Dorset Spear Fishing 2010

Got my aim back on today and bagged a mullet and a bass which breaks my duck for this year, and they are just cooking at the mo. Very frustrating though i had two mullet pull off the spear line. Nice to meet the comanche killer who came back in with a few fish to show for his efforts. Loads of bait fish/sandeels about not too bad vis either - nearly perfect apart from not bringing back a 10lb`er.

Where were you diving Rob? I went down to Eype after work today to go paragliding and I had my spearfishing kit in the car, but didn't go in the water as it looked pretty rough so I figured the visibility might not be any good (I'm new to the area so haven't got much experience here yet). Was it alright where you were?

Hi all,

Good and bad session:

Totaly missed the first bass I'd saw which was a sitter!

Hit the second which was 2.8lb gutted, then thought I was gonna drown because I went after the fish that had tangled in the kelp bed and proceeded to get tangled up myself, it was only seconds but it felt longer seriously thought about getting my knife out to cut my float line:







Started seeing loads of bass and the camera ran out, which I am really gutted about as the next shot I hit my first double hitter, Not double figure but two 2lb bass on one spear which was amazing, and right on the end of a really good static. Stoked.

Next I lined up on a 5-6lber about 40 seconds into my static, pulled the trigger and........ NOTHING! trigger back nothing the spear just sat there and so did that big old bass just watching me.........urgghhh!

20 minutes later gun working again missed another, getting cold time to go. Getting out met rob which was nice as its always good to talk fish with some one who is interested. Hope you enjoyed you freshly caught and cooked dinner.

Think I need a new gun thats the second time it has caused me some trouble, certainly would have bagged a few more bass if I had a longer range gun.....

Just to let everyone know, I was down at Kimmeridge earlier in the week (out walking, not spearfishing, believe it or not) and got chatting to one of the marine wardens down there. She told me that the Smedmore Estate, who own the place, have now banned spear guns from Kimmeridge Bay, and if you are seen with one you will be asked to leave.

Apparently they are concerned about the possibility of gun accidents between spear fishermen, divers, snorkelers and other users of the bay.

Not sure if it applies to people launching a boat from Kimmeridge (probably not), but if you are launching a boat with spearo gear in, it might be prudent to keep it covered up until you are out of the bay.

Just passing the info on - act on it as you wish.

Thanks for the info Gas,better to dont go in Kimmeridge to dont upset people and make the spearfishing a bad issue for some. There are so many places around the area.The main think there is that there are people that operate and runthe area like a marine reserve. So let them be free to belive in it.
Fishes are everywhere let's find them somewhere else.:friday

I don't generally spear at Kimmeridge but I know that others do. Discretion and care for other users' safety is of paramount importance if you choose to spear from there. The central bay has a "snorkeling nature trail" (which strikes me as being rocky, shallow and dangerous) and, I would suggest, best avoided.

Although they sometimes describe it as a voluntary marine reserve, angling is permitted and even encouraged. Perhaps the idea is to discourage commercial fishing/potting there -- the central bay is very shallow, so probably not a good spot to fish with a boat anyway.

That doesn't work (discourage commercial fishing/potting there). There are several pots in the middle of bay and sometimes gill nets!

Kimmeridge is a voluntary nature reserve (as its voluntary its upto you whether you volunteer or not!).
Personally I don't spearfish there because of this and would encourage others to do the same (although abviously its your choice - well not so much from the shore now!)
But i launch my boat from there 99% of the time to go fishing!
I'm down there tomorrow so will do a bit of digging on the subject just out of curiosity!

I know that most people don't use the bag, but I rely on mine quite heavily, and it is now at the point of falling to pieces.

Gaz if i can find it you'd be more than welcome to have it for the grand sum of bugger all.
I have no idea where it is mind but i'll get my maid to have a good dig around and if it comes to light i'll get in touch.
Oh and if anybody tell my Mrs that i called her the maid (i'm looking at you glowpikey) it'll be out with whatever gun i have in my hand at the time.roflrofl

Thanks mate, yes the fish were very tasty, and nice to talk to you - the two fed all four of us easily. Just wish i lived nearer the coast, would be cool to get more practice in. Few pics of my fish, and my missus with macky and wrasse caught on the inflatable

Nice one Rob, you just can’t beat fish straight from the water and straight onto the grill.

Chris,

Make sure you are logged-in, and then click on 'User CP' in the top leftish part of this page.

This will take you to your 'Control Panel' page and, underneath your 'Subscribed Threads', you will find the reputation comments that people have left for you.

There is something on there from me, from a week or so ago, I think, reference some spear gun bands I've got for you, if you still want them.

In retrospect it would probably have been better to PM you. Anyway, I've still got them if you still need them, and if you don't then no problem.
