Karl don't suppose you're still down this way? I live in falmouth but usually spear on the lizard

Hows the freediving going this year, you made it to chepstow yet?

3 hours in dense kelp forests and stringweed under the cliffs today on the south coast, 5-8m vis nice and warm. Got in at low tide and persevered. 1 silver fish seen, pb for me mullet, 5lb ish... But despite shooting at point blank range the fish just swam off with a headache. My precious 75cm gun which is a good size for this hunting has lost its grunt! Any tips to sharpen the spear tip? New bungees are in order methinks. Frustratingly the same thing happened yesterday! Why I'm not seeing more I don't know, plenty sandeels around too. Back to being a novice!

Ha Ha we all have those days.. mullet have hard heads it must of been the angle.

Evening all,
Heading down to St Austell on Saturday for a week and havent speared this side of Cornwall yet. Not after your secret holes or prize spots but any brief hints or tips of anywhere close thats worth a dive, best entry points and best tides etc would be welcomed. Also if anyones after a buddy there'll be two of us so just give me a shout

Seasonal occurrence now! Thanks for sharing foxy, interesting. Sad to see it was already dead though - I can honestly say I would never shoot one, can you imagine the havoc it would cause without the proper gear anyway!

I got in today on a kelpy reef down the lizard, finished with 45cm bass, 46cm pollock a cuttlefish and a spider crab. The big fish pie is in the oven now!
Made a bisque from the shells, instead of using fish stock. Time consuming, but a labour of love which I hope myself and my guests will enjoy!

Hi All, Not been on here for a while.. but the last few dives down here in Kernow have been pretty productive for me so thought I'd post some pics.. I was diving the offshore reefs a week or two ago, alone, in torrential rain and lightning (not planned!)... The bass were being so skittish.. one move.. they're gone! Finally a beast came out of the murk for a closer look.. no time to line up the gun so went for the hip shot and boom! New personal best Bass.. 8.5lbs 70cm. Had another nice bass on the next dive, then the lobster! Epic day! Stoked

Dived the same mark again the other day.. not much silver seen but still managed to bag 3 bass.. biggest around 5lbs, the other two maybe 3 and 4lbs.

Also had my first Guilthead on the North Coast.. stoked to get that under the belt. Vis has been pretty good of late.. hoping to line up some more dives soon Dive safe.

Anyone here from around the rame peninsula? been going out recently, but have seen nothing at all, whether that be due to me being a bit of novice or my spot choice idk, but it would be cool to meet up if any of you are from around/are down here.

Yeah quality catches all of them - that lobster isn't small either! Would love one day to get a gilthead, saw hundreds the other day in a shoal - although only 3 inches long!! They have a very distinct profile, elegant but menacing. I rather like it. How does it compare to regular black/silver bream in flavour?

I have found all giltheads to be nice to eat but unlike bass they differ from fish to fish.
I guess it depends on what they have been eating & how long they have been in our sea.
They are said to be mainly shell fish eaters but will eat what ever is available & maybe that has an effect on the flavour.
The first one I ate, about 10 years back, was amazing & very distinctive ... it had a cucumber smell!
However the next one (I actually bought a 7lb fish from a locale netter) was nothing like the same.. good but not amazing!
Since then I have eaten a couple every year & found them all to be good with a few being memorable.

Reminds me of last year in Menorca, my wife Who's not a massive fish fan went for a Gilthead sea bream for her evening meal, when it arrived it was a fine fish that was around 2.5lb and tasted amazing, she was well impressed, loads of meat
So good in fact we went back to the same restaurant 2 days later and I had to order the Gilthead for myself
Mine was half the size with little meat and didn't taste anywhere as nice as the one she had, talk about feeling hard done by....LOL

i' m going to st austel in cornwal any good viz or all milky?

Some good healthy bass around at the moment loving their Cornish summer holiday. All nice an healthy not seen any worms in the flesh, and smallest 43cm biggest 61cm. These will go nicely with the family alfresco dinners outside in the evening.

I notice the muppet on your gun there Brett, obviously you think it helps, what reaction do the bass have to it and do mullet take any notice.

Its a good question but a 50/50 answer! Yonks ago the LIC guys like Colin Chester used them on occasion around Dorset/Sussex. In all the years I have dabbled with them I think a muppet might at a push give me a split second extra interest from a bass in shallows/holes with that gun, however not in clear vis.
I notice the 'possible' interest in poor vis as the fish seem to nose down toward it and I have shot a fair few bass through the top of their head using this particular gun. My RA Carbon Tuna 100 and Omer Carbon 90 that I tend to pull from the quiver and favour do not have muppets on but I still get my fish with them
