Took the rib out today for a little look around. Felt obliged due to spending the next two weeks out of the water after getting a tattoo finally finished tomorrow. Headed east from Falmouth and checked some spots. First spot is always kinda murky but today was even worse with low vis and poor light to start. Picked out a bass in the string weed but we decided to move on. Next spot was again really murky with vis at best 3m. Tide was dead low so decided to skirt the shallows amongst the stringweed and had but given up when i spotted a 4lber moving swiftly across my path. He went out of view and i quickly took a shot forward of his direction and luckily put a good shot through him. Final spot was, again, pretty murky and morale was pretty low at this point. Checked the stringweed to no avail and then tried a few dives on the fringe of some kelpy gullies. On my third dive i saw what i thought was the outline of a bream and took the shot. It was certainly bream shaped but i'm not entirely sure what it is. It's currently sitting in my fridge while i work out what it is. Anyone else know?

I know what you mean I shoot at shoals of mackerel when I see them with a "surely I must hit something!" mentality and have never got one yet
Worryingly Im developing a real taste for mullet, even to the point where I may prefer it to Bass. Filleted and fired or BBQ`d it's really good. Course that might just be the lack of bass.....
do the white meat test with friends and family......remove all trace of the maroon lateral colouring and cut into the same shapes....little garlic and butter...see which they can call...:t
@Badlander.....I initially thought hell that looks like a Pompano from back home but I just am not sure which of the Jacks......

Almaco Jacks are becoming more common and a few have been caught by anglers and netters in recent years. They are by far the most common Jack visitor. Never seen one in the flesh myself.
Rays bream are a very deep water species seldom found inshore (unless sick/dead).
Looks like an Almaco jack from your picture. Definitely something interesting. Any local fishy expert you could take it too? Make sure you take a picture with a newspaper for the FOM entry

Cheers guys. I would have said that given its size i'd probably avoid shooting it if i had the chance again. However, having just had it pan fried for dinner then i'd have to say i probably would shoot it again as it was simply delicious. Seriously tasty, made bass seem ordinary. My wife now reckons the bar has been raised and this is the new standard. I'm pretty sure i'll never see another one though! I've sent off a couple of photos for some confirmation but i'm 99% it's the Almaco Jack. Tribs was half right straight off the bat!
If you get a chance pop into city angling in Truro with the pictures to see John. He recently identified an almaco that a customer caught in the far west. I think at about 2lb it could have been a uk record, it was in the Sun on Friday if anyone's got a copy lying around. He did mention to me that they are electric blue. As an apparently rare visitor to these shores it will be very interesting if this is the second one I've heard about in a week.

got in south coast this evening with "spearflap" no fish for me but took some shots ,just need to perfect my aim :duhspearflap was doing he's thing again and came out with two good bass and two nice bream well done mate
