DIVE FIT Course...

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Nice Dan, that's great news! Looks like you have some good things coming your way! All the best!

Ok Scott, I'm taking off April 3rd through the following week. I can leave Wednesday after work or Thursday morning. We have 2 extra beds if you want to drive down Wed and leave from here Thur. All sorts of options. Leaving Wed would give us Friday to chill and maybe dive Lauderdale by the sea in close, 8 - 15ft?? Jeremy advice? If we take spears we will need FL fishing licenses.

After the class we can spend Wed, Thur and Fri in Ft Lauderdale or go to the West Coast. I would say if we stay on the East Coast till Friday, leave there about 5:00 and go to my parents to deliver a fish or two and leave from there Sat morning. It's an 18 or 19 hour drive to here from there.

If Jeremy's friend(s) can take us out a day or two, that's prolly the prime way to go. Jeremy, what type of setup did you guys use down there? Shot line and tied to the float spear tied to the float? Or did you just man up and hawaiian sling and free spear? :)

I can do whatever- I up for anything. FL fishing license are cheap, compared to an out of state Wisconsin.

You won't see any sharks in Ft. Lauderdale......except maybe a nurse shark or two. I did somewhere around 1,000 scuba dives in addition to a ton of spearing in Ft. Lauderdale over the last 4 years and probably saw 5 or 6 small sharks extremely breifly.

I beg to differ. We do our FIT course freediving 3-5 miles offshore, in 500+ feet depth. Blue water, baby. We see big fellas frequently: pelagics, rays, dolphins, etc. Container ships!

Hey Paul, thanks for stopping by our thread :) I'm looking forward to this class! Wreckrunner talked it up too. We just need to find a cheap and still safe hotel down there during that time of year. 5 Months....who planned this one so far out! :)

Why on Earth don't you just ask FIT to help you find the lodgings that suit you??

We, and our facilities partner ProDive host platoons of visiting divers each year from every layer of the cake. We can tell you where to park if you plan on sleeping in your van, and also the names of the five children of Andre, the concierge at the Ritz Carlton.

Paul, I will probably call you tomorrow and leave my number to have you call me. Sleeping in the car would work, but there are 2 of us and it may be tight. You lost me with the 5 children of Andre :) The Ritz....that ain't me bro :)

Yeah........what Paul said. Paul knows the area waay better than I do. He's a little crazy though.....so don't try everything he tells you......you'll end up in jail and ashamed of yourself.

I rarely saw big stuff near the beach, but I've only been out real deep the 4 days I was with him and Martin........maybe you will see some big stuff.

You can spear at LBTS....you do need a licence, a good flag, and you'll have to swim past the swim bouys to spear. You don't need a float line or float in that close to shore......you'll be shooting mainly hogs and snapper. We just took the guns or slings and a stringer. There is a nice reefline about 50 feet or so past the end of the pier at Commercial blvd. and A1A that runs north / South. Just don't wear yourself down before that class........

Wore down? pfffft....

Um, no float or float line? That is my dive flag :) North or south of the pier? Or does it matter? I don't plan to do a whole lot on Friday really, but getting in the water would be nice, I love the water. I've never been in the Atlantic though, is it fresh water or saltwater over there? rofl

I've e-mailed back and forth with Paul a couple times about Hotel Accomodations. I hope to have something worked out soon.

The room is booked. 2 Double beds. Sorry Scott I was not comfortable getting the 1 queen bed suite. The room is booked from April 4th (Friday) checking out the 11th (following Friday). We can still get down there on Thursday. The hotel is pretty cool with squirrel monkeys for neighbors! That's my favorite monkey! I'm so jazzed about this trip now. It backs up to the Bonnet House (Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, Galleries). Freediving, spearfishing and monkeys! Next thing you know, there will be punch and pie! Dan, get on board man! Anyone else up for a great trip!?

Thanks for the help Paul.

I think you'll like that place. Lots of ProDive's ( our classroom facilities provider) instructors candidates and other students stay there. I've met all kinds of interesting folks in that place.

11 days to sign up for the lower price on the course! 3 months and 2 weeks till the course! Are we ther yet, are we there yet!? Bgill, what say yee!?!?!?! (can you tell I'm looking forward to this?)

I need to start working on some cardio training. I'm setting a goal of 100' on depth, if I don't make it...that's fine, but that is my goal!

As you'll read soon in an article I'm writing for DB on getting the most out of freediving courses, the students who focus on reaching this or that depth as their goal for a course tend to be those who profit least from the course.

The ones who get the most out of freediving courses are those who make learning the tools, techniques and methods we teach their top priority. They usually end up surpassing the number-oriented students during the course, and walk away with the skills that take them deeper and deeper, longer and longer, and most importantly - safer, for the rest of their freediving careers.

The number-oriented often fail to add the sought-after few meters to their personal best depths. The learning-oriented often double their personal best depths, or more. This observation leads to the following curious suggestion: students coming into a course with more experience are often at a disadvantage to those coming in with less. The former tend to be the number-oriented, and then proceed to keep doing things as they did things before the course, expecting to somehow get deeper. The latter, knowing they know very little, focus on the how-to, and since the how-to is the course's reason for being (uh, it works!) they're soon progressing by giant leaps while the number -oriented keep banging their heads against a glass floor.

I confess that I was a classic number-oriented guy when I took my first freediving course. Took me a while to figure out why these lousy courses weren't doing anything for me. Then it came to me: I must make myself as a Child.....submit.....resistance is futile....

Paul, thanks for the note. Based on what you told Buzz (an older gentleman I work with at the dive shop) at DEMA, I do plan to listen and follow direction. So I guess I should amend my number. My desire in freediving is to be able to get to 100' and work comfortabley and consistantly at 60-80ft. But in the class my main focus is learning all you and Martin have to offer. This is an experience I'm greatly looking forward too. The physics and physiology alone make it attractive to me.

I promise to listen and do as I'm told, unlike at home where I tune my wife out :)

Gene, Scott is driving down here and riding with me and we have a room already, so those expences can be split too. My car should fit 3 adults comfortabley. 4 would be tight, but do-able.

We're leaving ILDiver's house on the 3rd (right?) and coming back on........I can't remember - I know I have off the 1st through the 14th. So, as long as I get down there and back in those dates I'm good.
