I was face to face with the biggest bass I've ever seen today.
I had clocked a couple of nice bass moving around at the base of some thick jap weed, and was lying very still, hovering just above it, on the surface, waiting for one to show himself below me. Suddenly I was aware that the sun was being blocked by something close to me. As I slowly raised my head, my eye was met by another eye, bigger than mine, about 30cm away - I nearly sh*t myself!
As I moved my eyes down its body I realised that it was a huge, old, bass, the size of a barrel. He must have cruised past my spear tip to get into the position he was in. I tried bringing the gun around on him, but as soon as I started to move he drifted off into the gloom and the weed, and by the time my gun was in the right position, he was out of sight - gutted (again!)!
Apart from him, I saw quite a few nice bass today - but still came home fishless.

Did you shoot it?
Does that affect the cooking or taste, should be be captured alive and cooked?
Nice one all the same, I saw my first a few days ago but could not coax him out of his hole
Grabbed it on its back after a lot of effort and then held bothh claws together and wrestled it into my keep bag. When I got home I boiled up some salty water then stuck a knife in the top of its head then boiled for 16 minutes .Did you shoot it?

I can understand shellfish - why would you want to!?
But lobster is a crustacean, I don't know about spearing these. Someone will have the answer no doubt....
I work on 10mins+1.5 mins per pound . Always tastes ok to me and others I let have some,but I would be interested to hear what others do.

I can do that too. But... I dont have a zipper. Recon the mullet love it. Nothing better than wallowing around in your own piss for a few hours on a sunday mornining. The stuff real men do

Sue, I have been diving for 35 years & have yet to see a lobster out in the open!
Obviously in some areas of the UK this is quite common but in the vast majority of places lobster hide in holes.
Lobsters are generally described as nocturnal, they are not meant to be walking around in the day time!! However this seems to be a misconception as in recent years at least, you guys are finding them just plodding around asking to be boiled.
Having said that if one was out to catch lobsters you would be best looking in holes & caves on the sides of big reefs. Under these circumstances you may well want to spear a lobster that cant be removed in any other way.
Re boiling times - well for many years it was the norm to boil & boil & boil!
Many old classic cookbooks quote 5, 6, 10 even 12 min per lb but in more recent times folk have reduced the times considerably.
With small portion size lobster (1 1/4lb) I boil for two mins - that's boiling not just sitting in simmering water.
For a 4lb beauty I would go 4 mins if the flesh was going to be reused in some sort of hot dish, (ie reheated) or 8 mins for a salad.
You must however ensure the water is a good rolling boil & if the water goes off the boil when you immerse the lobster, start the timing from when the water boils again.
Of course you might like to have a firmer fleshed experience & that is fine because that is how many people have there lobster but if you want a more tender & succulent experience then reduce the cooking time

Chaps I’m not sure how many Lobster’s that I’ve eaten that have been boiled or BBQed by Foxfish but it’s more than a few and I can tell you the man knows his stuff when it comes to giving Lobsters the bad news.:friday:friday
As for the spearing of Lobster i was under the impression that it was illegal to spear them in the UK, even if they are stuck right at the back of the deepest hole you can always use a long Lobster hook to help them out but its a no to spearing them.:naughty
