get in and swim about in February!!!!

Went in yesterday as I was itching for a dive. Having spent the morning up at Gwithian talking to a foraging expert about seaweeds and other coastal fayre, the girlfriend and I made for the south coast. Went in at high tide in gin clear water. Spotted a nice big edible crab but left him to do his thing. Went out into deeper water and started checking for scallops. Seemed like divers had been around as there were a fair few empty depressions of the type made by er... scallops! I was using a home-made short floatline (5m) that I use for shallow work but found it way too short for the depths we were diving so took turns to breathe up, buddy, look after the float, etc. Some Scuba divers came and went (maybe they needed open cell or more air!). Saw a wicked black and blue sea slug grazing on some seaweed.

Found some scallops in the end and got out after nearly two hours in the water.
