A while back in Dorset I shot a scad and got to looking up info on it. I read an interesting article (The Moet of Mackerel) and have always had a little sashimi when I can. Saturday out on the boat about 3 miles offshore in between the single bass, cod, gurnards, basking sharks and dolphins it was no different as the opportunity arose to enjoy a little $58 scad (aji) sashimi as it came off the hook! As we had all hardly eaten breakfast, it was very welcome!

Interesting article.

Looked up a bit more about ike jime, the technique they use to preserve the mackerel and it sounds like it's worth trying. Here's how to do it: [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ike_jime]Ike jime[/ame]. Has anyone tried ike jime in the water? Sounds like a bit of a chore as it requires some precision and I guess a hard surface to work on.

Decided to try a new location today as my normal spot has been void of bass for a while now, for the first 30 mins it wasn't looking good with 1 metre of viz but I decided to push on into a nice looking reef, turned out to be a great day although I lost my biggest one which managed to wriggle of the spear :head.

really good session the other day in our good old cornish waters. should have bagged 4 or 5 more bass but cant complain after landing this beast. It put up a good fight as well taking me right down underneath the kelp at the end of a long dive (for me anyway) trying to secure the spear which very nearly pulled out. Amazing day out with a bbq'd bass which fed 10 people with ease! 9 1/2 lberrrrrr

shot a big old bass last week 9 1/2 lbs. had the chance of hittin two other monsters but damn they were some nervous fish! although the season is still definately in full effect!

Wow, really nice footage there Padaxes, thanks for posting.

I read this thing about Basking Shark behavior where a group of sharks would corral a shoal of mackerel, bunching them up so much that the mackerel would release their eggs leaving a red slick in the water.
The sharks then cruise around mopping-up the slick, thought that was pretty clever.

Just back from a few weeks in a caravan (borrowed). Didn't get out as much as I'd have liked but did secure a bass and get frustrated about not being able to get close to a big one that was rather shy and bolted whenever I got close. Will have to try to get back and get him some day.

Did manage my first night dive which I enjoyed. Think I saw a few Bass that were staying beyond the edge of the beam. Saw lots of small squid though and bagged a nice modest place. First time I've eaten it and have to say I thought it was very good.

Also did some shore fishing and bagged some bass, a couple of which have gone in the pond to hold some stock over the winter.

Looking forward to some more night dives.

This is a little off subject, I know, but can anyone recommend a decent and affordable insurance company that covers surfing holidays?

Me and the missus are off to Morrocco for a week later in the month, and I want to make sure that we are well covered in case something goes wrong.

Hehe not at all! Glad to see your name on the list for the october meet, at least I won't be the only one getting abuse from fat scubies about the camo suit then!

As for insurance, TGIC was cheapest for me for scuba diving, might be worth looking at.

We have updated the rules so please ensure you read them ( in full) before posting your enteries, paying particualr attention to the Entry rules 1 - 7​

Rules


To have your catch entered in the UK Fish of the Month (FOM) competition you must satisfy the following rules.

Membership.
1. You must have been a current active member of the DeeperBlue.com Forums, when you made the catch.
2. You must have been a member of said forums for a minimum of one calendar month prior to making the catch.
3. You must have previously posted at least 10 times on said forums under your user name as described in 1. above, when you made the catch.

Catch

1. Your catch must not break any laws currently enacted in the country where it was taken.
2. Your catch must be within any size limits as laid down in the country where it was taken.
3. Your catch may be of any fish species and including cuttlefish, squid, crab and lobster but excluding scallops.

Method

1. You must have been fully immersed in water when you made the catch.
2. If beneath the water surface you may only have been using the practice of breath hold freediving to make your catch.
3. You must have made the catch by hand, using a hand spear, a polespear, a Hawaiian sling, or a speargun powered solely by your own manual loading effort.
4. No method of capture must break any laws currently enacted in the country where it was made.

Entry

1. You must have posted a report of your catch including details of its weight and with a clear photograph, on the DeeperBlue forums.
2. A picture, with a daily newspaper in the background, must accompany the entry to prove date of capture.
3 Accurate scales must have been used to weigh your entered catch and DB staff may request proof of this.
4. All entries must be in by 23:59hrs GMT on 2nd of following month. (e.g. April entries to be in by 2nd May)
5. You may post your own entry on the appropriate FOM monthly thread.
6. Staff reserve the right to modify or even reject and delete entries that do not comply with the rules.
7. All weights must be entered in Pounds and Ounces
Result

1. All winners will be chosen by popular vote on a DB on-line poll.
2. A draw will result in the first posted entry winning.
3. Voting will last for 5 days once poll has been set up.
4. You can enter as many times as you like every month but you will be asked to nominate only one entry to forward to the poll.
5. In the event of there being 20 or more individuals entering the competition a short list of 20 will be chosen by DB staff.

Staff decisions on all matters relating to the FOM are absolute and final.

Just read your blog on the basking shark encounter and its inspired me to make sure I have a go at it next summer. Will be getting in as soon as the vis clears up to try and find a shoal of mackerel as well! Great vid and post
