Cornwall 2010

Bit more picking of brains if I can please. My good ladie is quite keen to have a crack at spearing. She's keen for us to try to pick a holiday destination for next year that's good for spearing. Plan would be to pick somewhere warm so a gun would be all she'd need, on top of her snorkel gear as a starter for 10. we're planning to aim for a vila and take the outlaws as they're great at looking after the little one to give us time to spear. If Nic likes it I can try to get her a suit, although I haven't found any ladies spearo suits yet.

So somewhere warm, shallow and teaming with taisty fish that you can spear and gin clear water to top it off. Wouldn't mind some larger fish to give me a bit of a challenge too.

Any thoughts, or better still experience?

Sardinia is good - but expensive - I stayed in Costa Paradiso which was nice - had plenty of bream and barracuda. There are nice spots near Isola Rossa also - there are threads on DB which will give you more details on these. You can take very nice boat trip up north towards Corsica in the marine reserve and you will be amazed at how many more fish you see close up - Giltheads, Grouper, Bream, Dentex all which have little fear of you.

I like the Canaries and have also had good experiences in Mallorca and other Ballearics aswell as mainland Spain - let me know on PM if you are interested in more info.

My missus has a spearo suit (although there is no way I am going to put a gun in her hands - it would be guaranteed to end in disaster). Her suit is an Elios made-to-measure, bought through Dave @ Spearo UK (if you are going to go down that route, make sure you order it from him about six months before you need it, just to be on the safe side).

Gran Canaria is good for spearing sj I go there quite often on the cheap as my parents live there, from what I can remember you need permission or a permit and a doctors checkup before you can spear but when i spoke to someone from the guardia civil near amadores beach he just said go down the road to the quieter beaches where theres less tourists no mention of a licence/permit, visibility there is rarely below 15 meters with it being out in the Atlantic and you can expect to see barracuda and Tuna aswell as octopus and large cuttlefish plus depending on where your staying they might even prepare and cook it for you.

I was speaking to a guy who was trapping pawns from the shore in Poole a few weeks ago - he said they all bugger off after the first frosts of the season.

I'm not in the UK at the moment, so I don't know if you have had those frosts yet?

I got this wetsuit (minus the hood for £250) 4/5 years ago and its still going strong, I use it all year around for all those years, I wear a open cell rash vest underneath, a 5mm hood (separate) and 2mm gloves and in the summer i can last 3 hrs spearing in the summer if im not moving much. And if im moving around I dont get cold at all.

Have used this surfing as well and have never got cold, usually get out and still nice and warm even in the depth of the winter

The taped seams and arm cuff's work really well and they still work now, and the best thing for surfing is the front zip means that you hardly ever get water going your back.

If i was looking for another surfing wetsuit then i would definitely buy it again, but this one is still going strong and is not showing any signs of dying soon.

Went in today to have a look for lobsters, the vis was varied but I pushed on into some clear water, dived down to around 7-8 metres and had a peep under a ledge and spotted an area of disturbed sand and manage to take my first Dover Sole weighing in at 3.5lb :)
Carried on for a couple more hours and bagged a nice bass and 35 more scallops but no lobsters.
This spearfishing is getting too addictive what am I going to do when the rough weather kicks in.
