Been a bit quiet on here for people asking genuine questions, come on locals pipe up...
Unfortunately there is a new breed of spearos on here that seem very sensitive and the 'tree hugging' type.
people have been slated for giving away spots and advice especially to newbies, same can be said for catch reports and pics....to big, to small, to many, un sporting, endangered fish etc etc....

it's a real shame as this was a very informative, friendly and fun forum all about stabbing fish and eating them.

Now, frankly people just don't want to hear the rants og others after a hard days work and a good session of stabbing fish.

obviously there still are a few great spearos on here that actually get wet...but a growing number of 'sofa spearos'.

there needs to be a completely sepetate part of the forum for politics and bitching so that we can choose not to read it. and a strict policy on removing threads and comments that are off topic (not unlike this one :)
helpful advice, safety tips, buddy networks, photos and catch reports etc... and of course friendly banter.

debated and controversial topics have their place. ..but most of us spearos just want pics, reports and help/ advice with a bit of fun :).

Hi peeps,

We are over at West Bay for a week in August and son mumber one (first season spearo) and I will be bringing the spearing gear hoping we may get wet. Not asking for any hotspots but can anyone poitn us for an enjoyable and safe dive nearby and where to avoid at all costs on safety (if there are any).

Thanks in advance
OK
west bay can be a great spot, but during the day you'll probably end up wrapped in a fishermans mono line.

if you go first light ti avoid the fishermen, then get in off the west arm of the harbour wall, off the end us around 6-8m on high tide, but if you don't fancy diving you can work the surface amongst the boulders that protect the said wall, plenty of bass and mullet in the holes.
Alternatively you can spear over the reef towards eype, walk from westbay and head west along the seafront wall as far as u can go then hunt over the reef here to avoid the crowds.
I always tell my mrs my exact location and time I'm due home.
stay safe.

Has this wind affected the vis anywhere? Looking at popping up between Weymouth and Portland.

Lee - Very much appreciate the info - I am the experienced spearo at 35 years..ish experience and am based in Cornwall but stopped posting publicly over 3 years ago due to the lack of friendliness at the time - I also kayak fish and appreciate the comments you have made - believe me you cannot get less of a tree hugger than me.

Just wanted to check if there are any no go areas due to tidal safety etc as son number 1 is in his first year.- any serious spearfishing will be done first light (although as we are off our local turf it would not be night diving) - Less serious if a day at the beach which is unlikely as 12 month old pup will be with me and he likes being in the water as much as me and the 3 kids.

Thanks again - I will also use my mark 1 eyballs at the time when we are out and about - not sure really how much time we will have during 7 days though.

On safety - I tend to have a drybag attached to my float(board) which also has my marine radio when I am on new ground .

Thanks again

It's not a bad area really, but exposed to winds all but from the north quadrant. the only thing to really worry about is the boat traffic during the day.

you will find some shelter from SW prevailing winds at lyme Regis 10 miles away.

drop me a PM and if you get time I'll meet up for some UK spearfishing without the aid of daylight ;)

Well said Lee, I don't want to hear all the politics either. I also want to go out and stab fish and eat them and hopefully big ones. Its not that easy to do and you have to really study the tactics of those who are successful to get any success yourself.
Too many people write on the forum slating others when spearo's kill a tiny tiny minority of the huge amount of fish killed by trawlers and even anglers. United we stand divided we fall, don't give ammunition to anti's.

Cheers for that, Lee, very much appreciated - noticed your thread on night spearing and enjoyed it - someone put up a recommendation for a torch so I bought one and son can have my old Underwater Kinetic torch.

Am slowly getting back to the level I used to be at - ufortunately 15 operations on my legs over the last 20 years have meant repeated halts to exercise - breath hold is slowly getting back to where it was a few years ago although in honestly I have always been more of a reef surface hunter.

Hope to get more use of my kayaks for spearing but time is tight at the moment - I usually have to choose between spearing and kayak fishing.

I will give you a shout about lack of daylight exercise ;)- do you get down to Cornwall much??

Thanks again,

All the best

Yes I hit kernow on a regular basis, great bunch of friendly like minded spearos to meet with and they always provide digs :). I was supposed to tonight....but the cider got me ;)
FB page kernow spearfishing, it's a closed group but they should add you if you request....also search on FB for group (not page uk spearfishing without the aid of daylight. I run the group with a few others; again very like minded people that aren't afraid of a bit of banter.

TBH I'm 90% surface reef/weed stalker. I find it more interesting and like to keep on the move as I get bored easily.

went in last night with a pole spear....vis was only 1-2m, but found the pole spear very useful..

nothing over 4lb...but a nice swim in only 1m of water with a torch and stab stick...caveman!

I respect you foxfish and everything you stand for. Also reading the archives on here and general searches on old man Dave. I use both as I like to show off the fish I have fought hard to catch, but I'm getting really hacked off with being slated by some who maybe should find a new hobby. So much is taken by trawlers and illegal netting, compared to us spearos. I choose the fish to take and never take under size.
Believe me I am not a lover of Facebook and only use it for diving topics and the links which benefit me in getting results, also passing on tips if I have any.
Hopefully I will get myself across for the summer meet and meet up with your good self and fellow spearos, who I admire and respect for their input and knowledge of our great sport.
Lee

I echo that Lee. I was inspired by old man dave to start my night time pursuits.....both myself and spearonobby have read through his dive reports :) :)
Marty; spearfishing is what it says on the tin. :) if you were to invite me to the islands of spearo heaven; I wouldn't say no....

I don't think opinions have changed much over the last few years, there will always be different opinions, even within a common interest.

In the past, the forum had many more regular posters and that meant that whatever your opinion, there were numerous supporters to discus or argue any point of view.

However the same criticisms have always been around the forum, if you look back five years, the threads were full of debate...

Some guys just don't like to take more than one fish a week & some like to shoot wrasse for pot bait!
It takes all sorts to make the world go around but unless you are in the middle then chances are someone wont like it!

Just a thought - would you consider allowing some invite only sub-forums?

That way you can keep all the discussions on Deeper Blue but it means that some people can have the freedom to post more freely without the annoyance of having non-like minded people butting in. It also means that people can share information, spots, catches without the world seeing, which would be a very good thing, in my opinion.

You can't be upset about people leaving DeeperBlue if you're not going to give them what they need...

( I'm very sure this will be completely ignored, just like every other suggestion I've made over the last 6 years :shifty: )

One issue (although I like the idea), would that be missed by non-regular posters like myself, or would you miss serious newbie posters for favour of the next discussion? It may disclude them
