Ankle weights are the best imho. Easy to take off and hang on the float or throw in the boat if you dont need them anymore.
Last thing you want is your feet n fins floating up out the stringweed when you stalking sea bream
Took the rib out earlier and headed out of Falmouth and headed south. Was taking out a college mate who was keen to give spearing a go but his suit wasn't up to much and he got out after a while. Vis was murky today although some patches were up to 4-5m. Plenty of bass around though, all fish were shot aspetto and at some points every dive was drawing in bass. Dived 4 different spots and all produced bass, nothing overly large with the biggest probably around the 4lb mark. Managed 5 bass and 2 mullet in the end but gave my mate a couple of fish to take home. Really enjoyed it today.

well done badlander nice catch, and well done gutshot or should i say gloater :t:t,he turned up at my house after i had been woorking all day to drop off some roof racks, and oh by the way look what i caught, very good bass and some extra, and to top it off wife and kids been down the beach all day:vangry.any way well done, looks good for the weekend

Was not too sure what to expect today but i took advantage of the weather and took the kayak out for a long paddle to check out a few reefs. I was suprised to find the viz upto 8m and bass from the very first dive. Missed the first bass after a slight hesitation from me and then kept on finding the bass coming from the wrong angle so i couldn't line up a shot. The reef i was diving has loads of really long kelp tunnels so you can drop down into a hole and follow gullies totally below the kelp. I saw the tail end of what must be the biggest bass i have ever seen but i couldn't get the gun positioned with all the kelp around. This spurred me on to keep diving below the kelp and as i emerged from one dive i encounterd what is probably my personal best. I dont take anything to weigh fish so it was guttered before i got home but i measures up at 67cm. Last year OMD sent me a list of bass lengths and how that would roughly convert into weight and it looks like it would have been about 7.5lb. I also managed 3 other bass and 2 mackeral on the rod while paddling around. I have finally got me camera back in action too and managed some really good clips. Here is the big bass today.

I did also do an exploration dive onto a reef which i have mapped but never dived until today. Straight away i saw bass from the surface but too deep for a shot. It is a deeper reef that most with 7-8 meters being the shallowest dive i did, but the rest about 10m. Managed one of my bass of the day here which is the other big one but had to quickly call it a day as the tide picked up. Being 2 miles out from the beach i thought it was time to head back in.

I was thinking the same thing. Bloody good result though none the less.
Just checked a tucked away shore dive spot on the north coast from the cliffs and the vis looks great. Decided to ditch the kayak idea and will attempt the notorious cliff path instead. Will report later with any luck.
Nice day on the yak saturday. Dived for a couple of hours and fished with the rod for a couple of hours. Nothing of merit to shoot so paddled out to the boats who were mackeral fishing and caught a few mackeral for the bbq.
Lot happier diving of the yak as have doubled the weight of my anchor! Much heavier than needed but pyschologically has made me a lot happier paddling away from the yak without having to check it very dive! Am also now using a dive flag on the end of the fishing rod attatched by two clothes pegs which works well and is quick to setup without any extra kit.

I'd be chuffed to see a 4lb'er let alone bag one.
Sounds like a productive few days for some of you while I've been away up the line.
Hope to be able to buy a black mask this month to slightly improve my stealth.

Perfect day for a trip out spearing from the kayaks. Unfortunately i was not having the best of days. Feeling a little under the weather so my diving was not up to scratch and to top that off the viz was slightly murky. I tried a couple of pinnicles which can be very good but the viz made it really hard. Only 1 mullet seen with something else close to it but i couldn't see what. I should have stayed on the main bit of reef as by the time i paddled back down spearflap had got himself a good solid 3lber which was quicly followed by another. I, on the other hand, saw nothing but played around diving thru some very good swim thru's down between 5-8m.
After suffering the humiliation of not seeing any bass at all i headed inshore and tucked myself under the cliffs. I found a new spot which had a number of gullies running parallel to the cliff which had quite afew bass swimming up and down them. It didn't take long for me to get a good sized bass but it was hard work trying to pull the bass in close enough to get a good shot. Again this was not my day because bass number two had a good clean shot but i then watched in horror as the mono line pulled thru after my crimp failed on my line, and it swam off. I spent a while hunting for the spear and the fish but no luck. I quickly switched guns and very quickly got another bass with a perfect headshot. I figured it was time to call it a day before i pushed my luck any more. Lesson learned,..... check my gear more often including crimps!:head
Sorry spearflap, the pictures came out rubbish. Must have had something smeared accross the lens. They were lovely fish though!

I think I've only seen 1 since I started this year.
Off to the lizard netting eel tonight so might get in before hand, but big might. May have to make do with some plugging from the shore.
Aiming to get in tomorrow after work though. Hear that some of the Roseland is really murky which is a surprise, as DG looks like vis is getting good.
Is it Dave at Spearo? Is he open to people collecting gear from him at Bodmin?

Lol, no, the humiliation is from looking at spearflaps smug look as he ponses around with fish,....... actually its the same smug look i give him when i have fish and he doesn't!roflrofl
I think the friendly competative side we both have helps push each other to improve our hunting skills. It's all swings and roundabouts though. We all have our day, or in your case Padaxes, our night! I do get inspired by your night dive reports and a lillte frustrated at no being quite as committed as you for night diving. I have everything i need for a night dive but i am just a little bit too slack. You must be over the moon that the nights are drawing in??
