Cornwall 2009

So on the advice of a couple of guys I explored the south devon coastline while house sitting for my sister. Great couple of dives, and although I only saw a few wrasse on the fish front the pppotential of the sopts is obvious. Also I was amazed by the sheer quatity of star fish and the size of the hermit crabs! Not a completeley fruitless session either as i did come out of the water with a new set of mackerel feathers 2xbreakaway leads and a flapper rig! the joys of diving rough ground. Still great to be in the water and keep dreaming of seeing fish like Daves.

the before mentioned Mullet (aka sh*t suckers)

First sunny April weekend and everyone's braving the cold for the official opening of the spearing season it seems. I managed to get in on the south coast on friday afternoon with a mate and failed to see anything worth opening my 2009 account. We did come across a good sized dogfish and after a little tail wrangle left it to it's own mellow path.

Nice fish Dave! One day I'll bag a decent sized bass. One day...

My parents can't tell them apart from Bass rofl
I find them fine to eat and I cook as Bass but also use them in fish cakes and pies. I am fussy however where I take them from.
In a few weeks they will be safe again and Bass should be on the Menu!

Do any of you guys know if theres any legislation on putting out crab pots? Considering knocking one up and chancing my arm this year as I may have use of a boat.

Don't take my word for it (and i'll probably be proved wrong)but i'm sure you're okay with one or two if it's for your personal consumption.....I hope so anyway 'cause i got one ready for this year which i'll be putting out when my boat goes in!
As for mullet, we've discovered that they're absolutely gorgeous in a fish pie.

im pretty sure your allowed 5 for non commercial you can google it and find out hope this helps

Thats what i thought on the pot front, construction will start after some beach combing for parts, and I agree on the mullet, provided they're not esturial the meat is good and the bones are big enough to spt easily. Wrapped in foil with herbs and some wine, ideal.

My girlfriend has looked into it a bit (which means that the information I am about to give you is probably hoplessly wrong - and may even land you in jail), apparently it is up to five pots for personal use only.

Hope that helps,

Gaz

Got in at Porthmeor yesterday afternoon. Lovely vis - a good 6-8 metres+ in places. So good that I could see the seal that was following me around and circling me inquisitively for most of the hour or so I spent in the water! Needless to say, didn't see a single fish...

Oh well, great to get a couple of dives in this weekend before the rain returned today! Expecting delivery of my Hero 5 underwater cam tomorrow - should be fun. At least in future my local dive spot seal encounters can be filmed for all to see!!!

I will def be interested to here how the Hero 5 performs as well. Been looking at getting one, it seems to me to be the best size/price/quality compromise for spearing ?

Hi Padaxes

I use a Go-Pro Hero 5 wide mounted on my gun. It is small, unobstructive and the footage quality is great for the money. The wide lens seems to gather more light than the normal lens. The waterhousing is good, just don't fiddle with it once its mounted or it can leak a bit. Buy a 2GB SD card for about an hours footage, and the best lithium batteries you can find, as the cheap ones won't last 5 minutes.

Check out the link to my Youtube. All the editing has been done with Windows Movie Maker.

I got the hero 5 (not the wide version though - at least I don't think - still waiting for delivery) from OutdoorGB the Outdoor Equipment Specialists - £119.31. Also got the action camera ride expansion kit (extra mounts etc to fit speargun) for £17.99. Cheapest I could find at mo.

Got a couple of 2gb memory cards from amazon for a few quid as they are always cheap for that sort of thing.

Great vids Trelawney - the cam looks pretty good. Hopefully get some footage soon - weather permitting!!

just to let you know got this from Cornwal Sea fisheries today re potting

here are no restrictions in the Cornwall Sea Fisheries District on the types of pot that you can use, but if you are fishing from an unregistered, unlicensed boat or from the shore, you can only land 2 shellfish a day (in total) from the following species: lobster, edible crab, spider crab and crayfish. You cannot store these animals up and they must be landed daily. Without a licensed, registered boat you cannot sell any fish or shellfish that you catch but from your email, I understand that this is not your aim.
Minimum sizes apply and I have attached a list of these for you. However, if you are potting inside the Fal estuary or Helford River, these areas are outside of our legal jurisdiction and some of the sizes are different (for example the lobster is set at 87mm in the estuaries and 90mm outside) but I would advise that for conservation reasons, our sizes act as a good guide and reduce the possibility of becoming confused between different pieces of legislation.

Finally, it is illegal to land any lobster or crayfish in the UK with a “V” notch cut into any of its tail flaps or one that has any of these flaps missing or mutilated. Within our jurisdiction, outside of the estuaries, it is also illegal to land lobsters or crayfish carrying their eggs, known as ‘berried hens’, or to remove those eggs, and I would suggest that this is good practise to apply within the estuaries for conservation reasons.

If you do shoot a pot or two, make sure that you use leaded line on the buoy rope to avoid slack rope appearing on the surface at low water, clearly mark the end with a buff or suitable can and take care not to shoot it over other strings of pots already in the water. If you already know how to rig and shoot pots, I apologise if this is unnecessary advice but we do occasionally get enquiries from people who have never used a pot before and I am keen to reduce any conflict between fishermen.

Seems straight forward enough

Its great once you get going.
Now, not only do you have to stalk the fish, but you have to think about getting the picture, angle and light right. Just take it with you everytime you go diving, as you never know what will turn up. I didn't bother the other day, and we ended up shooting a Conger and wrestling it out of its hole. That would have been a good vid!
