I think this has somthing to do with some archaic law based around using harpoons!

Spearo Dave was (is)the expert on this sort of thing and it has been discussed several time before, I had a quick hunt but couldn't find anything...

In Guernsey you cant sell anything caught from a boat unless the boat has a license but, you can sell any fish caught from the shore whatever the method - however the sale must be documented & declared to the tax man!

Would be interesting to know as a good friend of my parents said she could sell my fish if I ever caught any decent sized silvers to a restaurant.E Being I only caught my first two silvers the other day I haven't but thanks for bringing this up. I feel some research is in order. :-) Cherrs

mate sellin speared fish is illegal in the uk . all you gotta do is type in british speao rules and it says it pretty much everywhere. selling fish aint never worth it as the penalty is real big fine with a ban of spear gear and could also take your car. same as shootins salmon/trout silver eel. my opinion if your going to shoot it u eat it! spearfishing has bad press for bein cruel but are argument is backed up with how selective it is and the fact it is illeagle to sell the catch. i do it for food and fitness. if we started sellin fish ppl would start shooting far smaller fish just for a quick £ or 2.mainly its not sustainable income as we all know the empty handed feeling.

saying that giving fish as a gift is fine. i hav in the past taken 1 tomany fish for myself got asked e few days b4 if i would sell the fish and said i couldnt is its illeagle i then went to the restraunt and said i will giv them a bass as a gift as i didnt want it to go to waist. restraunt replyied with a nice sit down meal with all the trimmings for such a nice gesture! was a winner !!! no mony exchainged hands but and i had a fish caught by myself cooked for me at a resteraunt . WINNER!!:):)

Cheers mate I had a look around last night and found it was illegal to do so glad I haven't actually had the chance. Now I no I will give them away instead. Just got to get in the water to catch any haha.

no worrys bud. dont wanna c any spearos get in trouble as it could leave a bad taste in there mouth about the sport. welldone on the silvers mate! u will get plenty more nodoubt. just enjoy the dives is my advise. fish are a bonus.:)

Yeah cheers again bud. I'm itching to get out again to get some. I love going for a dive seeing what's about and what's in the water :-).

Yea I spearfish for fitness enjoyment of being undewater with fish and to eat them. But I think my all time favourite thing about spearfishing is seeing my nans face light up when I bring her a fish for tea, she absolutely adores fish and cooks me up an awesome meal in return.

Hi Guys, just wondering if there is anyone near bournemouth that would be willing to take a novice out. Been on a couple of trips but no luck think i need a few pointers. If not can anyone point me towards someone that does lessons atall ? Few pints as a reward ;) Thanks Alex

Hi mate unfortunately I'm not familiar with spearfishing around the Bournemouth area so probably not the most suitable person to teach you. If no one comes up with an offer to help you could drop Bryn (from Portland spearo academy) an email as he does lessons: Portland Spearo and freediving

He is a very experienced spearo and a very good teacher so I'm told. Failing that I used to watch video on YouTube and Vimeo a lot, ten watch what the spearos do..... Most of them find some cover ie weed etc, an wait in the middle of it or on the edge and wait for fish to come in before shooting them. you should practice a quiet duck dive and keep everything as quiet as possible (no huffing and puffing or kicking fins on the surface)

As for you previous question about species of fish, around the south west the most common fish are flatfish: plaice and flounder
Bass, mullet, pollack, bream, squid and cuttlefish, lobsters, spider and edible crabs. Of course there are more species but these are the most common ones.

For targeting specific fish I would advise you to type in on google, eg bass habitats etc. then you will get an idea of the areas to look for each species and you can base your hunting style on the location and species targeted. Eg stealthy ambush in weed, or hunting flatties on sand

I'll second what Matt said give Bryn a yell, money well spent in my opinion and an all round nice bloke. Tell him Joe sent you ;)

Apparently and surprisingly the east side of Portland is diveable, I am shocked to the extent I wrote off diving this weekend and committed to doing household jobs :( oh well I am hoping to do evening dives tomorrow and tues after work if anyone is interested.

That is surprising, after the strong winds we've had for the last two days I thaught it would be like mud. I may be available for a dive tomorrow or Tuesday evening, depends on my sinus as they been playing up last couple of days

Hello everyone. Ive not posted on here for ages but thought i would get back on the forum as i have just dug out my gear for the first dive of the year tonight. Ive been spurred on by the good catches that have been put up recently. I was to much of a wimp for any winter diving. This is my second summer spearing, and planning on heading down to Man O War bay tonight as i was pretty successful there last year. Im a little concerned about the viz but last year it stayed pretty clear even after a blow, im guessing the reef and rocks give the bay some protection.

Bryn is without doubt a top bloke and a very good freedive/spearo teacher, but if you want to speak to him a bit quick then you'll have to hurry as if he's not already gone then he's due up sortly to go back over to the med looking after the Gas rigs and generaly taking it easy on a bloody gurt boat.:)
He does a 4 or 6 week stint at sea and then the same back here.
pretty sure he's not doing to much teaching this year because of the games but yes def give him a try.:):)

Well there goes my plan for a dive tonight, still at work and feeling rather whirly, shirt and tie weather it is not!
Crossing fingers tomorrow works out better and there is enough fuel in the car, don't you just hate those last two days till payday!

Hi can anyone give me a viz report for the purbecks. Looking to come down tomorrow and its a long journey. Thinking either Durlestone or Ringstead.

Just read on the fishingtails website that a Spearo shot 2 bass the weekend from chesil cove one 12lbs the other 15lb! Haven't heard anything from the Lic or crystal
Vis boys so come on which one of you lot was it? :-)
