I'm the same ive spent hours looking for them, I can find flatties all the time now, I shot two plaice and a flounder this morning but bass are proving difficult to find

I've managed to find Bass, all be it not much beyond minimum size, but not managed to get close enough as it's always been in relatively open water. I don't know any good string weed patches to hunt that might improve my chances.
I had a good look for flatties last time I was swimming back over sand, but didn't spot any. I'm usually quite good at spotting them, having plenty of practice trying to spot them in the pond. That said it didn't strike me as a flattie location.
Was hoping to get out last night but a problem with the land rover meant I spent the evening under that instead.

Something else that I've been pondering is shinny spears.
From what I've seen there is generally a move towards black or camo for spear fishing, with fins, suits guns etc all coming in black or camo, yet it seems we all then go and wave the only shiny bit at teh fish. I've been wondering if the shinny bit catches their eye and draws them in for a look, or could it spook them a little.
Has anyone experemented with a less shiny spear? I was wondering whether a bit of time with some green and brown sharpies might improve things, possibly leaving the last 2 inches shinny as an attractor.
Any thoughts?

sj, not many spearo's can get near enough to bass in open water to spear them. At least 9/10 times they will swim off. You need cover. String weed or lying in the kelp is your best option. Personally I prefer shallow string weed beds but a few places I use the cover of reefs. Thats reefs above the surface. By edging around them you can sometimes suprise bass. I seldom fish aspetto although I have seen it used to good effect.

All the bass in the above photo were caught in the method Dave describes. Very slowly moving through shallow stringweed beds. It takes a lot of looking sometimes though, it took a lot of finning before i started getting into the fish. Other times you'll find aspetto is the way to go and the stringweed beds will be empty. You'll soon get an idea of which techniques work at which spots on which tide.

So far I haven't found any string weed beds or more than a couple of sqm. As I don't get out as often as I'd like it's a toss up between going somewhere where I know there are fish, even if they won't be easy to spear, and trying somewhere new looking for weed beds. Being a newbie I'm also very cautios still of safety and currents, which is one more factor pushing me towards places I know or have been recommended and explained to me.
I guess I need to spread those wings a bit. Just need to think about where I've seen a lot of string weed washed up in the past as a pointer I guess.

Just been discussing this in the office, as a couple of my team spear or snorkle. Been discussing the idea of bait or feeding, particularly as I've got about 300 frozen sand eel at home.

Got in for a couple of hours this morning to check out a different spot. Tide wan't ideal being well into the flood. Didn't see much other than small pollack and wrass. But did find some weed, so probably worth another bash at low tide. Vis was worse than I expected, so hopefully that can be better at other times. Plenty of jellys too, and more variety than just the blues.
I'm away up the line for the weekend so no fishing until next week now when the tides will be better for before and after work.

Had a quick dive this evening at my usual haunt.....first proper trip out - too much kayak fishing, 3 kids, second job and a wife that works most evening and every other weekend!
Still - saw that the sea was a little crappy and viz was very limited - decided to cut west from my usual point - picked up a pretty big male spider for the boss' tea tomorrow. Started to get my comfort back in deeper water (after my little incident last year!)
Anyway, came round an old friend of a gully from above in 2 foot of water - peered over and there was billy bass lying there...shot and.......missed! - though nothing too much of it as it had been a long time getting out here. I decided to hang around and check out all the other shallow lead ins. The bass was probably about 4 - 5lb.
Came over another gully and another biggish bass....bang ....missed! As I reloaded the gun I realised my error.....I was only pulling the wishbone back to the first notch on the spear, not the last one as I should be, so the gun was accurate it was just the fish moved...honest.
Anyway saw a few more singly big bass when I came across a monster, but he moved slightly out of my view and while I could have taken a shot, I did not want to wing it. I would estimate it to be about 6 or 7lb which is big for my favourite area.
Swam around for a while and then headed back in after about 2 hours with a golden grey and a large spider.
Great day, bass to come I think.

IMO it will make very little diff taking the bands back to second notch whilst in such shallow water, just need to compensate for the shot slightly whichever notch you use...plenty of practice and your have your eye in in no time. Good luck.

Sorry, the post was not clear. I was coming over rocks in two foot of water and into twenty foot of water where I was taking my shot. The bands make a big diffence to the speed and once I started doing this I started getting my shots.
Just rusty I guess.
