Hi JJT Bognor is thick with plankton bloom, no more than 1m viz. However, the fish are arriving with a few bream, bass and pollock being caught.
If we could tell you the answer to that things would be a lot easier! Its a combination of wind, tide, time of year / bloom, bit of luck and wise words of the old medicine man.
If you keep hitting the same few spots you'll be able to learn what tends to signal better vis, this will really help but there are no guarantees and it tends to vary wherever you go. A bit of local knowledge and keeping an eye on the weather in the week leading up to a dive are your best bet.
The best vis I have experienced is probably in winter, but then it is not so fishy and it will be cold - still fun though.
Sorry I can't give you a simpler answer, but I can assure you you will have great fun, meet a some great people along the way, and get some great fresh seafood. Some other more experienced folks on here will probably provide some further good pointers. Aside from going diving with someone experienced this site is one of the best places to learn.

Where abouts did you get in 21raven21? making the trip down this morning from Bristol for first dive of the season. Can anyone give me a heads up for a possible dive site to get wet? Was thinking durdle door or worbarrow to take a dip with that mako! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
I keep hearing that Durdle has poor vis. Warbarrow sounds like the better of the two & is less exposed as you have some easterlies, so will be protected a lot better.

Has anyone tried Hook Sands just outside Poole Harbour for bass? I have caught a lot of bass there by rod and line and wondered if it is a good spot for spearing? Or the training bank at Studland? Any advice on finding spots around Poole/Old Harry/Swanage would be much appreciated. I can access via boat so don't need to be shore based locations. Thanks in advance for any ideas/tips.
Hook sands would need the boat. I have caught plaice from the kayak over there. It can be very shallow at low water and there can be strong currents in the surrounding area as it is close to the mouth of Poole Harbour. Watch out for the wash from other boats. I doubt the vis would ever be that great - too much water movement stirring up the sand. I would be interested to hear how you get on if you decide to give it ago.
Thanks. Often when I have been fishing on the Boston the viz has been crystal clear so I'm hopeful. It is shallow but where the sand banks drop away to deeper water is where I catch a lot of bass spinning. Best conditions for spinning is a spring tide where high tide is the last two/three hours before sunset on a sunny clear evening from mid April to September. Don't get many of those but when we do it's mental so I'm hopeful spearing will be the same. If you fancy joining me let me know.
did try out winspit again yesterday and the no vis at all managed to get a spidercrab but let him go back to the safety of the sea. Got a trip down to Cornwall planned for next month so hopefully it all improves by then
