sj, imo the winter provides some really good diving - colder obviously! there's less plancton and debris tends to settle much quicker in the winter, giving some amazing vis - if theres a calm period of course. just sort your kit out and be ready to go...

You do get some lovely viz during the winter in calmer weather. There are a lot fewer fish around (mainly flounder and the odd dogfish), and the weed dies right back - but this also provides an excellent opportunity to go out looking for 'holes' that would have been obscured by weed in the summer (and then make a note of their location for next season, when it all grows back again).
You can still pick up bass through into December (and you might even pick one up mid-winter, if you are lucky)
I dive throughout the winter and still enjoy myself, especially on those days when the water is crystal clear (basically, I never put my gear away).

I'll keep the faith. Only got a 5mm though so probably limited to the next month.
With Dive Genie down I've got no idea what the vis is doing, are there any other sites that give an idea or is there a good rule of thumb? X many calm days, or X many days of off shore?
One of my regular spots is east facing and reasonably sheltered. Was good through the summer with the west winds not stiring it, is that likely to hold into winter? We only seem to have had odd days of calm conditions recently, today being one of them.
My chances to get out are limited so I really want to be as sure as I can be that I'll get good vis if I go.

Podge, no real issue on the north coast but the A30 was not a clever place yesterday morning around Bodmin. People in St Austell copped it a bit though and that's never good.
Fortunately i live on the side of a hill at the edge of Goss Moor. Wet but nothing the Disco and the house couldn't handle.
Had to go to Exeter yesterday. Fortunately a much later start than is normal for me so got through with minimal disruption. There were a few extra pond on Dartmoor mind.

I'm all for not wasting fish once they're caught of course, but the campaign letter does say anything about the fishing industry catching less fish in the first place. That is the big issue and the crux of the matter.
Got in today for a few hours, water temp was 9-10 degrees with the viz around 4-5 metres, no fish but managed some scallops and a nice brown crab.
Also found half a jaw bone that has some seriously sharp teeth attached not sure what fish it would of belonged to I'll try and upload a pic later.

Angler fish? I found a dead one as a child - was scared by the teeth! rofl
Haha monkfish have got a nice set of nashers but judging by the join at the front of the jawline it looks more narrow as if it belonged to a hake maybe ?

Yep definately there was other bones scattered near it including the other half of the jaw and what looks like parts that connected to it looking at the photos.

Got in this afternoon with Nick (Shiny1) for a few hours, visibility was good but the temperature has dropped a bit, I went off one way and he went the other, for me it seemed pretty quiet with only small pollock and wrasse around and after a few hours I started to lose the feeling in my hands so decided to head back empty handed, just as I'd finished getting changed Nick walks up with a tidy 5lb bass and a couple of decent sized flounders, nice to see theres still some decent bass around I've just gotta find them
