Heyo!

A long time lurker here. Very part time fisher on the south coast and like to keep an eye on here to see what people are catching! Some of you guys are amazing, i'm so part time I never come back with more than one fish and you guys come back with belt fulls!

Anyhoo. My mind was wondering today and I remembered a short swim out around Durdle Door when I was there with some nonswimmy friends. If you swim out of Durdle Door, turn left and then swim along the bottom of the cliff has anyone found the cave tucked right underneath the cliff? It was about an eight foot diameter hole that went down and opened out into a wideish cave (with Wrass staring at me). On a second dive I noticed there was light out to the side and realised you could swim horizontally and so pop up a bit further down the cliff. This made the whole swim a lot more novel and I was just wondering if there were any other good tunnels to swim through along this coast? It was pretty small but exciting nonetheless.

Tried searching for it but can't think how to describe it!

Chris

I'm sure it was good fun but finding holes to swim through sounds like a bad, bad idea! Seriously!

I am intrigued. I never see any pictures of people spearing with the 3 or 4 prong spear tips. Is there a reason for this, do they not hold fish?
I am interested in everyone's thought or experiences. I have seen them used in the med.

People do use them especially in competitions but they are specialist tools & most definitely not suitable for most of our spearfishing methods.
Multi pronged heads will reduce the guns range by 50 - 75%, they will destroy fish flesh if the shot is placed anywhere apart from the skull, most fish under 4lb shot at close range will be cut in two or at the very least mutilated very badly.
On the plus side you could stone a holed up double figure bass or subdue a 20lb turbot with a head shot.

Couldn't find the correct section to post this in, so please feel free to move it to the appropriate place .
A bit of a controversial one regarding freshwater spearfishing...
We all know that it is not legal to spearfish freshwater and game species in the uk. So where is the nearest place to do so?

Also 'hypothetically' speaking: where I live there are lots of flooded quarry pits. A good friend of mine owns private land with a 20m deep pit with fantastic vis all year. I have freedived here many times, infact this was my training ground before I picked up a spear and entered the sea.....ok...the fact is his father had stocked this pit with rainbow trout years ago and pellet fed them. It is niw neglected but the fish are still there and BIG....so would the law still prohibit spearfishing in your own Private back yard?? Obviously I've never taken my speargun Into this lake . Just wanting your thoughts on this. Rember this is just a hypothetical question....

Lately, the few times I have tried to view the Swanage Webcam it has been offline. Emailed them this morning and they rebooted the computer. http://www.swanagelifeboat.org.uk/webcam/

Vis still not looking good.

It's like chocolate here at Southbourne. A nice morning though, the sea is flat - there are a few kayak fisherman out there.

As foxfish said they are useful on the odd occasion. About 10 years ago lightweigh trident was very popular. When i first started i used a five pronger with medi sten. Gernerally now 3/4/5 prongers are used abroad for bream fishing in holes etc with a short gun

Last year on holiday in Crete everyone I saw spearfishing were using 3 prong heads, same as in Cyprus the year before. I might try it this year to see what it is like.

Here's my little baby (45)my favourite not used the four tip though have a single with double flapper on it .think it will be the only gun I will use looking at the conditions all around not just north wales !

Just remember that if you're buying a trident head - you need a threaded spear... somehow I managed to miss that when brought one

In my defence, it did say in the listing that it fitted any spear but anyway, I felt pretty dumb!

Bought a marlin sport 50cm with a four prong tip on a threaded shaft. just trying to get fit ready for the summer now. I have now ended up with 5 guns, cressi gerinomo 90, cressi commanche 75, cressi sl70 and an sl55. I still tend to use the commanche 75 the most.

If u want to try fresh water spearfishing the closest is Poland, Ukraine (i wouldn't recommend to go there now though), Lithuana, Rusaia (same as ukraine), and Finland. These are countries where u can do it legally. Licence are cheap, accomodation is cheap (apart from finland) and u can meet some crazy lads hunting for catfish up to 100+lb!!!

Reactions: speerolee
If u are buying multiprongs i can recomend imersion trident matc. Easy to take the fish off it and it is durable. The only cons is unreasonbly high price!!!! I bought it this winter and tried few times. Works beautifully!

Not tried. Vis still looking poor at Swanage: http://www.swanagelifeboat.org.uk/webcam/

I may try Southbourne on Monday - not expecting to see anything - it will be for training purposes. There has been a lot of sand movement down here over the winter. Some of the rocky outcrops I discovered may be buried.

Interested to find out if there are any rocky outcrops exposed, as the sand has been stripped away on some Cornish coasts leaving nice fishy rocky features.
