Does anyone have any suggestions for places to go in the Gerrans Bay / Veryan Bay area tomorrow afternoon/eve?

I have to head out that way anyway, so I might as well put my gear in the car! I've never dived anywhere in the area, so any suggestions gratefully recieved by PM :)

I have fished Pendower - shallow reef on West End and deeper rock slots on East end (Carne) - Also if on Kayak - Gull rock is good although beware - the tide can rip through in the area between the rock and headland!

Sorry - that is about my limit on that area.

Cheers

Agreed, edit it out and send as PM. Bad form to post spot details like that!

When you PM someone a spot your basically saying that guys ok I wouldn't mind him turning up at my home reef, if you post it your opening it up to every speargun wielding numpty on the interweb.

As you don't have to register to veiw the forum it is a bit dodgy to post exact spot details. Too many people without the knowlege of what spearing is all about can read info of your fav spots. The guys on the forum here all share tips and tricks and generally post spot info via pm's. I guess in a way we become one big happy family! I stopped spearing a few spots now because of the amount of idiots waving loaded spearguns around where as a short time before it was rare to see anyone else spearing there. I am happy to point guys on here in the right direction thru a pm which i have done numerous times before.

Here is an example which happened, just last week, to the guy whose boat we went out on last weekend. He has a fav north coast spot which spears alone. Very clued up on how to work out good tides, when the fish are around and how to get them. He is also not affraid of putting the effort in by going for long walks during the winter to hunt out potential spots. Anyway, while driving there a van was behind and when he turned off down the track to the spot he noticed the van slow down and the guys in it watch him. While he was in the water the same guys appeared on the clifftop watching for a while. He knows of them and they contacted him to try and get some info on it to which he played it down. These guys have since hit the spot hard telling others of their "new" best spot!

Nothing worse that turning up to find idiots flapping around scaring off the fish.

I appreciate what you are saying and some of the "old Guard" who no longer post on here agreed with you and I have always followed that mantra....however a general indication of an area I have fished, but never speared I do not think breaks that especially with how busy Pendower becomes in the summer.

I would point out that WSF has a very bad reputation about "helping out" newbies and giving advice and lcoations for sport, but I am also a member of other forums which do not have this reputation.....I would not want to see this forum going that same way as WSF.

I know members of forums who are renowned for reading up on catch reports, loading the van and travelling down to the west country to clear out those spots mentioned.....so I am very careful.

I leant my lesson last year after some good catches of bass. It's not something i ever thought about because for years i simply didn't see another spearo. After being a little too specific with the details on here i saw more guys with guns in one day than i'd ever seen at that spot. I agree that PM's are the way of further discussing specifics. I'm only too happy to share basic info on terrain and conditions at generalised spots much in the way that Magicseaweed provides it for the mainstream surfspots and beaches. However, there are plenty of spots that i've located through hard work and a lot of trial and error which i will keep very close to my chest. Besides the actual catching of fish for food, it's the finding of these spots and the need simply sometimes for solitude that is why i love spearfishing so much.

not to carefull you mentioned that twice.
its taken years of driving and walking finding spots and thats part of
spearing and yes its nice to give advice but north coast or south coast is better, or via pm...
searching is part of the game...

I can't say that i am familier with WSF. This is the only spearfishing forum i post on. As for the bad rep for helping out newbies there is obviously a right way and a wrong way. If i read something which hints that a newbie is likely to go somewhere at the wrong time and have the potential for it to be dangerous i help out. If someone is looking for somewhere to spear in a general area i will point them out to the well known spots with some good pointers for that spot (as i did for sj as short while back). But beyond that there should be a sense of adventure. Half of the fun of spearfishing is discovery. Two of my best spots were found by lots of effort during the winter with maps and a potential wasted dive to check it out! As it happened i was kicking myself for not going there earlier!

One thing i wouldn't have mentioned was to kayak out to gull rock! I have been there numerous times and i agree the tidal rip can be bad, but worse is missjudging the wind and have it pick up while you are out there. If you have launched from the wrong place you can find yourself in a very serious situation and the pervailing wind means this happens more often than not!. And no, i am not just guessing about kayak diving and spots as this is the main type of diving i do. Kayak diving out beyond the protection of the cliffs and shoreline is potentially lethel if you are underprepared and lacking in knowlege of tides and slack waters!

Ease up on the paranoia guys, eh?!

Info that is passed for all to see is and always has been a nudge in the right direction. I know Richie well and he is very cognisant of other members and over fishing of areas which get excessive press, which is why he would always PM where appropriate.

I really can't see the harm in posting the basic info which can be viewed from any of the satellite view map websites - it hardly constitutes to a 'specific' location. And besides, anyone would think it's like shooting fish in a barrel out there. Some of the larger reefs can take a hundred dives to get to know well (tides, drop-offs, gullies etc), so someone having a casual swim through a new area is hardly gonna clean the place out - I fish several areas which i know inside out and, even so, can still be greated with zero take-home fish when I know all the conditions are in my favour.

In addition, impetuous new spearos can be seen all over at this time of year. They may be a bit maverick in their youth but to my mind if a website like this can set them on the straight and narrow (maybe improve their consideration, safety and conservational thinking) there should be more of this type of 'general' discussion of fishing ground to get novices on to this site in the first place and then hold their interest. Surely it's better to educate new divers in the way of the jedi rather than hoping they will just go away?

I too enjoy the solitude of lone diving (despite the contravertial safety aspects), and if that's what I want I can always get it.

Not trying to upset the world here; just putting things into perspective.

I mentioned my kayaking out to Gull rock as that is my main fishing technique - due to time and 3 kids, 2 jobs and wife who works every other weekend I cannot give as much time as I would want. The fishing at Gull rock is from the kayak....I mentioned the tides because I experienced them from on the water, not under.

Thanks Eddie, those who know me realise I tend to have to fish close to home due to other responsibilities and I do not go blabbing about the best places. There are people on here and those who no longer post, who have also given me pointers which I have treated in the utmost confidence..

I am a little surpised at being told I should not have mentioned I go to Gull Rock in a Kayak....wow, I though my Mother was on here.

Sorry guys but a little suprised at the comments!

From your comments i thought you were wise to the dangers of being away from shore on a kayak but after reading the above comment now i am not so sure. If you had read what i mentioned before it is not just the tidal rip! As was also mentioned in a previous post this thread is open for reading by anyone, including those who have no moral code. Those are the ones likely to give spearos a bad name. Again another example, a coastguard mate of mine was checking up on a spearo in the water after reports about someone who may be in trouble. He clearly had fish but by the time he got up to the uniformed coastguard he had no fish??? Why ditch the fish? You work it out. I know that doesn't have much to do with what we are discussing but it does show that tendancy for the monkeys who have no interest in the ethics of real spearfishing. They also know about this site and read but don't give a damn. I know a couple from around cornwall like that but they are just too "jack the lad"

Back the kayak issue, if you are happy to start posting info to get people to kayak out to sites i hope you can feel comfortable if you hear that the same people got into trouble thruogh their inexpirenece. Oh, and paranoia has nothing to do with it. Clear examples have been given.

You obviously have no idea about who I am and what I do so insulting me in that way tends to indicate what a prat you really are.

I take it very personally when insulted like that and as far as I am concerned I will now exit stage left and leave you and your petty comments with "your family" -

Enjoy, but dont ever accuse me of not giving a damn about safety at sea - whoever they are.

I think we need to take a step back here, I didn't see any personal insults being thrown around until yours actually, just sensible words of caution.

It's pretty simple, it's a public forum so if you post info encouraging people to go to a specific spot your going to upset someone, therefore keep it to PM`s. It's not paranoia just common sense.

I mentioned about you not possibly being as wise as i thought due to the fact you missed the point that trying to paddle 1 mile accross near open water back to pendower beach, if the prevailing wind picks up, is tough going. I know because it happened to me. Fortunately i am expirenced enough, my kayak is good and long enough to be able to deal with it. It was still tough, even for me to get back in. The wind was perfect at the start and no forcast predicted it to pick up. Others may not be as well prepared, especially as i hear alot from people want to try these things!

As for the insults, your last post contains the only insults so far and you post will contain the only insults!

Easy Tiger’s:):)
I take it that all is cool with the forever mellow Cornish Brigade.

Now then back to this business of top secret spots, if you’d all like to post you’re top spots with easy access point, none of this walking for miles, no tide to fin against, a shit load of fish to shoot and a pub on the beach for when I get out, that would be great as I’m on the way down on 2nd Sept for a few days.:friday:friday

Just to pont out that DB has changed recently and as i dont auto login when i look at DB at work :p for obvious reasons dont want to look like im doing anthing other than working hard.

Now when you try and look at the forum without being a memeber the following message is displayed.

"Hey there!

It appears that you've exceeded the maximum number of posts you can view, but wait, there's a simple solution. To unlock the forum and continue viewing messages, all you need to do is sign up for a free account. So yes anyone can view the forum but now they have to sign up to look at the forums and hence discourage probably the people that 'flap around'
