Dorset Spear Fishing 2012

Just managed to get photos of my fish. In the end I caught a mullet 3.17lb, a gold spot mullet 1.05lb, two sole with the biggest being 1.11lb a plaice of 1.08lb and a flounder that I didn't weigh. Here's the pics

Yea mate made sure I double checked all fish for correct species, eg bobbly bits, dorsal fins etc. was well happy when it all came back correct. Lookin good bud have a good time at the party

Was a good dive Friday, but not happy at all about my newish carbon fins, they snapped on me Friday night and I had to swim for 1 mile with one leg!!

I got them from fin 4 u, they are leader fins hard camo carbon and the foot pockets are Omer stingray replicas.

I think what's happened is that the pockets gave way first and thus not supporting the blades as they should,,,then goodbye fins. I was just finnining along nice and slowly on my way back when it happened. Surely we should expect more from these??

Nightmare mate!

I've heard good and bad things about these 'faux' carbon fins - remember one guy being pretty pissed to find out that, when his fins snapped like yours, they were in fact not carbon at all - just cheap fibre-glass with a single carbon layer to make them look pretty.

A bit of sly marketing / customer deception... I'd be pissed too!

Woven glass fibre matting with a black tinted resin does simulate the carbon look very well !!!, carbon fibre is not unbreakable it just gives you maximum strength for minimum weight . Are these fins designed to be used for the rough and tumble with spearing or more for competition freediving, I use cressi garas and would imagine it would be difficult to break them ,their performance is really not an issue to me ,although it must be tempting to buy the best kit ,I do not think it will get ME any more fish !!

I purchasd these carbon? Fins as I do a lot of swimming thus cover a fair few miles especially on a night dive. These fine are lighter and are more efficiant on long distance fins in comparison to my plastics. With carbons I can swim continually for an avarage of 6 hours wheras my legs give up after 4 with heavy plastics.

If you find they make a big difference then thats good ,I would not have thought that fatigue in the material would have lead to their failure ,most probably being strained ,from, for example being sat on etc , do they flex much? as carbon fibre is usually VERY stiff ,it might be worth your while asking around the Portland area ( boatyards) to see if they can be repaired and/or strenghthend Good luck !!

I don't think the issue is with the blades, as a weak spot on all fibreglass/carbon blades is the screw in the middle that attaches them to the foot pockets. If the tendons (rails) on the foot pocket break then it leaves the blade unsupported where it will break on the screw and then split outwarda towards the edge. So I personally think the footpockets were at fault, maybe a lower grade of rubber was used which then split due to fatigue??

But if the fins are quite new then it may be worth contacting leaderfins and explaining tht the footpockets split which then caused the blades to snap. If you word it in a way that you are concerned about the reliability of their footpockets and are warning them about a possible fault, that may affect other customers they may look into it and offer a refund/exchange either under warranty or as a goodwill gesture to maintain their reputation.

Id say it should be a warranty problem as they say "All our spearfishing fins and blades come with a one-year full warranty for materials and craftsmanship" and you can see on the other blade that hasn't broken yet that the foot pocket is splitting on the rail at the point of breaking on the other fin. Which might suggest its a problem with they're foot pockets.

Definitely worth getting in contact with the company that you got them from and show them the photos of the broken blade and also of the photos of the other one that has not broken yet...

I bought a pair of seac fibrex fins a while back. Blades are built to last. Not carbon but are worlds apart from the plastics out there. Oh and the foot pockets are a wide fit perfect for 7mm socks during winter :)

I might be wrong but im sure they make there own foot pockets now and theres been loads of complaints about them.

Sorry to hear about your fins mate.
Hope it doesn't hamper your hunting too much.
I just bought a pair of the leaderfins in black, paranoid of breaking them already now!
Keep us posted if you take it up with the company- I'm interested to hear what they have to say for themselves!

Hi, I've already posted my hello on the intro's board, but found this dorest section, which seems to be what I am looking for, so here I go again :-)

my name is carl and I'm looking to get into spearfishing on the south coast of england.

I've spearfished once before on holiday (in warmer waters), always like to go for a snorkel whenever possible, and I've also done a bit of scuba diving in the past, although really at the moment I'm interested in the free diving route.

Reasons for doing this;
well i do love seafood! but I'm also interested in understanding the sea more, and conservation, and think that this is a better way of getting hold of some fish than a supermarket shelf, though less reliable perhaps

I live in the christchurch area, near bournemouth so I guess my possible range is the western end of the solent to maybe weymouth area.

If there is anyone who regularly goes out in the area, or maybe a bit further afar, who wouldn't mind an enthusiastic learner tagging along! I'd be very keen to meet and join you.

Just to mention that all this bloody rain as helped with my catches as 90% of my recent catches have come out near a freashwater run off creating a halocline; very difficult to see fish through that, but they are there and in good numbers.

Also just got back from my local pub where I bartered eight bass for three 2 course meals and a bottle of good red wine; that's around £50-£60!:):):):) going to redeem my voucher tomorrow night.

Happy days this redundancy lark; I get to go spearfishing and eat out!
