Dorset Spear Fishing 2011

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Specially for Gaz: Saltimbocca of sea bass with vegetable minestrone!

I'm impressed - although I'm sure you already knew that I never really doubted you for a moment.

Congratulations on the first Dorset bass of the season - again! :)

Edit: you gonna put that picture on the 'Fish of the Winter' thread?

Couldn’t dive yesterday as it was deemed a family day by my wife, so popped down with the family to sort out my boat. Good thing that it was still there after the winter, took the cover off and gave it a once over, brought the batteries home for a recharge and all seems well. Only problem I can see is a very flat jockey wheel tyre and the trailer tyres could do with a bit of air, other than that it’s just a matter of a drop or two of fuel and its away we go for the spring/summer.:):)
I see the new road is open then, makes it a little quicker to get to Bowleaze and a lot quicker with the new overtaking lane to get out of town. Haven’t been all the way into Weymouth or onto Portland yet, has it made much difference?
Anybody get out over the weekend? Any more Bass seen or shot?

I heard your first trip is going to be out to the Shambles bank to hit those early season flatties?

(Yep, I'm still obsessing about that!)

No need to go that far out to have the odd flatty Gaz, there’s a few starting to show a lot closer in than that.;);)
I’ve not really given the shambles that much thought since we wrote about it last year, we’ll have to see?

I’ve just had a customer in at work and he was telling me about a couple of spearo’s that had a few Plaice out from the beach at Abbotsbury, apparently they we’re getting fair pushed along by the tide but he said that he saw them string at least a couple of decent sized Plaice.
Anybody from on here?

I had a customer in today who said a mate caught a few good flatties off of chesil on the weekend

Hey everyone, havent posted on here for quite some time as ive been away, so thought i'd drop a line. Popped in today at a local poole spot, nothing seen but was good to get back in. won't be in poole for the main part of the season either as im off to cyprus for 2 years, but everychance i get to come back and have a swim i will be there.

Rob was that on rod and line or with the spear?

Ashly good to see you still around, enjoy Cyprus and keep us up to date.

Went in today at Sandsfoot for first outing of the year . Nothing seen but good to be back in and sun on the back whilst getting changed was a welcome bonus. I usually wear 3mm socks but due to my advancing years I am starting to feel the cold so bought some 5mm ones. Only problem is I can't get my Cressi fins on . Does anybody know of any other makes that come with a wider foot pocket? I have tried a size larger but the width is the same with Cressi fins.

Omer or mares....

Had the same problem, I use my cressi barefoot in summer, but with socks in winter... I needed to buy some mares razor...

Thanks for the replies about fins. Looks like I will be trying Omer if I can find some to try. If anybody is around Weymouth would they mind if I came along and tried a size 9-10 out with my 5mm sock on to see how they fit before I buy some ?

saw a fish i've never seen before today at a local spot....any idea what it is. i found a pic that looks very similar to what i saw but the one i saw had a wider mouth. it was about 2lb and it let me pic it up by the tail. it was just sitting on the bottom at the base of some weed.

Google 'lump sucker' to see if that bears any resemblance to the fish you saw.

I saw a pair last year - the male looks quite different to the female, so check out both sexes.

.

Went for a look see at white nothe, the visibility was very poor maybe 2 metres at best. No fish/bait fish seen, but the water didnt feel too cold.

Moved to another spot but with no improvement - nice to be in though and the weather was great very settled.

We had a go at Osmington yesterday, much the same as Rob above, vis was a bit better at about 3-4 meters and water temp still only 8 degrees.
The only excitement of the dive was the first bollocking of the year towards the idiot jetski types.:head:head
Bryn had a look at Cheisl Cove and had fantastic vis of 10+ meters with flat calm sea but the only fish he saw was a few Dogfish.
Plenty of weed growth, just need a few more Bass swimming around in it.
