Cornwall 2010

Shocking Vis on the south coast, I went off on a mission and tried a new far away spot, but it was pea soup and I got nothing. So headed back closer to home , still not great vis but I managed to catch a bass and a pink knitted hat! Result!

Alot of time in the water for not much joy but thats life I guess. Had a breif run in with the seal and bumped into a spearo with a red boat and had a quick chat, anyone here i wonder.....

Went in for my first night dive last night and was certainly a mixed result, spent an hour over the weed/rocks and saw next to nothing apart from small pollack. Then spent 1/2 an hour on the sand and saw loads. Plenty of decent sized edible and spider crabs, loads of slightly undersized lemon sole and plaice and a few red mullet.
The one red mullet i saw which i saw was a takeable size decided to swim off as i tried to measure him against my hand ! not suite sure why he did that !
Also saw a huge thornback ray in the distance which disappeared before i got a good look at it.
Also my personal highlight of the night was the cuttlefish, not seen them before, apparently you can eat them ? Though not sure how you would catch them (tried by hand they got annoyed tried to ink me and swam off) ? let alone how to kill them ?

I love the cuttlefish too usually the highlight of my night dives. People spear them I believe, personally I just watch them I get much more enjoyment from that.

Andy, thats really great that you saw some interesting fish & creatures on your first night dive - did you enjoy the experience?
Re the Cuttle & sole, maybe you saw a Dover sole? I am with Padaxes with this one however they are perfectly edible!

I dont think i could spear them unless i saw a huge one that might be a FOM but otherwise think i would just leave them.
Definately enjoyed the experience, going again tonight so that kinda gives the indication how much i enjoyed it :)
Im not sure which one it was is there an easy way to tell the difference between a dover and a lemon sole ?

Still feeling the effects of a cold on didn't really feel like i'd be up for anything deep so heading off to the shallows instead. Felt slightly hungry so grabbed a cheese n onion pasty before diving and wow! Most comfortable diving this year. 2 min long dives with comfort and felt like i could have stayed down much longer but still playing safe after last year!

Warm water, mostly good viz except for the shallows and 3 nice bass. The biggest was the choice after i had a gilthead and bass in my sights. After deciding the gilthead was slowly moving away and would not get any closer i did what felt right,.....a perfect headshot to a 3.5lb bass.

Just got to love days like today.

Indeed, advanced nervous systems and intelligence just like octopus (which I don't eat either).

Had a great dive today on the north coast, lots of fish around, saw a big shoal of mackerel while I was lurking in the kelp and was tracking them weighing up my chances when I saw they were being pursued by a shoal of bass, picked off a 3.5lber, that had a whole mackerel in its gut lol.

Got buzzed by a basking shark again and got another slightly smaller bass.

All in all a great day :)

After Andy phoned me last night to tell me about how amazing his night dive was, I came back from Bristol on the train this afternoon, and straight in the sea for a night dive together this evening. It was the first night dive i've ever done and all I can say is... WOW! What a transformation, saw all sorts of things, phosphoresence, the milky way, shooting stars, bass, dogfish, red mullet, sole, edible crabs, spider crabs, pipefish, poor cod, and of course cuttlefish.

The cuttlefish are amazing, lying there staring at them you get the impression they are looking back at you in exactly the same way! Anyway as you can probably tell, I rather enjoyed myself :) Came home with a nice bass for dinner as well so all in all a great dive!

Got in yesterday morning for a few hours. Vis looked promising at first but was down to about 2m once I'd pushed out a bit. Picked up a decent spider crab, and spent what felt like an age trying to wrestle it into the bag. Fish were thin on the ground with only a few bass spotted.

Sold the boat now so a chance to spend a few quid on some gear. Picked up a new mask yesterday. Pentewan had a Beuchat Mundial suit in 5mm. Wrong size but should be getting right size in soon. 5mm trousers with 5mm top (hooded) all camo. About £150. Anyone know if these are any good? Is it going to be warm enough to give me a broad season? Suggestion was it should be worn with no rash vest which I find odd. Any comments? Suggestion was to lather up with conditioner/water mix to get it on. Again any comments? I'm use to a winter wetsut with a shoulder dry zip so this is all new to me. Any advice would be welcome.

I'm also trying to get to go and try some long fins. Limited options in Cornwall as best I can tell. Is there a decent shop in Devon that might be worth a visit for some fins? There seem to be a whole range of fins in the £60-£80 bracket on 'tinterweb but would rather be able to try on and buy more locally.

I have a bottle of soapy water in my bag. I chuck some down the arms / legs and slip in! A it gets colder I use a thermos flask with some hot soapy water :). They are miles warmer than any surfers wetsuit. You are best butt naked.

Personally I buy or at least try out the majority of my kit that needs trying on from Cornish Diving in Falmouth, when i bought my fins (gara professional) i went there and tried them and other makes on to see which fitted my feet best. Just had a look at their website and cant see any on there so might be worth phoning them and asking what fins they have there.

Been meaning to start posting for a while now (need to get 10 in before bringing home that FOM entry, although need to actually catch something first :vangry).

Have you had suits from the above? Also I presume slick = open cell = warmer? (appologies for my ingnorance)
I desperately need a new suit, am currently completely reliant on my trusty tube of neoprene queen holding together my old winter surf suit, so £120 sounds like a bargain.

ps thanks all for the countless words of wisdom posted here
