Dorset Spear Fishing 2010

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Thanks Podge, always a pleasure to feed you!
OK rather than answering pms direct.......

I just love a 1.5lb lobster cooked in salted boiling water for 2mins, on removing the lobster I leave it in the sink for a couple of mins & then remove the head & claws & then crack the claws to release the trapped heat.
I cut out with scissors the creatures shell belly section including all the legs to expose the tail flesh, this I now remove in one piece.
I have no interest in the head meat just the white meat in the claws & tail, however I also discard the pink ends of the claws & I find these particularly distasteful!
Next up the meat is chopped into ice cube sized pieces & coated with a warm tarragon & garlic butter mix. I then place a little grated strong cheddar in the empty shell, place the coated meat back in the shell & cover with grated Parmesan.
I make a ring of folded tin foil to stabilize the lobster *& place in a very hot oven for about 5 mins*. If necessary I will run a blow torch over the dish to just catch the cheese & exposed meat.

* or place on the BBQ in a fish basket.

I will take some stage pics this coming weekend as I have a lobster feast planned.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I've read a lot of recipies today foxfish but that...... mmmmm :)

Sorry all, I only asked about spearing bugs as I thought there was a spearhole in the back of that lobby!
Personally I could not see the need, I wrestled with a lobster for 10-15mins last week and I gave up in the end, never really considered using my gun.

Exactly as my Belle Mere does it....and have been taught......never over cook !

Jumped in yesterday at Chesil for a look and the viz was good, the water was warm and the bottom times were going well, saw loads of Pollack, Wrasse and Sandeels but no Bass until I was just about to get out, a nice fish of 3 1/2lbs swam underneath me and ended up on the spear, I had only just got it on the stringer when another came in for a look but I hadn't had chance to reload, by the time I did it had spooked and gone and it was time to go, think if I'd had time to carry on for a bit there may have been more. Great afternoon.

Hi All,

Was just wondering if it is still a blow out for vis along the purbecks I am looking at a rising tide dive around 0900 hrs tomorrow morning, any advice would be good....

Cheers

Ryan

Great fish gaz and nice gun to.

Foxfish I considered myself a bbq master but you are a true magician.

looks like I have some time 2mrw for a dip any viz reports would be welcome as time is becoming to precious to waist searching.

Tunny and Kev,

I think Tonni Iannu and Cesar are heading to Newton's Cove tomorrow in search of a bit of shelter from the southerly that is forecast. You could always try the southern part of Portland harbour, that should remain sheltered, or even from Grove Point down to Balaclava Bay (long walk down, and even longer walk back up, with the danger of no viz if its blown out - check from the top of the hill first). Not sure how strong the wind is supposed to be - maybe you could even chance it at some of the deeper water spots along the Purbecks (it was beginning to cloud up yesterday, but wasn't horrendous - again, check from the cliffs before getting suited up).

That's me out of ideas.

Nice fish Gaz! I do have the same muzzle as you but mine is rigged with a reel instead of the boingie

Really? I thought yours looked like the slightly older version in the photos you sent me.

I'm finding that it shoots very high on the 70cm gun (although excellent in the horizontal plane). I was missing some nice fish with it that I really should have been hitting, so I took your advice and did some target practice. Turns out that I've got to dip the front end so low that I almost run out of things to use as a fore sight on the muzzle. I did that test in water with a bit of movement in it, so I'm going to go back and fine tune my point of aim as soon as I get the chance in calm clear water.

Anybody want to lend me their swimming pool?

I've got this (perhaps insane) idea that keeps popping into my head about diving the Shambles Bank in search of turbot.

I gather there are parts of the bank that can be as shallow as 6 meters and, at the right times of the year, are full of plaice, and even turbot.

The problem, of course, is the intricacies and strengths of the tides, as well as the powerful races that occur around there.

I've been out there in a RIB before, but reckon that it would be a bit foolhardy to attempt it in my little inflatable.

I was thinking of maybe chartering a local boat for the day/half a day, and combining a bit of rod fishing with spearfishing (probably wouldn't be able to spend all day spearfishing, as slack tides will be limited).

I'm just floating the idea at the moment to see if anyone else is interested, or can suggest a skipper that is knowledgeable and sympathetic towards spear fishing - or even if anyone thinks it is a stupid idea.

I know that scuba divers manage to get on there without too much trouble.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Gaz,

I had the same idea a couple of years back... From what OMD said, I pictured finding myself clinging to the sea bed while 5kt tides whipped back and forth trying to tear me loose and tangle me in a thousand baited hooks hanging down like a spider web from the day trippers fishing above...

I still reckon it would be an awesome place to have a crack at, if you could plan it properly and have an anchored boat. If you got slack tides right it would be an experience all right....

I'd be up for it if I was nearer to you. Try this skipper that I just found on the web.

Looks like he does spearfishing and knows the shambles well. Good luck with it.

Gaz, Fearthespear and Glowworm have been harping on in my ear to do just that kind of crazy thing, I’ve told them both that it’ll be a cold day in hell before I take my RIB out there but it does seem as if hell is cooling off a little and the impossible might just happen.:confused:
If it does and we live to spear another day I’ll tell you all about it.

Hi Guys,

I go out about twice a year with Chris Tett for turbot and bass at different times. Twice I have seen spearo's in from 4m RIBS on the Shambles , so would assume that one crew is way ahead of the game already!
