Got in this afternoon with Nick (Shiny1) for a few hours, visibility was good but the temperature has dropped a bit, I went off one way and he went the other, for me it seemed pretty quiet with only small pollock and wrasse around and after a few hours I started to lose the feeling in my hands so decided to head back empty handed, just as I'd finished getting changed Nick walks up with a tidy 5lb bass and a couple of decent sized flounders, nice to see theres still some decent bass around I've just gotta find them

We decided to shorten it based on the last 2 years been very quiet and bad weather. Shame as i won both

Knock yourselves out guys, I'll even make a trophy for the first winter cod speared while wearing speedos.
Seriously, I not sure there will be enough fish caught to keep even an unofficial fom going.
But it's not a bad idea, perhaps best catch over the whole winter?
It would be easy enough to start a fish of the winter or whatever thread and if it does take off I really will make a trophy for best fish (if anybody wants one of my trophies, that is.)
But I reckon that Shiny bloke is in with a pretty good shout already.

I've heard from shore fishing friends that there are a lot about, although typically in deep water marks, but including at least one area that I know gets speared by others here. Do they stay down deep or are they within range of us newbies that aren't getting down deep?
I've been meaning to get out with the rods as I'd like to keep some alive for the pond.

The last Cod I saw was 40m down, in the pitch black, at the bottom of a shipping channel. I'm sure they come in a bit shallower than that though. .
I'm sure if you night dive enough over winter you'll come across one. They are very easy to get close to. They only move when you're right on top of them.

Theres plenty of Codling in the Tamar at the minute but I doubt anyones mad enough to venture in there with currents, boat traffic and poor vis, then again would diving/spearing even be allowed in the Tamar ?
Yes, the Tamar is classed as 'marine' up to Lopwell weir - at least as far as angling is concerned. I'm not sure where it ends up Calstock way tho. I chatted to the game keeper/warden at Lopwell a few times when i used to go there, its a beautiful place.
Give long room a ring first and find out how far up you can dive and if you need to ask permission first. Long room 01752 66322 or on vhf channel 16 & 14

Not so sure I'd have the balls to get in to be honest, cast a line in and its instantly dragged one way or the other depending on tide.

I found and speared a nice cod the weekend with my knife and fork, your right boy they are easy to get, but the indigestion is a bugger. Finishing work for a few weeks on Friday so I will probably get in for half hour at some time I need some fish stock for the winter. Hopefully a bit of rod and line with Nick as well that'll guarantee a few.

I like the idea of a Fish of the Winter comp - a lot! (Even if it is only unofficial)
But I don't think that December should be included, as there are still too many 'summer' fish hanging around in this month (if you know where to look).
I'm convinced that there would be plenty more decent fish caught in December if people didn't hang up their wetsuits so early (or got themselves a 7mm).
For my two-pence-worth, December FOM should be re-started and there should also be a Fish of the Winter competition, to cover from Jan - March.
