Badlander, that sounds terrible, you have my sympathy.
Just a while ago my wife's father developed problems swallowing and was diagnosed with esophageal cancer.
Its good you're getting back to what you enjoy.

Thanks for the input on possible spearing options folks. Sardinia looks worth a look.

Got the day off tomorrow so thinking of getting to the south coast tomorrow. Not a clue what conditions are like as I see Dive Genie is still stuck in mid October. Are there any other vis forecasts?

Alternatively anyone been out today and have a take on conditions?

Places close to home (England) without to much time difference or long haul flights would be Cabo Verdi or the Azores....

Checked out a couple of my regular south coast spots earlier and didn't even suit up as it looked so stired up. I'd be surprised if I could have seen the end of my arm, let alone the spear.

Just thought that some of you may be interested in a trip that im running with Emma Farrell in the Spring. We have about 5 spaces left. Its a freediving training camp in Sharm. 5th March-12th March.

We are teaching AIDA 2-4 star courses and for those with a freediving qualification we are giving general training.
Should be good for those who are keen on increasing their breath hold / depth, confidence, skill.

Got a pair of Brand new in the packet Cressi S45 rubbers available 18mm 25.5cm long to suit a 95-100cm speargun £15 posted.

Just got in from a night dive with fairly decent viz in places, not much seen for the first hour but a shoal of scad (I think) and baby plaice, had a good scan for lobsters and crabs, no lobsters but plenty of crabs unfortunately all undersize, just when I thought I was going home empty handed I was swimming towards the beach in 3ft of water and managed to bag a tidy 4lb mullet (gutted/scaled).
All in all it was a good dive but still looking for my first lobster

It was on the South East coast sj, I went in yesterday aswell for around 5 hours the vis was even better than the night before with not much swell, plenty of big mullet around but I never managed to get a shot off as they were very skittish and no bass were seen.
It looks like the weathers turning again and the swell is picking up, might be time to polish the dust off my rods to fill in the gaps of rough weather.
When the weather improves pm me sj and we can go for a night dive if you want.

Thanks for that info. I'm mid cornwall and tend to head to the south coast. Like you say, it looks like it's about to get stirred up again with a very big swell rolling in.

Maybe I should get out with the rods too, especially while I've got some live eel for bait. There are a few mid Cornwall spots that should fish well with the big swell and N winds.

Live eels or sandeels ?
I'm hearing reports of codling being caught around the north and south coast of Cornwall in good numbers, maybe this winter will be more productive than last.

Yeah, sandeels.

Should be good for any Bass still hanging around, although it sounds like they might have done a runner.

I've heard of Codling being cought for the last few months, some close to one of my regular dive spots.

I haven't seen any bass for the last couple of dives just huge mullet.

Hey Everyone.. hope you've all been keeping well and had a good summers hunting Looks like winter is now upon us, viz has all but gone.. time to think about next year!!

This year was good.. but next year I am hoping to focus on my spearing even more due to me needing open surgery crutch) on my hip which is gonna stop me surfing properly for quite a while until it has totally healed.. scary and totally shite but apparently without the op its a full hip replacement in 5-10yrs so I reckon it's best get it sorted now.

Anyways this mean lots of training and swimming pre-op and in re-hab which will hopefully allow me to focus on my diving technique much more over the next year or 2.. may even plan a proper trip next summer with the hope of nailing some large pelagics in blue water to give me something to head for.. exciting!!!

Seeing as I'll be diving much more next year I kinda wanted to open things up a bit.. find out about other things to look for.. fish wise usually I will only hunt bass or large mullet unless I come accross any other takeable tasties, then from the rocks n caves I sometimes collect mussels for a starter and occasionally the odd lobster should I come accross a good specimin. What I am wanting to find out more about is scallops.. completely forgot how good they were until I had some as a starter with the missus over at The Plume of Feathers in Mitchell. I have read a few posts on what sort of ground they are generally found on but would really appreciate any guidance on this side of things as I have no idea where or when to start?! I understand this is a sensitive subject and people as always are very reluctant to give away exact marks.. so please PM if you have anything helpful to suggest.. I'd really appreciate it. Hi Jim.

I'm coming to the end of my first season (well part season) now and I'm hoping to broaden my horizons when I next get in the water. I asked a similar question recently so worth a look back over the last few pages (I think) of this thread if you haven't already. There is some useful advice there.

I'm also interested in the comment you made about the vis is gone now. Is it typical that as we go into the colder months there is very little hope of decent vis? I still have my kit bagged up ready to go in the hope of getting out again, but if there is little chace of decent vis I ought to have a proper sort out, thorough clean, bit of servicing and get the batteries out of the torch. Would welcome some advice on whether to give up on getting in again this year.
