As a guy relatively new to the sport, i there any spearfishig "hotspots" you'd recommend checking out around the dorset coastline?

James

You won't get any hotspots broadcast on a public forum I'm afraid! However the search function is useful to review the archives on dorset. Most of the time you'll be governed by wind, wave and swell, so look for areas sheltered by headlands and tall cliffs. Obviously sheltered areas and those of rocky makeup will have better viz than a sandy beach. Portland harbour seems a pretty gentle learning slope for a newcomer. All normal safety disclaimers apply of course.

Thought I should post again as nobody else is right now. Quick 2 hr evening dip on a cliff mark. Slight swell but calm with a perfect 3-4m viz. Fish every where, nothing of great size but plenty to go at. Few bass as well, but spooky as ever. Came home with mullet, bass and pollock. Real great spot and straight into good ground and not a long hike and or swim!

Anybody able to report on current viz for swanage to portland please. Looking at Sunday probably. I'm holding hope by the way that the dorset thread isn't completely dead and that somebody may answer me!

NEWS FLASH: Dorset thread is officially dead, only 4 pages of posts, and it's September next week!

I think the whole forum is in decline. Such a shame as it used to be an amazing, vibrant community.

I think the 'Like" button is partly to blame - it's taken people out of the mind set of actually replying to posts, they can just hit "Like" and move on. Who wants to take the time to actually bother to write up a dive report and upload pictures when no-one even replies?

There has also been bad user management - mods allowed the top posters who actually wrote up reports and posted pictures to be hounded off the forum by trolls. One person in particular made DeeperBlue a dirty word amongst a lot of spearos, especially anyone to do with BSA.

The last two summers can't have helped as the spearing hasn't been good - I'd guess there are probably less people going out diving - I might be wrong.

I'd also say that most people on this forum nowadays aren't interested in community - they just want viz reports or want to know where to find fish. I haven't posted in ages but bothered to write a short report on Friday as two people were asking for viz reports on the North Wales thread - not a single reply or thanks - totally as expected. Don't think I'll bother to post again.

Perhaps folk got fed up with the aggro.

I got out of the habit of visiting Dorset regularly when the Olympic sailing blocked up all the roads. And I tend not to post as much when I do visit now, as things haven't changed much. Just more, big jelly fish! Hope to go down again soon but the weather has been all over the place recently and I prefer a few days of calm before a visit to avoid a wasted trip.

Should I hit like?

Well then Bro, what could be the answer, other than a damn good kick in the guts? Just a couple of years ago the Dorset thread was alive, full of banter and reports, and a little further back you had the wessex club, which was a community in its own right.

I'm newish to the sport, and would feel at a disadvantage without having the dorset archives to peruse. For that reason I post about every trip I have and feel a duty to do so. I never give away place names, just a general idea on the type of ground I have visited.

Perhaps it's better that nothing much is going on a public forum.

I know that feeling well but I try to ignore it because sometimes those days work out ok in the end - although sometimes they don't! I believe it's called pessimism

Yes, for sure it is a lot more interesting when there are a lot of fish around, even if they are small wrasse & small pollock. Even more interesting when the fish are a bit bigger and/or there are sandeels around - a food source for several fishes.

Been following the forum for about 18 months since taking up the sport. Didn't post as I didn't feel I had much expertise to share yet. But I've certainly found it useful as a newbie.
I'd be happy to start posting viz +\- fish reports after my trips. Maybe we can resuscitate the forum before it's too late.

Why not? Even just basic viz reports regarding tide and weather state would be fab, give us that live an hour or so away a heads up. Atb

That's the spirit chaps in fact the overall forum has more hits per day than ever but the actuall postings have gone down!
However we are not going anywhere so just keep posting and keep things ticking over as your post are being read.
Lots of things go in cycles and we might see a turn around from Facebook back to forums in the future.

The problem was that every time someone posted something a minority slated them be it for night spearfishing, size of fish, quantity of fish or anything they could. The mods then asked them not to post about these things and the majority of the community did not like that so left and set up Facebook groups like Dorset spearfishing and spearfishing without the aid of daylight. These pages are very active and the fact that this thread has just four pages is a reflection of the fact that the mods did not support those members of Deeper Blue.

Jpp, I hear you for sure, but not everyone wants to be part of Facebook, and I like the fact that there is some anonymity with this style of forum.

Anyway, finished work, so just packing my stuff as I am actually off spearfishing! . Hopefully the rain has put off a lot of the bank holiday traffic.

Sadly we can't please everyone - we took a view that night fishing was not allowed and that annoyed a small group on here. They have now gone off to Facebook - they do not represent everyone. We look after a community that spans 200,000 individuals users every month (on the whole site) from across the globe and we can't make decisions that will keep everyone happy. I wish we could but after 16 years of the forums i've learnt we can't.

Sadly the night posters were also quite militant/trollish in their opinions which also lost us a load of members from Dorset.
