You in trouble Buster! Just goes to show that they are out there though and you never know your luck, although some are luckier than others and they tend to be the ones that get in the water alot.. I wish i had a house in Kimmeridge!

Dived today with 1 shot at a spot i haven't been to for more than 10 years.Vis was ok between 2-3 meters but as the wind picked up it died off.Plenty of fish about including 2 monster ballen wrasse over 6lb each hundreds of mullet, garfish, pollock and bass.1 shot managed 2 mullet and a bass and i took 1 bass and 1 mullet of about 3.5lbs each.Plenty of bait fish and sandeels about which is what i thought my bass was stuffed with but it had a whole 3 bearded rockling about 6 inches long in his stomach.A nice dive before the weather turns.

Had a great dive with Glowworm today at what i suspect will be our new secret spot, he's already filled in the main details so i won't bore you with them again!

It was my second dive of the year and first with a gun so i was more worried about hitting the fish than there actually being any, however, my fears were found to be unjustified as the first bass i saw i hit straight through the eyes from about 3m away whilst turning though 90 degrees! It didn't even twitch. Both mullet also fell to head shots so at least i know i can still shoot straight even if my grandmother could probably get better bottom times!

Hoping to get out again later in the week if the weather and viz improve...

Game on

Managed a last minute reprieve to visit the coast yesterday (most promising forecast for the week) - but it meant leaving early...getting up at 3am.

Viz was...Good!
(Actually poor when I first got in but further out it gradually clear up, reaching 30feet/10m at best. Always a little milky -- but NO BLOOM:)).

Saw mainly Wrasse, of all sizes including 3 v. big ones - decided against taking them on the way out & saw none on the way back. At one point I was laying in oar weed against a rock, scanning a clearing, when I felt something push & wriggle past me -- my body had trapped a fish in a cave under the rock! It was big & it look off like a rocket, silver grey, it was too close, then too far to shoot. A very large bass I think but I just saw it from behind as it accelerated away.

Picked up maybe 10 spider crabs that looked big underwater but all turned out to be too small and were returned. The biggest one already had 4 legs missing! They weren't dense on the ground as they sometimes are though, most were quite well hidden & took some time to spot.

I was finished by 9am. I was planning a long dive but had enough after 3 hours -- despite the forecast there was some light wind from the south-east (forecast said north), which started to churn my stomach. Just after 9 though, the wind dropped noticeably, so conditions probably improved later in the morning.

[BTW on the way back, saw a temporary police speed trap on one of the major holiday routes south]

Hi guys,

Just wondered if any of you had ever seen any Black Bream whilst spearing around Portland, i've caught them on rod and line whilst boat fishing just off the Bill, probably no more than about 500yds off shore so though that they would probably come in close?

Steve

Steve, similar to you i have caught a few black bream from inshore marks whilst fishing, but have yet to see any whilst spearing. I have seen black bream falling to spearos at the bill, and i must admit that i would love to spear one. Gilt heads are high up on my list too... From what i can get out of those that know (and they can be tight lipped!) the time of day to spear gilt heads is first light, or as near as practical. They show up in very specific places at certain times, and once you have these you have cracked it, so i guess that just like everything else to do with spearing, more time in the water and the willingness to experiment with locations, tide times, conditions etc leads to the result that you are looking for. I'm not sure if black bream behave differently from gilt heads.. From the video footage i have seen they are quite shy in open water and prefer the security of caves and crevices in rocky ground. Basically they like similar ground to bass but tend to be deeper and fewer and far between, + i know for a fact that black bream like to hang out over mussel beds. Hope this helps before someone who knows what they are on about chips in!

Hi there

The Bream only come to the UK to breed early in the year...They generally find light shingle to dig out their breeding beds normally early April, then they are pretty much on there way out about now. I know of 1 bream spot at swanage and old harry rocks..not seen any at portland, although i know a few people have got a guilthead spot or two at portland (but they are tight lipped on the exact location!)
The sussex area seems to be the best for bream in general .
Hope this helps!

Well I hope your see more than I just did - the end of my spear would have been a nice start!! So don't be fooled by this calm weather - it's still all orrible & murky out there :(

"WILL" try again Sunday?? while our lucky mascot is strolling along the River Trent!!

Was down at Kimmeridge yesterday, kayaking rather than spearing -- there was a lot surf (as forecast). Unfortunately, today was not as good as forecast. There were early showers and enough wind to pick up surf at Kim. (saw half a dozen surfers heading the the point) & Ringstead. Ringstead calmed down & cleared up early afternoon, and it was gloriously sunny, but I didn't dive -- we had a sick member in the party so returned home instead :(. There is a lot of weed bits floating in the water ("weed soup").
