Jpp, yes you are right but there were also complains from every angle as well.
Please understand that we don't want to loose any members but it is very hard to please everybody.
At the end of the day Stephan owns the forum however, I will put forward any suggestion you have to make the forum a better place.
To help me understand what were the complaints Foxfish?

Well I don't want to quote anyone in particular as a lots of complaints came via pms however, many people though the continuous stream of large catch's were giving a bad overall impression toward spearfishing.
We lost many members who have not returned to the forum, not only from the Dorset thread but several regular posters who helped the forum by being active over the whole board.
I & other staff members tried to control the situation for many on going months, it was a sad time for me as a lot of key people on the forum simply stopped posting.
Considering this forum has featured night diving as a popular and successful method without any real issues for over a decade it really comes down to few certain people who felt the need to relentlessly upset the cart when it was obvious to all what they were doing was deliberately winding people up.
The issues were not really about night diving but about attitudes.
So in the end we lost the guys who were catching lots of fish (bad for the forum) the guys who did not agree with large catches being shown on these pages (bad for the forum) the guys who felt they were insulted on these pages, the guys who hated seeing all the arguments on these pages, a few who did not agree with nigh diving etc, etc.... all bad for the forum.
At the end of the day a few people upset a lot of people & I don't see any winners.

So the few who were catching a lot of fish upset people because they caught a lot of fish?
So night fishing was banned on the forum but it still continues?
Where do we stand?

JPP i dont really know what else to say.

The average member does not want to be involved with argumentative discussions.
The Dorset thread was besieged with them last year.

We are not the police just ordinary guys who like to go diving and have full time jobs.

At the time, it seemed the only way to stop all the animosity without baning actuall members was to ban the night diving.
I wish as much as anyone we could see the thread return to it's previous glory "without all the arguments"

I am not sure what you are fighting for... Do you want Pauls post removed? Would you like night diving reinstated?

Again, probably shouldn't voice my opinion being so new to the forum, but it's obvious common sense to me. Night diving is a fundamental part of the sport and it's perfectly legal. If catch limits or no other laws are being broken then it defies logic for it to be against the rules to discuss it. I as a newbie would benefit greatly from that information.

Any forum member that deliberately disrupts threads simply because they don't agree with other people's opinions, and is incapable of expressing their differences maturely and politely, needs to be banned from the forum, simple as that. Banning certain (perfectly legal) topics to appease trolls is a very strange way of dealing with the problem IMO.

I've just seen the BBC weather forecast for Dorset coast - it looks like we all have to stay away from spearfishing this week.
Those gales will stir sea bottom pretty well. That's a pity because September and October used to be the best months for getting big and fat fish.

Due to family commitments and working lots of nights, the odd night dive is all I seem to be able to manage nowadays. I have spent many a day travelling the far reaches of the South hams enjoying diving and coming home late evening. Sometimes with fish sometimes without but it became apparent that there wasn't the luxury of time for me to continue diving in the daytime unless staying close to home, which if anyone knows teignmouth is not known for its viz!!
Night diving Is just the same as daytime dives, meaning you need to learn technics and how to hunt fish. How many newbies - no offence but how many post 9-10lb bass?? Not a lot.
I always dive alone at night which throws up many challenges but excites me and I enjoy the peace at night.

We are all adults here! Why can't an olive branch be put out and let bygones be bygones. Guys might or might not come back to this forum but life's to short, people that spear fish in general want to see fish. I like seeing all catches but without those guys posting, whom I've never met there isn't much to log on for. As others have stated look at the page number compared to a couple of years ago.

Stephen might own this site and hats off for building such a site, but come on let's see fish reports back onto this forum. Guys have set up sites on facebook so may well stay clear but I'm sure there'd be happy to post their best fish of the night without upsetting people, many i question ever get wet or ever catch!

So here I am having spent an hour typing this, can I really be bothered anymore? If people are just going to criticise.

There is a lot of crap happening in the world and in my life, so let's just see people happily posting their catch.

Rant over.

I quite agree Scrumpy. I also spearfish alone at night and enjoy the solitude and would like to see the posts back.

Thanks foxfish.

I love deeper blue and I am not a facebook fan (really) but I do like seeing fish and posting without all the horrible banter. I've enjoyed reading your old posts and others, which has got me through the bleak winters, whilst learning the art.

I like the photo and would not ban it. My point is about Paul catching them at night not the amount as I am believe he caught three in one day and three in the next.
...
Also depends how they define "day" - if the definition is "any period of 24 consecutive hours" that might be a problem, were there not two fishermen involved, as reported here.

Mr X, the way I read the new legislation is that it relates to per day, so paul, in my interpretation, is perfectly above the law. That's certainly how I will play it, each day defined as 00:00 until 23:59.

I happily night dive (aka shooting fish in the headlights) as its a perfectly legal and HIGHLY successful activity PARTICULARLY if you have the time patterns or just the dogged inclination to go very regularly. Nothing to do with guts, holding your balls or distances.
But, I also cant be bothered to see all the bollocks that's invaded the forum over the recent years and seems a spin off of the social media narcissism plague. Such a shame compared to the Portland Oceaneering type days and the good natured meetups of the past.
I also believe its not the night diving, it's the attitude. Try a sin bin system?

Guys let me be clear. I am allergic to trolls not night diving. The reason night diving discussions got shut down is because certain members never formally stepped outside the forum rules or legality of diving but used night diving as a means of trolling other members and staff. The reaction by most members was to leave and not come back.

I am in discussion with foxfish and other staff on how best to lay this out clearly but let me be clear it is troll activities that caused this issue not night diving.

I had no idea that night diving reports were banned as such , I thought the main protaganists started their own facebook thing after coming under flack . With the new regs ( 3 fish ) such catches should not upset too many , although the 6 fish if spanning 2 days could be seen as exploiting a loophole ( which IFCA could close ) and regular postings of 6 fish could easily stir things up again !! What is the legal definition of catch / land ? as someone seen with 6 fish coming ashore early in the morning could claim to have caught them spanning 2 days but could this be proven to a fisheries officer ? Also it seemed almost always bass were caught which are understood to be suffering from over fishing hence the introduction of the new bag limits as part of efforts to preserve stocks . Often the night posts seemed to promote an attitude of taking as many and as big a fish as possible leading to some to think it was boasting and displaying greed , but every one has different ways of enjoying spearfishing , some for recreation others to fill the freezer , and seeing as we are pretty few and far between I am sure individuals could put their differences aside and enjoy common ground ( not secret spots though !!) ... Terry..
