The waves could be fun!

God, they were yesterday. It amazes me that people would rather huddle together and surf a crap bank than maybe investigate what lies 'just around the corner'. Not complaining though, had it all to myself. Rigged up a very homemade head cam too but as soon as i scrambled down the cliff and switched it on i realised the battery was flat. Donut.

What a pain.

I'm investigating uses of the Go Pro beyond spearing. I've recently started some filming from an rc heli, including more recently a dabble into filming some surf/surfing. Hoping to work with a few surfers to improve on my initial attempts. If you're interested take a look at my you tube channel. A search for "sj257257" will throw up a few heli flights and more recently a first stab at flying the surf at Polzeath.

Loving the heli shots. Looks like a lot of fun! I'm hoping to get in the water later (hopefully with charged batteries) so we'll see if my home made contraption works.

Throwing the heli around the sky is fun. Trying to film something from it is a steep learning curve, and parking a grand of heli over the see is a little nerve racking. That heli is also a little too high performance really and is a bit twitch for smooth footage.

I'm building another platform that should be more stable and better suited to catching someone surfing etc.

Good luck with your set up.

It was forward facing but with only small waves the footage is underwhelming somewhat. Might try again when the waves get bigger or more hollow.

I'm guessing you didn't get the Go Pro Helmet version then that comes with the headtorch type mount.

I gave that a go but found that you tend to move your head quite quickly so it can make footage a bit jerky.

Trying to talk myself into going for a dive sat morning. Any ideas of current water temp?

Me too, one of my ebay dive torches arrived today sparking renewed enthusiasm for a dive. Watched a very large group of gulls aggresively feeding on the surface a few hundred metres out this afternoon. Sardines possibly? Saw it happen a few years ago closer in and there were 10 plus seals amongst the mayhem getting stuck in.

But yeah, bloody chilly mind.

Anchovies perhaps? Becoming more common this time of year on the south coast. Need to start taking the brave pills and knock the central heating back a few notches, getting too soft!

lol....nah, mine involves a cheap HD recorder crudely taped to a butchered head torch strap. I figure if i can get the same results with a greatly cheaper unit, it'll be easier to deal with when i inevitably drop it in the piss.

Yeah..

Good point.

Hope you get some good results this weekend.

Sounds like the anchovies...Boys in the harbour seemed pretty sure of them last year and it was going wild for a while around the same time of year off Lewinnick/Cribbar...

Nice to see another perspective...

Cheers.

It's something I'm just getting into, but quite keen to work it up as a bit of a small earner to support the hobbies. Also keen to tie up with a few surfers etc to use as test subjects.

Just set up a new platform that will allow me to shoot directly down hopefully or at least predominantly. Will be interesting to see what that might pick up in the water.

Managed to pluck up the courage for a quick dip with the new gun today. My heart sank when I approched the mark and saw the odd wave breaking and my entry point a brown soup. Really was 50/50 as to wether I went in but I thought I'd give it a go. Once in and moving the viz was pretty fair, what I'd describe as perfect hunting conditions. Shame about the lack of fish life! lasted about an hour until my fingers and feet started to go numb. Need new gloves and socks. About 5 mins after getting out I turned back to look at where I'd just been only to see a very large seal watching me, possibly explaining the lack of fish? Still, worth the effort and a nice first dive of the year.

Always worth a look. Pretty sure my first bass came towards the end of March last year when sea temps are pretty much at their lowest. I seem to remember seeing a few big fish around that time also.
