Dorset Spear Fishing 2011

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.

So excited! My kit has just come (Comanche 75...stringer etc) - can't wait to get in the water! Isle of Wight (camping trip with family) first..and a 'dummy run' with the kit, then down to Dorset to hit my first...plankton.

Shame Cressi don't supply a bungee with their guns...it'd only be a quid to them and make life easier.

If I'm not mistaken you have chord with that gun... I speared with the 75 and chord for a year and never once needed a bungee... worked perfect, and one less thing to assemble.

Yes, a single black chord. Cool. Ok, I'll give that a go. How did you maintain a good tension on the line? Was it with a simple stop knot on the spear end and a bowline on the muzzle tied to give tension or something fancy?

Had a fairly unsatisfying few hours down at my local spot today. Viz varied between 1.5 and 3m, but usually pretty cloudy and hard to see fish. Saw a few silver fish, but spotted them too late to take a good shot. The only decent mullet I had a clear shot at was just sitting there but when I pulled the trigger the gun seized. Grrr. I freed up the mechanism, took 3 medium pollack for barbecuing and went home. Judging by the weather forecast that's it for a while (can't make it tomorrow)...

My Cressi 90 was the same, was fine for about 18months but it is cut pretty precisely, so there is not a lot of give, bought a bungee recently and now wish I had from day 1, makes it a bit easier to load and doesnt catch your gloves. Recommended.

I'm back in Sussex now, when are you back from IOW? I'm keen for a dive!

Yeah, the cord doesn't have a lot of give, so I'm figuring loading with a bungee might be a bit easier...

Ps - I've PM'd you regarding dive dates.

Thinking of a visit to Lulworth next Tuesday evening. Never been there before, but it looks like a good bet for the strong NW and W winds that are forecast. Can I park somewhere fairly near the beach?

For Lulworth cove the parking is the main cark park which is free i think from 7pm onwards, just dont park in the overflow like i did and get locked in:vangry

Durdle door camp site car park for durdle door/man o war bay is a short walk down the cliff path to the beachs but is crazy expensive. Getting on £4 for 3 hours i think. The sign makes me laugh as it says parking is free from 10pm - 6am. Very useful!!

Been to swanage today with my girlfriend and had a walk along the peir and the viz was very good indeed. I also used it as an excuse to find belle vue road for access to durlstone bay.

There were 2 spearos getting washed off on the road with as my girlfriend put it "a massive stacck of big silver fish". Anyone from here?

My first sole and red mullet in one sesh!

Went out yesterday on a spot off portland, vis was good at around 6-8 meters.

within 2 minutes I spotted a red Mullet of about a 1lb on the bottom, took a 4 meter dive and got it on the spear, then spotted a huge rug of a sole on the sea bed and stabbed it just behind the head with the spear loaded with a red mullet. the sole was around the 5lb mark.

managed 2 good size grey mullet of around 4lb, then called it a day.

Whilst out fighting against a raging tide and swell slapping me in the face I saw the biggest shoal of huge mullet! there must have been about 200 of them surrounding me, some looked over 5lb it was an amazing sight. I shot into the shoal expecting to pull the spear in with about 6 fish on,,,but no I managed not to hit a single one.

Well glad to christen my comanche 90 with a decent fish.
