Got in yesterday for a pretty productive dive with Ben. Saw lots of fish about, including a small smoothhound which was nice to watch and follow along for a bit.
Saw lots of small spider crabs too, but only one takeable size male but he was involved in a bit of spider crab loving, so it didn't feel right to disturb him!
Came home with 2 big mullet (one 6lb, the other 5.5lb), 3 bass, and a brill, and Ben brought back 2 nice sole.

In the water at 10:30 and out at 3:30 am.
Max depth 3 meters.
Max vis 1m with very very heavy bloom.
Swam equivalent distance of newtons to bowleaze. My legs are buggered.

Nice one on the brill Tom! I haven't managed a sizeable one yet. U made the right choice on venue last night.
Beer to ringstead super bloom
But amongst the heavy bloom were some stonking bass up to 8 or 9lb...but due to poor vis I couldn't get a shot off. Managed these 3 bass up to 3lb 9oz snallest was just under 3lb and a jumbo mullet for old times sake.

I'm crap at fishing and crap at diving!! But a great hunter gatherer 
I figure to counteract my poor diving skills I need to use determination and staminia; .........'that I have!'
The way I see it, is that the fish move into shallower water under the cover of darkness, so hit Google maps, looked for a mamouth stretch of shallow inshore water that is protected from the wind at that given time. Then swim in stealthy hunter mode, then swim more, then swim and swim some.....law of averages would then eventually land u upon a few fish .
If you can push your body to limits and don't need sleep, then you're quids in.
My moto is: if it's 1m murk and you're 3 hours into a dive and not seen a fish....then swim for another 3 hours or until you do see fish!!!

I'm sure that you under estimate your diving skills! There is a certain technique to covering vast distance combined with stealth. The night dives work for you so keep on swimming!
Me though I need my sleep! So I'll stick to my day diving with the occasional early season night dive thrown in for good measure.

I'm wondering how the bass haven't run out yet?! Only a matter of time before a spot is cleared out, they're very territorial.

I need loads of protein! And I don't keep hitting the same spots; very rarely do it spear the same spot more than once in a month; always finding new hunting ground.
Coupled with the fact that during my dives I ignore over 50-60 bass under 3lb on some nights and just pick of the larger ones. I leave them for when u boys come and visit
, then I can sneak back to Cornwall.....

I have 3 torches that take the 18650 batteries. I use high quality Panasonic and torchy rechargeable. I get 2 hours of full brightness on each. Usually hunt 10:30-4am.

Ditto.... a very productive MAMMOTH swim and a banquet to follow lobster,brown crab and scallops for starter followed by a main course of various pan fried fillets, bass, dover sole, tub gurnard, flounder and mullet (mullet Skinned, boned and complimented with a Cajun spice) wicked
Just finished eating last nights bass, I posted the mullet to foxfish; I know it's his favourite .......
We had the other lobsters with chiabatta bread extra virgin olive oil with balsamic vinegar....and pan seared scallops with black pudding and water cress....all washed down with a bottle of shiraz compliments of the local wine merchant.
Tomorrow lunch is plaice and red signal crayfish from my local river.
Then Wednesday evening back in to feed the family gotta love this lifestyle.

I've watched a lot of Hugh's fish fight and agree with certain views on sustainability however I don't really see how spearfishing will have a significant enough of an impact to clear a specific spot void of a certain species even if it was consistently frequented by Spearo's !
I have often wondered about overfishing a spot , especially seeing so many pics of big fish from Portland Bill , but this has been going on for ages and they still keep coming up !! but when you consider what one net can take in one go it is as "sustainable" as anything can be I guess .
Whilst night fishing in a cornwall Allan and I unfortunately swam into some gill nets!!!! Not pleasant. Anyway, we are both very successful spearfishers and definitely take our share of bass.....these gill nets were absolutely brimmed with schooly bass!!! Seriously rammed!, however we were fishing around them and we managed a lot of 3-5lb bass and two donkey's. I would estimate that the nets had 700-900% more fish than the two of us and they were all juveniles. They probably net here most nights and we were still very successful.
So yeah....spearfishing alone wiping out a local population of bass? Nope.
And yes spearfishing must be, by far the most discriminating and sustainable means of fishing.
Last year I kept missing a bass if around 12-14lb at a spot nr west bay, I must have seen it 4-6 seperate I occasions. I looked on an online anglers website catch report a few days agoand read that some chap had a 12.5lb bass on rod n line from that spot ; guess I'll find out if bass are territorial now...just need the bloom to clear.
