Has anybody ever dived around the rame peninsula, i only started spearing this summer so was wondering if someone could help me out a bit sometime? i am free most weekends

Hey jack, I'm new to spearfishing aswell and live in cornwall. I'm home most weekends and would be very keen to trying out a few spots with you. If your interested.
Cheers
Ben

Rame is my old backyard. Just choose a path, walk down it and jump in. Most of the ground is kelpy gullies, some sandy patches and a few reef outcrops. Its not dived much by shore as the walk back up the cliffs can be a bit challenging for those of an unfit nature.
Right on the end of Rame Head, in amongst the gullies is the wreck of a Greek brigantine, the Taxiarcos, which is always a good dive if there are no fish about.

Yeah Ben I would definitely be up for that sometime. Where abouts in Cornwall are you?
And thanks trelawney :) just wondering dd you ever dive between penlee and rame, because I'm thinking about trying that as a new spot for me?

Awesome, well I check this regularly so if you ever fancy a trip then give me a message and we'll iron out the details then. I work in Portsmouth but come home to helston most weekends.
Cheers
Ben

Ok cool, I should probably tell you now that I can't drive yet so that could cause problems.....?

Ah ok no worries bud, where abouts are you located? If its isn't too far I'd cone and grab you.
Cheers
Ben

Penlee to Rame is mostly shallow kelp beds, gullies, reefs and overhangs. Its very varied ground, and doesn't get much in the way of current. Its normally quite sheltered in behind Rame Head, but there is a large bull seal that lives there and he don't take kindly to strangers.

ok thanks, i think i have seen the seal before, but am unsure if it is still round here (i dont see why not though)

Hi,

First time posting on this forum, my name is Grant I am an experienced angler but a beginner with the spear and being in the water in general. I have had 5 dives in the last 2 weeks in and around the Looe area with several Pollock captured and I got my first bass on Friday, got the bug big time. I have had my best results so far spearing on low tide with max down times of around 45 seconds. Being too eager I went out last night on a high with a heavy chop, vis was end of the gun stuff and the current was so severe that I did not feel safe in the water and was in and out in a flash. I did not know if the current was purely down to the tide or if the sea state was a lager factor I think maybe it was an easterly. Also if anyone could point me in the direction of a sheltered mark in or around the area.

I have learned a great deal already looking through all the threads and hope to hear more exciting news in the future.

Went for a dive yesterday, on the ebbing tide and I didn't have a very long exit pass, so wasn't feeling optimistic. In the car, I changed my mind and decided to try a different spot that I haven't dived for a few years because I never saw anything decent there. 10 minutes in the water, and I've a 7lb bass on the stringer. A new pb, and I'm totally stoked and thinking about getting out as there was no chance of topping that. I did a few more dives, going through the motions really. A little bit later, and there's a 12lb 7oz pollack on my stringer. It was a monster. At that point, I began the swim in, which was hard work against the current with added drag. I struggled up beach with gear plus 10kg of fish, and slipped anonymously in to my car, with my mind blown. I had been diving alone at a spot I've never seen anyone else at, and it is now my special little secret spot. Chances are I'll dive it for years to come and never have a day like that though.
Well done mate. Maybe you will have another day like that and maybe you won't. Sometimes those big fish just appear unexpectedly and other times it's when you're trying for them. I just love big pollack so rep sent and good luck with your secret spot.

Thanks Sunfish. I'm getting back to the spot in the morning. Fingers crossed. Seem to remember you posting a few decent pollack reports in recent years.

Poor vis there today Gareth and some ground swell. Had a few triggers though.

Not this time. I make sure I kill them these days, then cut the corners of there mouths just to make sure. The first time I wore my new Polo Sub suit this time last year, one took a chunk out of the belly. Almost all the way through the 5.5mm neoprene.

Afternoon all,

After getting my car finally back from the garage this week I'm now free to have that raid down in to the depths of cornwall....typically as the weather turns and strong easterlies are predicted today and tomorrow which blows out most of the spots I wanted to dive....can anyone give me the heads up on vis conditions on the lizard at all please?

Cheers
Nick

Hey guys, been at work all week in Pompey and counting down the minutes till I get back and I've been told the weather is gash. Where you guys thinking of going this weekend that will be sheltered?
Cheers
Ben

Make sure you stay away from the locals. The first bout of cough/colds is doing the rounds, including me :rcard. Hoping to be fit for next week. Let me know how you get on because I tend to stick to the south coast but with wind like this my options are severely limited.
