Thats what the bass are like when they hear I am going spearing 
I've seen the vids from South America and watched a documentary on it, apparantly its the vibrations from the water that makes the fish think there is a predator coming and they leap to evade them.... if only

Hope to put in a contender for the FOM this month.. it's gotta happen sometime eh!
Just thought I'd post this up.. a mate of mine caught a 9lb 1oz Bass on a re-frozen sandeel beachcasting just north of Newquay yesterday.. lucky bugger - he only went down to walk the dog! 10 minutes later he was stuck into this beauty! I know it was on a rod but I guess it goes to show that the bigger fish are finally starting to show up here on the North Coast.. and I know for some it's been a long time coming!! Gonna hit it hard with the boat tomorrow.. see what monsters I can bring up!

Hi all, just wanted to say many thanks to everyone offering to help get me into the water on my visit to Cornwall. Had a really enjoyable sesh with Padaxes off Mousehole, absolutely brilliant to dive Cornish waters. Saw plenty of fish, although didn't manage to ping anything, but I think it would take a few dives to adapt to the very different temperatures and terrain. That aspect of it was actually a very interesting experience, made me realise that there's a lot more to being a good spearfisherman than just being able to do the business on your own patch. It's funny, normally a dream spearo holiday is going somewhere with plentiful fish and awesome visibility (from NZ we go up to Rarotonga or Tahiti, etc), but that doesn't teach you jack. Whereas, I reckon anyone who is a good spearfisherman in Cornish conditions would find our NZ waters an absolute doddle (once you've got your head around the shark thing - we do a few things rather differently; you NEVER keep your catch anywhere close to your body, for example, they will always go on your float line, and we tend to carry a lot more weaponry! ). So full respect to all on this forum, and an open invite to anyone here; if you do ever find yourself down under, then you're welcome on my boat any time. Only thing I might have trouble providing would be a wettie if you don't happen to be 5'11 and medium build - but definitely have spare guns/masks/floats/lines/weights etc.

Went in with TomH near St Michaels Mount to look for a wreck using phone GPS, started off well with nice 5m+ vis and no clouds or wind. Quickly learnt that the most accurate the phone was was 17m but most of the time 45m+ so quickly gave up with that and just went in where looked good. Diving around 10m and saw nothing but the odd pollack all juvenile, most exciting part of the dive was find a large overhand (vid to follow).
After we decided to give up on the fishing after an hour and half we went for a paddle around the rest of st michaels mount and have a go at trolling, had mixed result with both catching laughably small pollack but enjoyable to give it a go, any top tips ?
Also been trying out my new carbon fins for the last few dives, first tried with socks and they were too tight after 1/2 hour, this time tried with nothing and they felt fine until I kicked hard and they felt really loose so not sure what to make of that. Otherwise VERY happy with them :inlove one of the bits of kit im most happy with.

Well I got in on Friday pm, viz was ok at a milky 4-5m, no silvers seen but a nice dive with some lovely ground covered. Ended up with a nice flounder about 1.5 lb and a big edible crab. plenty of flounder in the shallows but one was enough for me. The gig was bloody good as well!! Cheers for all the help guys, will repay the favour if you ever come to Wales.

Water is crystal here on the Nqy/north coast today...yesterday was a first as had a bass jump over the nose of my board as I was paddling out...wish I had the reflexes to get the finger out and hook him mid jump but I was too busy getting a fright! It was like that carp video head dodging :duh

vis was great though.Headed down the Lizard pretty early this morning. Should have had a bit of a lie in really as the first 2 hours were a pointless exercise spent mostly deciding to sell all my gear and give up due to the lack of fish recently. However, the tide soon got moving and i quit my little internal whining dialogue and concentrated on finding some fish. Moving a fair distance from my entry point i got into some good tide and started seeing bass and mullet on every drop. I got a fair mullet first and then hesitated on a bass opportunity and watched it slowly cruise off. Next bass came in at pretty much 7 o'clock and i had to very slowly rotate to prevent spooking him. He was pretty bold though and i soon had him on the stringer. Twenty minutes later after many more encounters with lots of small bass i had a good shot on an alright sized one and decided to call it a day. Cruised back looking for flatties but didn't see any. It felt decidedly cold today for some reason and vis was poor in the shallows improving to something like 8m in the deeper water.
Got to try and make the most of this week as getting a puppy on the weekend and i reckon it might be keeping me occupied for some time!

nice one badlander, same with me and gutshot got shot got in crack of dawn water was bloody cold saw feck all most of the time viz wasnt all that.managed to take home a nice bass, 3 pollack one was a really good size, and 3 macas on a rod, for the amount of time spent in the water very disapointing, have had a few bass this year but this season has really started of shite.... can only get better summers comming..
